Chapter 138: Adapting....
Chapter 138
Liyu felt another wave of pain slam through his body as he was struck by yet another brutal attack from Shi Mo, a powerful kick hitting him and sending him crashing deep into the battle stage once again.
A loud rumbling sound spread outward as a reverberating BANG! echoed in every direction, and a massive crater, nearly two metres deep, formed on the stage... while Liyu’s body was the one that had created it.
The crowd was stunned into complete silence as they looked at the scene unfolding before them, finding it difficult for them to imagine that this was the same Liyu who had completely crushed Shi Lan whenever he felt like it... breaking his bones and ribs with a small, sadistic smile on his face as though he was merely playing with a friend rather than brutally torturing the hell out of his opponent.
They found it even more difficult to believe that this was the same Liyu who had casually dodged, evaded, and countered the full-powered attacks of two powerful cultivators from the Guan Clan with nothing but simple movements... all while reading a comic book.
One hand remained inside his pocket... while the other held the book, yet not a single attack had managed to touch him, and his skin hadn’t even been scratched or grazed.
And when he was finally done reading the book... what did he do? He sent the two Guan brothers straight into the jaws of defeat with nothing but a series of insulting slaps. It was crazy... utterly crazy.
And yet... that same Liyu, whom many people in the crowd had gradually grown wary of... the same person whom many had started believing was probably a monster wearing the skin of the Li Clan heir... was now being brutally beaten across the entire battle stage.
But one thing had always been clear. Monster or not... Liyu was insanely strong and powerful, having even looked invincible.
The fact that he had taken Shi Mo’s powerful strike head-on with nothing but a smile... and had even gone as far as saying that the attack gave him a nice massage... was enough to make many people in the crowd feel like fainting from sheer disbelief.
So, after everything the crowd had seen so far, many had already written this battle off as another victory for Liyu. They believed he would defeat Shi Mo... then move on to challenge the next few opponents standing in his way.
That had been the belief of almost everyone watching. And then... this happened.
All gazes became fixed upon the battle taking place below as frowns slowly appeared on their faces. Liyu was being thrown from left to right... receiving one brutal beating after another.
He looked like a weak mortal who had challenged a fully trained knight... and was now paying the price for his stupidity and ignorance.
"Is he really going to lose like this?" Someone from the crowd spoke, his voice filled with shock as though he were witnessing another terrible nightmare. And yes... he had every reason to be anxious.
After all, he had bet on Liyu during this round. During the first round, he had bet against Liyu... and lost. During the second round, he had once again bet against Liyu... and lost again.
And now that he had finally decided to bet on Liyu... Liyu was losing. Was his luck truly this vile and cursed?
"You can’t lose like this!" "Stand up and win!" The man shouted like a madman. If he lost his money during this round as well... he might genuinely become a madman.
But he wasn’t the only person anxious about Liyu losing the match. The rest of the people who had placed their money on Liyu were equally worried.
And now... Liyu appeared to have no hope of winning anymore. Heck... he didn’t even seem capable of lifting a single finger.
"You can’t lose like this!" "You must stand up!" "Come on!"
"Why aren’t you moving?!" "Why are you just standing there and allowing yourself to be beaten like this?!" "This isn’t fair!" "Stand up now!"
A person standing beside the man who had been shouting suddenly frowned. "Stop shouting and acting as though you would have done any better if you were in his shoes..." He was a lone cultivator at the very peak of the Qi Refining Realm.
He was highly respected and extremely popular throughout the Night Region due to his powerful cultivation and the strong, sturdy reputation he had built over the years.
The mundane audience member standing beside him looked at him with annoyance before asking, "What do you mean by, if I were in his shoes?" "He is just standing there and getting thrashed!"
"What is wrong with him?" "Can’t he just stand up and beat that guy’s ass?"
The man didn’t speak for a while. The crease between his eyebrows, however, said everything. When he finally spoke, his tone sounded somewhat subdued. "You can’t sense the flow of energy..."
"That is why you are unable to understand just how much of a freak that kid is for not having already been crushed."
He turned his gaze toward Liyu, the frown on his face deepening into a heavy scowl. Then, he raised his hand and pointed toward the battle stage. "Do you see that stage?" "The pressure surrounding that place is suffocating..."
"Extremely suffocating." "If a mundane person like yourself were thrown onto that stage right now, you would die instantly." "Your bones wouldn’t be spared either." "They would be completely crushed into the finest powder imaginable due to how overwhelming the pressure is."
The moment he said that, a loud gulp came from the man who had been complaining. His face immediately turned pale.
The cultivator continued, his tone becoming even more wary. "Even I, someone standing at the very pinnacle of the Qi Refining Realm, am not certain that I could remain standing inside that field for long without my bones breaking."
