Chapter 129: The Wise Earn Fortune.. While the Fools
Chapter 129
Liyu looked around at his opponents, or rather, to him, he was looking for the one that would be his next victim. From the aura that was radiating subtly from them, he could tell just what level of power they possessed and gauge their overall combat strength.
His gaze moved to Guan Haoran, who was looking at him with a gaze full of interest. There was no hostility in his eyes, only the passion to fight him. Liyu grinned internally, a wicked grin spreading across his face. He would break his bones as well, but he wouldn’t be breaking them now.
The guy was strong after all... very, very strong. In fact, Liyu believed he might need to get pretty serious if he wanted to break his bones. But the stronger the opponent, the sweeter the feeling he would get from breaking their bones as well. So he would be leaving him for later.
His gaze shifted to the Shi Clan camp and locked onto a behemoth of a guy who was even larger than Haoran. His gaze was slightly cold and deep as he looked back at Liyu. There was a bit of hostility coming from this guy as well.
Why was he angry and looking as though he wanted to tear Liyu apart? Of course, Liyu knew why, and if he wasn’t mistaken, it would be because of the fact that he had crushed one of his allies, Shi Lan to be precise, and left him in such a miserable state.
Well, Liyu felt rather somber and pitied the poor guy. "I should break him in the same way in order to cheer him up," Liyu thought with a crazy smile. The large guy was, without any doubt, very strong, as the aura radiating from him was far from something a weakling could radiate.
Without the need to fight, Liyu could already tell that he was far, far more powerful than Shi Lan, whom he had crushed earlier. Still, as sharp and domineering as his aura was, it paled in comparison to the aura coming from the one seated a little farther away from Shi Mo.
Liyu’s gaze shifted to the guy wearing an ashen robe, whose eyes had remained closed ever since Liyu arrived... no, even before he had arrived. The air around him was filled with unbridled arrogance and superiority.
It was almost as if the entire Selection Tournament was nothing but a childish charade to him, and he could end everything whenever he wished to. "He is arrogant," Liyu thought, and then shook his head. But the arrogance was not unwarranted.
After all, Liyu didn’t need to activate his Origin Eyes to gauge someone’s power level. He could do that simply from the passive aura they gave off. Right now, it didn’t take him long at all to realise that this guy would be the most troublesome to deal with.
The fact that he couldn’t even properly gauge his strength was enough to tell him everything he needed to know.
Liyu’s smile didn’t falter. If anything, it became even more sincere. After all, he wasn’t bothered by the fact that he had a strong opponent to fight. He loved it. The stronger they were, the more fun he would have when he fought them... and the sweeter the feeling he would experience when he broke their bones as well.
Liyu’s face gleamed with a madness that, by this point, seemed deeply rooted within him. Liyu shook his head and turned his gaze back toward the Guan Clan camp. He was going to leave the best for last. He would first take out the weakest of the bunch, and the weakest here were Guan Jian and Guan Feng.
He thought of calling them out and finishing the fight rather quickly... but then his mind discarded that idea. If there was one thing Liyu hated, it was a boring fight, and the battle against Shi Lan had been rather disappointing, to say the least.
He couldn’t bear to face another weakling. But what if he fought two instead of one? Liyu’s eyes flashed. That might actually work. After all, there was no law that forbade someone from challenging two people at once instead of one at a time.
Liyu’s lips curled slightly. At least this way it wouldn’t be so boring. With that thought, his mouth opened, and he spoke.
"Alright then... you guys are next. Guan Jian and Guan Feng... come onto the stage."
The moment those words left his mouth, the crowd, who were still murmuring about the previous match... and those who were still mourning their lost coins... all froze in shock.
Their minds went completely blank from what they had just heard. Just when they thought they had finally grasped the extent of Liyu’s madness... he went and did this. He wasn’t just challenging one person who was far above his realm... he was challenging two people at the same time.
It takes some time. Several seconds passed in the shocking silence that engulfed the arena, and then someone spoke in a tone of disbelief.
"Someone wake me up if I am dreaming.... Is the Li Clan heir really challenging two people at the same time?"
