Chapter 166: Li San’s Rage
Chapter 166
The reaction at the seat of the leaders was far more extreme than the ones the audience were showing as they looked at Liyu, with creases forming on their brows.
Even Li San, who was usually as calm as ever, had a crease on his brow as he looked at the scene before him with a frown: "What is the meaning of this..." This can’t be.
He shook his head as if throwing away the thought that had suddenly sprang into his mind, unwilling to face the consequences if it turned out to be true. He shook his head again: "No... that can’t be true." He refused to accept it.
Elder Ting’s eyes narrowed slightly as well as he tried to understand what was going on with the kid below. He can’t possibly be that, right? He is a human. Even his aura is that of a human.
But now... no matter how much he tried to convince himself that this was not possible, that the kid couldn’t possibly be a beastman, the fact that his aura had now turned into a primal, bestial aura that was suffocating the very air itself with its force made Elder Ting start to doubt his own assumptions.
All the leaders sat there, their own assumptions shaken as they tried to keep their cool and contemplate what was happening on the stage below. While they contemplated, however, one leader couldn’t keep calm like the rest.
Shi Gubing shot to his feet, his face dark. With trembling hands, he pointed at Liyu, his entire body shaking as if he were prey that had been hiding and was now discovered by a very vicious predator. His entire body shook greatly: "What the hell is a beastman doing here?"
He said it out of pure shock, but there was something else mixed into his voice beyond that. In his mind, a pair of red slit eyes flashed through his memories.
His body shivered once more. And before anyone could prepare or even properly understand what was happening, Shi Gubing moved forward.
His advance was fast. Super fast. He cut through the sky as a long black sword, oozing with a powerful aura, appeared in his hand. He had removed it from the storage ring he was wearing, and with it, he easily pierced through the bronze barrier that the referee had raised.
Since the barrier was meant to keep the aftershock of Liyu and Guan Haoran’s battle in check, for someone as powerful as Shi Gubing, slicing through it required minimal effort.
With a single movement, he cut through it, and within the blink of an eye, he had crossed the distance between himself and Liyu. His sword was raised high. He attacked.
Shink!
Liyu sensed the danger fast, and he tried to react. A thin line cut across his neck, appearing so fast that he wasn’t able to react at all. His mind went blank as his head rolled right off his neck, hitting the ground with a thud.
That was when Liyu opened his eyes. He gasped for breath and touched his neck. It was still there. He was not dead yet. He heaved a sigh of relief and then sensed that the danger was still near.
"What are you doing?" A cold voice sounded right behind Liyu. And when Liyu turned, he could see that he really would have died if not for the referee.
The referee stood between Liyu and Shi Gubing, his hands covered in a layer of dense Qi as he held Shi Gubing’s sword in the middle of its slash. The referee’s gaze was cold and slightly impassive as he spoke.
His tone sounded cold and on edge: "What is the meaning of this, Clan Lord Shi?"
Shi Gubing’s face was still that of pure panic and terror as he looked at Liyu, who was being protected by the ref.
Liyu blinked, not understanding what was happening. He had just finished shifting when he sensed that he was dead, but not dead. Instead, what he had sensed earlier surely must have been the killing illusion his mind cast due to how close he really had been to dying for real.
Wait... I would have died for real? Liyu’s gaze became that of a feral beast that had been annoyed and troubled, as his yellow slit eyes seemed to grow even narrower.
The fear and panic in Shi Gubing’s heart seemed to double over as he managed to twist his sword away from the ref and strike him with a swinging kick enhanced with Earth Qi.
The force of the attack, although blocked by the ref, was still more than enough to send him sliding across the ground. With the small moment Shi Gubing had left, he attacked Liyu once more. His sword moved fast. Far too fast for Liyu to react to.
Heck, the only reason he was even able to sense something was because of how ridiculous his senses had become in this state. But alas, that wouldn’t be enough to help him survive. Without anyone telling him, he knew he was in danger.
But his mind, unlike before, didn’t panic. The reason for that was because he certainly wouldn’t be dying here today. Not when a particular someone was watching...
The attack came in the next microsecond, maybe even far faster than that. Liyu couldn’t tell. What he knew was that danger was imminent. The grip of danger around his neck was even slightly suffocating.
But alas, just as he believed and hoped, that danger vanished the next second as another figure appeared right between the two, holding Shi Gubing’s sword between his fingers.
Without wasting a second, the figure moved and twisted his finger. The sword between his fingers shattered. And he moved.
Before Shi Gubing could understand who had stopped his attack and why, he suddenly felt a deep pain spreading through his nerves. He coughed out a mouthful of blood as he keeled over: "What the hell?" he yelped in pain.
But he didn’t even get to cry out properly when he felt a strong grip catch him by the neck and raise him to eye level with the one who had stopped his assault and attacked him instead.
Seeing the furious gaze of Li San, Shi Gubing couldn’t help but suddenly feel like he was in even bigger danger now.