He gulped as though the very thought terrified him. "The fact that that kid is even managing to stand..." "...is the peak of madness." He said as he looked toward Liyu, who had slowly and painfully climbed out of the crater.
Every movement appeared difficult. It looked as though moving even a single part of his body required the same amount of effort as lifting an entire mountain, and in some sense... that was probably the truth.
Yet... Liyu was still standing. He was accomplishing something that left the man speechless. Not only him... but many other cultivators throughout the arena who were capable of sensing the flow of Qi and therefore understood, to the deepest level, just how much of a freak Liyu truly was.
The fact that he remained standing beneath such overwhelming gravity was simply absurd.
Many cultivators who were far stronger than Liyu would already be struggling to breathe under that terrifying pressure, and they would have been crushed flat against the ground... their bodies unable to move... their fingers incapable of even twitching. And yet... Liyu, a cultivator at only the first stage of the Qi Gathering Realm, was still capable of standing.
"He is a freak..." The man finally spoke. His voice was low... almost haunted.
Meanwhile... Liyu slowly stood up from the crater. Deep and terrifying pain ravaged his body from every direction. But unlike what everyone else believed... the attacks Shi Mo had landed weren’t the ones causing him this much pain.
Not even close. Shi Mo was strong. Perhaps even extremely strong. But Liyu’s body was simply far too tough. To put it simply... Liyu doubted that most cultivators below the Foundation Realm could even leave a scratch on his body.
Of course... Shi Mo was among the few who had managed to leave a scratch. No... several scratches, even.
But regardless of how strong Shi Mo was... regardless of how much force his punches carried... his attacks still weren’t powerful enough to cause Liyu this much pain.
Meaning... Shi Mo wasn’t the reason Liyu felt pain ravaging his entire body.
Instead... Liyu’s eyes shifted toward the system notification floating before him. It read:
Warning! Host! Your Primal Tyrant Physique has triggered a forced adaptation in response to the sudden surge in gravitational pressure.
Primal Adaptation Initiated...
Adaptation Progress: 7%
Estimated Time Until Adaptation Is Complete: 29 Minutes.
And... this was the true culprit. His physique was the culprit. Or, more accurately... the massive increase in gravity was the cause of everything.
The sudden surge in gravitational pressure had triggered his physique and forced it to begin adapting.
Liyu wasn’t truly surprised though. This wasn’t the first time it had happened. It had already happened when Shi Mo first used his Gravity Qi against him and forced him onto his knees. At that time, his Primal Tyrant Physique had also triggered an adaptation.
However... it had taken only about a minute or so to complete. But now... the increase in pressure was simply too vast. The time required for the adaptation had increased dramatically as well.
And the pain Liyu was currently experiencing... well... he knew that pain far too well to forget it. It was the exact same pain he had experienced during his Body Refinement process. So, in a simple and straightforward way... his body was currently being tempered and refined beneath the increased gravity.
Shi Mo didn’t know it yet... but Liyu was probably the worst person he could have possibly used his Gravity Qi against. He wouldn’t be able to handle the result. After all... without realising it, Shi Mo was making Liyu even stronger.
By the time the refinement was complete... Shi Mo would finally understand... he would finally realise just how badly he had fucked up. Liyu would have grown even stronger. But until then... he needed to endure the pain of the refinement.
Whoosh! A sharp sound suddenly echoed through the air.
Liyu sighed. "Here we go again..." He thought. Then... another brutal force slammed into the side of his skull. He was knocked off his feet once again.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Shi Mo showed absolutely no mercy. He repeatedly thrashed Liyu... striking his head... his chest... his arms... his body... anywhere and everywhere. If anyone didn’t know better... they would have thought Liyu owed Shi Mo’s entire ancestry an unimaginable amount of money.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
BOOOOOOOOM!
Liyu crashed into the battle stage for the ninth time during the same match. His body created another massive crater as blood slowly dripped from the corner of his mouth. Still... his eyes never left the blue screen hovering directly above his face.
It displayed:
Adapting... 25%...
The reason why Liyu wasn’t that worried about getting thrashed... although he did mind it, he wasn’t going to complain against it.
After all... the constant beating was making the adaptation progress even faster. If there was one thing that stood out in the description of his Primal Tyrant Physique, then it was the fact that it only grew beneath strain and stress.
It didn’t grow through comfort. It grew through pain... constant pressure... and continuous danger. So, in short... not only did Liyu need the refinement he was currently undergoing to become stronger... he needed the beating as well. The more Shi Mo attacked him... the faster his body would adapt.
Liyu grinned as he slowly stood up and wiped away the blood dripping from the corner of his mouth.
