THE silver hand on Soma’s terminal pressed down by itself.

No arm.

No body.

Just Kim’s right-hand authorization map, palm open over the old buy-button icon, flexing like it had nerves.

KIMMELY MERCER LEGACY HANDPRINT.

PURCHASE ROOT: PARTIAL.

AUTHORIZED TO CONFIRM RESPONSIBLE HOLDER CONTINUITY.

The 119 quarantined acceptances brightened.

Caleb’s injured palm throbbed once, answering the shape before he wanted it to. Elara’s nail marks were still open. Blood had dried along the life line and cracked when he moved his fingers.

The handprint on the screen moved the same way.

That was worse.

Kim had bought him with a hand once.

Now the dead part of that hand was trying to finish the purchase.

Kim’s text blinked on the broken terminal.

BREAK THE HAND.

Soma did not touch the keys.

"What does that cost?"

The answer came in pieces, each one slower than the last.

VOICE GONE.

FACE GONE.

ARCHIVE EIGHT GONE.

HAND ROOT HOLDS: ACCOUNTS, PURCHASE REVERSALS, SOUTH WARD BACKDOOR, PRIVATE ESCROW, OLD STREAM VAULT, REMAINING BUYER PROOF.

Tali read it once.

"If we break it, you lose the rest of your leverage."

YES.

"And some of our leverage."

YES.

"Can the chair fake this?"

The cursor waited.

Then:

YES.

Rina gave a hard little laugh. "At least the fake is learning honesty."

Another line typed.

ASK COST, NOT TRUST.

That sounded like Kim.

It also sounded like someone smart enough to fake Kim.

Sam opened the Record to a clean margin.

"State the cost as an action."

The handprint flexed again.

The 119 acceptances went from gray to pale silver.

KIMMELY MERCER HAND MAY RESOLVE DISPUTED HOLDER INTENT.

The first disputed acceptance tried to clear.

ISEUL PARK.

Her hospital dispatch line snapped open with sirens and someone yelling for a ramp jack.

"I did not ask her hand to answer for me."

The handprint ignored her.

DISPUTED INTENT REVIEWING.

AUTHORIZED BUYER MAY CLARIFY.

The silver thumb moved toward Iseul’s name.

Caleb’s injured palm answered again, a little pulse under the skin, as if old purchase math still knew where to find him.

He shoved the hand against the lift seam until pain drowned the pulse.

Good.

Pain was still honest.

Kim’s text hit the screen fast enough to stutter.

CUT MY MONEY.

CUT MY VAULT.

CUT MY RIGHT TO REFUND THEM.

CUT MY RIGHT TO SAY I BOUGHT ANYTHING FOR PROTECTION.

Caleb looked at the line until the letters blurred.

The old version of her would have killed a room before letting anyone take that sentence from her.

The current version might still hate them for it later.

That did not make the cost less real.

Soma pulled up the root map.

It was not one switch.

Of course it was not one switch.

It was a hand made of little ownerships: payment rails, donor mirrors, emergency ad accounts, old biometric notarizations, private vault signatures, safety prompts, creator payouts, proof-of-purchase records that had once made Kimmely Mercer too rich and too useful to ignore.

Every finger held a different door.

The thumb held South Ward’s backdoor.

Mira Sol’s voice came through before Soma asked.

"Cut it."

"You lose the backdoor."

"Then I use the front like everyone else."

"The front is blocked."

"Then I break a window."

Tov Ren shouted from somewhere windy, "I vote for windows."

No one had asked him.

It helped anyway.

The captured Voss remnant on the floor had gone quiet.

That made Tali look at him.

"You knew about the hand."

He licked blood from his teeth.

"Everybody knew about the hand. Nobody thought she would break it."

"Why?"

He looked at the silver map with something close to awe.

"People cut faces. People burn voices. Rich people never break the hand that signs."

Cassius gave a dry cough from the lift.

"That part is true."

Sam’s pen moved.

"Also recorded."