"No, you aren’t dreaming, because if you are, then it would mean that the entirety of the crowd is in the same dream, and that is not possible... so you are probably in reality."
"Okay... what about the 300 gold coins that I lost as well? Maybe that one is indeed a dream."
"No, you are joking, right? Say it is gone... your coins are gone, and that is no dream either."
The man, who had been crying over the money that he had lost before but had stopped due to the shock of Li Yu’s words and his blatant challenge to two people at the same time, both of them being far above him in cultivation realm... now that he heard he was not dreaming and that his hard-earned money had truly gone to waste, he couldn’t stop himself from crying from the bottom of his heart. The murmurs of shock and discussion from the crowd continued.
"Wait... is the Li Clan heir crazy or what...?"
"He is not just crazy... he is too prideful, and I believe that his pride would pave the way for his downfall, last last."
Another butted in. "Who knows... he might just pull it off. Don’t you see how he managed to deal with Shi Lan? With that power, maybe he can pull it off."
"What are you saying? Are you crazy? Shi Lan is just one man, but he is challenging two people this time, and they aren’t just two weak people... they are the infamous Twin Fiends of the Guan Clan. Do you even know how powerful those two are?
I once saw them slay a King-grade beast with my own eyes. With that kind of power, they would be able to wipe the floor with the Li heir. His arrogance and pride would bring about his downfall, trust me."
"He would win... he might win."
"Who are those morons? There is no way he can win."
"You better leave them alone. They are a bunch of fools. There is totally no way Li Yu would be able to take down the two twin brothers of the Guan Clan. He would lose, and he would lose so badly."
"What you guys are saying is not even my concern. The 100 gold coins that I lost today would haunt me from today till I die. I don’t feel well. In fact, I think I’m struck with poverty sickness right now... wait... is the betting going to continue?"
Hearing those words from the crowd snapped the referee out of his trance. Even he, a Bronze Realm cultivator, was stunned by Li Yu’s craziness.
It was his performance that had stunned him before, but soon after, it was the fact that he was calling out two opponents to fight him at the same time that made him fall into a trance. He shook his head and waved his hand.
The betting odds on Li Yu’s name reduced drastically from fifty odds to ten odds, while the odds of his opponents... or rather, in this case, his opponents... increased from 1.8 to 4. It was a drastic change as well, and from the new betting odds it was easy to tell that Li Yu was not in the favourite position to win this match that he had placed himself in.
The referee would perhaps have made his odds two and his opponents’ even higher, making him the favourite, if not for the fact that he had bitten more than he could chew this time around.
Youth... as prideful as ever.
The referee shook his head, believing that Li Yu was about to be defeated. The audience’s discussion quickly shifted from Li Yu outrageously challenging two people at once to the betting odds that had changed drastically.
His opponents’ rising odds meant that Li Yu was no longer totally rejected and written off as someone who was definitely going to lose, as they had done before. Yet Li Yu’s odds still being higher than those of his opponents meant that he was still not the favourite to win this match once again, and the reason was clear for everyone to see...
"Wait... should I bet on the Li heir or shouldn’t I? I lost 50 gold coins and only have 5 gold coins now. If I bet it on him and he wins, I would get my lost money back... but if he loses, then I would be helpless and moneyless."
The guy shook his head before asking his friends for advice.
"I don’t know... I will be betting on the Twin Fiends. After all, if you have seen them fight before, you would be able to know that there is no hope for the Li heir winning this one," he said with confidence.
"Whatever... hope or no hope, I would be betting on the Li heir. His odds are larger. I also need to win the money to feed my family back home."
"I will bet on the Twin Fiends. There is no way they are losing this one."
"Maybe I should bet on both..."
"No, that is not allowed."
"Damn... that would have been the better choice."
The arena was filled with the crowd’s chatter as they discussed who they should stake their remaining money on. One thing they were certain of was the fact that as the games continued, the odds on each of the participants would reduce and reduce until they would no longer be able to provide any meaningful income.
So they decided to take the risk once more and stake their money on those whom their logic dictated would win. Well, some also staked on their instincts, and some on the uncertainty and hope that their luck would come through for them.