Especially because of the way the guy was looking at him. It was not his usual calm self. It wasn’t even the angry expression he wore when he was pissed. No.
The expression he wore on his face this time was something much more scarier. It was something Shi Gubing had only ever seen once on Li San’s face.
And let’s just say that the day he saw that expression... he nearly died. In fact, he would have been long dead alongside Guan Ju if someone had not intervened to calm Li San down.
When Li San was thoroughly pissed off and angry to a certain extent that crossed the limit, his gaze would become dark and expressionless, almost as if he had no feelings. And that was when... whosoever had pissed him off should know that they were in more than big trouble.
"Clan Lord Shi, you have crossed the line now. Really crossed the line." Before Shi Gubing could say anything, he was met with a fist to the face.
A loud bam, then bang, echoed as Shi Gubing was sent flying through the air. He managed to regain his grip and landed on his two feet. His face was already starting to sweat as he realized that there was no running away.
Li San was really pissed off now. And he seemed more than ready to kill him. Shi Gubing could tell because he could feel the killing intent directed at him. It was cold. Calm. And devastating. The fear he had before switched targets as he started to sweat even more.
Li San turned his gaze sideways to look at his bratty cousin, and after seeing that the latter was fine, he sighed in relief inwardly. Then he turned his dark, expressionless gaze back to Shi Gubing, who was not so far away.
A dense wave of energy swirled around his hand. Then he vanished. The space between him and Shi Gubing seemed to shift and distort as he appeared right in front of him in what seemed to be less than an instant. Shi Gubing’s hair stood on end.
His face widened in panic as he felt death fast approaching, and there was nothing he could do to stop it. The punch moved fast. Far too fast for Shi Gubing to dodge. Nothing on him could save him from this. Nothing. He was in danger...
As the fist approached faster and faster, something suddenly changed: "Enough." A calm, commanding voice spoke, and the very air around Shi Gubing and Li San changed totally.
The power within the two of them seemed to vanish, and neither of them was able to move a single inch. They seemed to have turned into statues.
There was only one person here at this moment who was capable of nullifying and suppressing Li San with nothing more than his own presence and aura alone. And that individual was none other than Elder Ting.
The Rising Wave Sect elder slowly landed and looked at Li San, who looked at him with something close to irritation. Elder Ting was slightly taken aback. He could feel that Li San was trying to break free, and the fact that he was even managing was already surprising enough.
But the fact that Elder Ting believed he really might if he tried harder was even more surprising. Perhaps he really shouldn’t be that surprised. Even if Li San was far less talented than his sister, Lady Shiyuen, he himself was far from being ordinary. He was strong and talented as well.
Elder Ting looked at Li San and realized the grip around his face first, allowing him to speak: "What are you doing, Clan Lord Li? We are in the midst of an important occasion, with thousands of eyes watching."
He didn’t finish his words, but his meaning was clear for anyone to understand.
Li San looked from Shi Gubing to Elder Ting, his anger almost palpable as he spoke: "That bastard nearly killed my cousin. He tried to kill him twice."
His gaze turned toward Elder Ting, sharp and furious. It was the kind of gaze that would threaten the most seasoned warrior and make the predator feel like prey: "And you said I’m being unreasonable?" he asked, his tone cold and murderous.
He strained, trying to break free even more.
Li San had tolerated many things from the Shi and Guan Clan Lords as he tried to maintain the peace among the three clans for the prosperity of the Night Region as a whole.
He had been calm. Really calm. And he really didn’t take offense in most cases. But what he couldn’t remain calm about... what he couldn’t ignore... was them targeting someone he cared about.
If not for the ref intercepting that first attack while he was in deep contemplation about what was happening, then he wouldn’t have been fast enough to save his cousin.
If his cousin died right before his eyes... what would he tell his dead sister, whom he had promised to protect her son no matter what? What would he tell his friend, whom he promised that he was going to nurture and bring Liyu up? What would he do then? He didn’t know.
But the very thought of the fact that Liyu was almost killed right under his watch made his anger bubble over and his killing intent surge.
Feeling that Li San might really break free, Elder Ting had to stop suppressing him passively and make it active. Once he did that, Li San was unable to move any muscle anymore.
He was totally and utterly suppressed. Since without a shred of doubt... the gap between the Golden Core Realm and the Silver Core Realm is far from been small.
The gap between the two was really vast to begin with, after all.
Elder Ting turned his gaze to Shi Gubing, releasing the pressure around his head and allowing him to speak as he questioned him: "And you, Clan Lord Shi? Why act so rashly?"
Shi Gubing first took in a deep, steady breath of relief that he had survived before he turned and looked at Elder Ting. After seeing that he was safe, his confidence came back, and he spoke, his tone serious and steady:
"You all know what I did is the only thing to do." He turned his gaze to Liyu, who was looking at everything with a confused expression, and continued:
"That kid is a beastman. And the Law of Lykana makes it more than clear that all beastmen within the continent must be killed on sight."