The silver hand pressed harder.

ACCEPTANCE REVIEW READY.

Soma put the root map on full frame.

"Public witnesses, no matching phrase. We are cutting five fingers. Each one is a cost. Name what it was, then name what it no longer owns."

Tali looked at him.

"That is almost a ritual."

"Then make it ugly."

Rina took the thumb.

"South Ward backdoor. No longer Kim’s hand."

Mira repeated it differently.

"South Ward hears the window breaking. No owner."

The thumb snapped backward on the map.

South Ward lost its clean route at once.

On Mira’s feed, every vending wall went black.

People shouted in the dark. A door alarm started screaming because someone had already taken Tov Ren’s advice and put a crate through a side window. Rain came in with them.

Mira’s face appeared by phone light.

"Still open," she said, breathing hard. "Worse door. Our door."

Kim’s text froze for three seconds.

Then:

KEEP GOING.

Sam took the index finger.

"Purchase proof. No longer protection."

Nari Lin answered from Avo’s phone.

"Buying is not saving. Ask my dead boy."

The index finger broke.

All over the public-holder seed, old premium badges lost their shine.

People who had paid for priority rescue access saw their receipts turn into disputed claims. Some cursed Kim. Some cursed Caleb. One man in a gold donor frame threw his phone hard enough to crack the camera.

The 119 acceptances dimmed by twenty-three.

No miracle.

Progress.

Davi took the middle finger before anyone could stop him.

"Old stream vault. No more clean face. No more music. No more clip with the ugly parts removed."

The middle finger bent until the silver joint split.

Davi’s edit bay lost half its recovered footage.

Old clips grayed out behind him: clean tower angles, rescued faces, Kim’s best proof that her damage had sometimes pointed in the right direction.

He looked sick.

He cut anyway.

Soma took the ring finger.

"Private escrow. No longer rescue leverage."

Halden’s widow answered from her kitchen.

"Money is not memory."

The ring finger broke.

Private escrow accounts shut in a row.

Refund routes failed.

Dispute routes opened.

Messier.

Slower.

Harder to make pretty.

One finger left.

The smallest.

The one holding refund authority.

Soma’s hand hovered.

"If we cut this, the refunds Kim opened in Chapter 229 may stop. Some buyer weight could stay disputed."

Kim’s answer came slow.

THEN THEY DISPUTE ME TOO.

Sefa looked at the screen with blood still under his nails.

"Good."

He took the last finger.

"Refund authority. No longer confession. No longer proof she meant well."

Avo’s phone crackled with Nari breathing on the line.

"Meaning well did not keep him alive."

The smallest finger broke.

The silver handprint spasmed open.

For one ugly second it looked human.

Then Soma drove the sever command through the broken map.

KIMMELY MERCER LEGACY HANDPRINT: INVALID.

PURCHASE ROOT: SEVERED.

The 119 acceptances went dark.

Not resolved.

Dark.

Held for human review, which was slower, worse, and alive.

Kim’s terminal stayed blank.

Caleb waited.

Nothing.

No voice.

No face.

No hand.

The absence hit harder than a message would have.

Then one line appeared, typed badly, missing two letters.

STILL ME.

Soma covered his mouth with the back of his hand.

No one said they believed it.

That would have been too easy.

Sam wrote the line anyway.

"Kim Mercer, text only, after severed hand root. Claim not verified. Cost recorded."

Caleb read the missing letters again.

Still me.

Not clean.

Not forgiven.

Not owner.

Still there, reduced to a damaged line that could be fake and still had to be answered carefully because sometimes survival looked exactly that ugly.

The garage did not get to breathe.

The phones buzzed before anyone touched them, a hard insect sound under every covered hand below in the wet garage.

Every public-holder phone lit again.

KIMMELY MERCER ROOT SEVERED.

SUBSTITUTE CONFIRMING HAND REQUIRED.

PUBLIC HOLDER SEED: 6,184 HANDS AVAILABLE.