Of course, not all were able to place a bet. After all, there were some in the crowd that had totally bet everything in the last match and were now struck by poverty. They were still sobbing in the corner.
Liyu couldn’t help the twitch that appeared at the corner of his eyes as he saw the crowd lining up.
Their monumental numbers were not the reason why he was twitching. No... it was the fact that these people were all betting against him and not on him, as he had expected them to do after they had witnessed his overwhelming victory over Shi Lan.
But who would have known that they would be so stupid that they would bet against him once again? There were only about a hundred or so lining up to bet on him, while those betting against him numbered in the thousands. One could clearly see just how massive the gap was.
Liyu couldn’t help but shake his head when he saw this. "These people really have no eyes... can’t they tell I would win?" He shrugged. Their problem.
Anywhere one goes, there would always be the wise ones... and then there would always be the other ones. The fools. The wise ones gathered and earned fortunes. The foolish ones lost fortunes.
Liyu’s eyes looked at the endless line of those betting against him that stretched as far as the eye could see, and he shook his head. They were the fools... and they would be losing a fortune.
His gaze then shifted toward those betting on him, and he nodded. Those were the wise ones... and they would be earning a fortune. Liyu shook his head before joining the line of the wise ones himself. After all, he had already earned a fortune by betting on himself.
But why would he waste the opportunity to increase those earned coins by another tenfold? He was far too wise to let the chance of making even more money slip away.
He had another bet to make. Liyu’s gaze flashed as he took another step forward, getting closer to the betting stand.

Alright everyone! Time for a quick explanation of the currency system in Rayden’s world! 💰
Don’t worry, there won’t be a test afterward... probably.
The currency hierarchy goes like this:
🪙 Copper Coin – The most common currency, mainly used by ordinary people in villages and small towns.
🥉 Bronze Coin = 10 Copper Coins – Still commonly used by ordinary citizens, but worth considerably more than copper.
🥈 Silver Coin = 100 Bronze Coins – The currency of wealthy merchants, noble families, and rich non-cultivators. Most people could spend their entire lives without casually carrying one around.
🥇 Gold Coin = 1,000 Silver Coins – This is where the real money starts. Mostly used by cultivators and truly wealthy individuals. In the cultivation world, gold is the most commonly circulated high-value currency.
💚 Emerald Coin = 10,000 Gold Coins – Now we’re entering the territory of the truly powerful. These are mainly owned by great clans, powerful sects, influential merchants, and high-ranking cultivators. Most people will never even see one in their lifetime.
And finally...
The king of all currencies.
The absolute peak.
The legendary...
🖤 Obsidian Coin = 100,000 Emerald Coins!
Yes... you read that correctly.
One.
Hundred.
Thousand.
Emerald Coins.
This isn’t the kind of coin you accidentally find lying under your bed.
An Obsidian Coin possesses enough purchasing power to buy entire cities... and in some cases, even smaller sects. Only the strongest factions, ancient clans, supreme organisations, and a handful of the world’s most influential individuals possess them.
To put that into perspective...
1 Obsidian Coin = 100,000 Emerald Coins
= 1,000,000,000 Gold Coins
= 1,000,000,000,000 Silver Coins
= 100,000,000,000,000 Bronze Coins
= 1,000,000,000,000,000 Copper Coins.
Yep...
That’s ONE QUADRILLION Copper Coins.
So if an ordinary person somehow stumbled upon a single Obsidian Coin...
Congratulations.
Not only would they never have to work another day in their life, but their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and probably the next several generations after that would all be ridiculously wealthy...
Assuming, of course, nobody in the family suddenly develops the legendary cultivation technique known as "Financial Self-Destruction Art." 😅
So yes...
The currency system in this world is a little terrifying.
But don’t worry, you’ll get used to it soon enough.
As always, thank you all for reading! Don’t forget to vote, leave your thoughts in the comments, and continue supporting the novel. Every bit of support helps this author continue his cultivation journey... and maybe one day I’ll earn enough to buy my own Obsidian Coin... or at least fix my PC without crying. 😂