The blood, as much as it appeared to have been caused by Shi Mo’s attacks, was actually caused more by the refinement his body was currently undergoing. He didn’t show it... but his body was trapped in a state of constant agony. After all... that was how the refinement process worked.
Liyu raised his head and looked toward Shi Mo. Then... he smiled at him. "I am really going to beat the shit out of him when all of this is done." Liyu thought as he grinned at Shi Mo.
Shi Mo’s brows had creased deeply as he looked toward Liyu with a wary expression. "How can he still be standing?" Shi Mo thought. Then, he shook his head.
It didn’t matter how much he thought about it. If he continued overthinking everything, he would only make himself unnecessarily afraid... and that would reduce his chances of securing victory. He couldn’t allow that to happen. Liyu was already within his grasp.
Just a few more brutal attacks... and he would finally be finished. No matter how inhuman his body was... there had to be a limit. He surely had a limit. "I just need to keep thrashing him until he finally reaches that limit and collapses on his own."
With that thought, Shi Mo pushed himself and continued his relentless offensive.
Every attack delivered more and more damage. Every strike became heavier. Every blow carried even greater force. He tried harder and harder to inflict as much damage upon Liyu as possible.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Adapting... 35%...
BOOM! Liyu was smashed directly into a crater he had created earlier, the crater deepened beneath the sheer force of the impact.
BOOOOOOM! A small puddle of blood was coughed from Liyu’s mouth. He slowly licked the blood away... then grinned madly. "I am really going to break him..." He said, his tone dark and amused.
Shi Mo’s gaze twitched when he saw Liyu slowly standing up from the crater once again. He was more than certain that he wasn’t seeing things. Meaning... what he was witnessing was real.
The twenty-fivefold increase in gravity was still active... yet Liyu’s movements had become faster. It was almost as though... he was adapting.
Shi Mo’s heart thumped loudly as a terrible premonition appeared within his mind. This Liyu is even more dangerous than I initially believed. He needed to end him before everything spiralled completely out of control.
With that thought, Shi Mo decided to focus only on using combat arts capable of delivering the most brutal impacts possible. They were the strongest... the most destructive... and the most brutal combat arts he possessed.
And now... they were the techniques he would use to dismantle and crush every single bone inside Liyu’s body.
Liyu slowly raised a hand and waved at him.
Although his movements were still somewhat slow... the fact that he was even capable of waving at all confirmed Shi Mo’s fears. Liyu is indeed adapting... and that wasn’t good news. Not good news at all.
Shi Mo’s eyes narrowed. Then... he attacked once again.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Liyu was thrashed once more... as brutally as possible.
Everyone inside the Ray Arena could only watch as the battle continued, all eager to see how this completely unexpected match would end. At the moment... it appeared that Liyu would lose.
But the fact that he was still standing despite every beating and brutal attack he had received kept the hope alive for those supporting him. Perhaps... there was still a chance that he would win this battle.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Adapting... 65%...
BOOM!
Shi Mo was beginning to breathe heavily as he looked toward Liyu. Deep inside... he prayed that Liyu wouldn’t stand back up again. But... he was completely wrong.
Because the very next moment... Liyu stood up. Then... he looked toward Shi Mo and gave him a small wink.
The sight made Shi Mo question his own reality as dread slowly began filling his chest. He was starting to experience the same feeling Guan Jian... Guan Feng... and Shi Lan... had experienced when they faced Liyu. Fear... "How is he still standing after all of that?" Shi Mo asked in complete shock.
The shock slowly transformed into fear. "Should I surrender?" "I don’t think I can win this..." "He seems completely unbreakable..."
Then... the fear changed into shame. "How can I even think something like that?" No... he couldn’t surrender. Then the shame transformed into anger.
"I will crush him..." "No matter what it takes!" Shi Mo said before charging forward once again.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

Bang... Bang... Bang...

Several more minutes passed. When the dust finally settled... when the smoke and shattered fragments of the stage slowly cleared... everyone saw a terrified Shi Mo looking toward Liyu as though he were staring directly at a devil.
"How can you still be standing after all of that...?" "How?"
Across from him... Liyu’s head was facing the ground. Yet... he was still standing firmly on his feet. Droplets of crimson blood fell from his head and mouth from time to time.
"What the hell are you?! " Shi Mo shouted in shock before striking forward with a powerful Gravi-Punch!
The punch travelled forward at terrifying speed. But... it didn’t hit Liyu. Instead... Liyu halted the attack. He caught Shi Mo’s fist with one of his hands. Liyu slowly raised his head and looked toward the terrified Shi Mo, and a small grin appeared on his face.
"I am Liyu..."
Then... his grin widened.
"Also..."
"You have had your fun."
"Now..."
"It is my turn."
He said as madness gleamed within his eyes. The blue screen floating before him changed.
