THE garage went quiet for the wrong reason.

Not peace.

Anticipation.

Every screen had the same clean prompt.

MANUAL CONFIRMATION ROUTE AVAILABLE.

SUBJECT: REID.

CONFIRMING HAND: DANA.

Sefa said the thing first.

"Do not let them sell this as love."

The words hit harder than a warning siren.

Elara sat against the wall with blood running from the torn order band, pistol loose beside her knee, mouth open around a voice the band had taken. Her right hand twitched.

The prompt brightened.

CONFIRMING HAND ACTIVE.

Caleb still had one arm in the lift seam.

He could move.

That was the problem.

He could cross the room, catch her wrist, hold her still, save himself from the touch, save the city from the click the Woman had hidden under skin. He could also turn every full-frame feed into exactly what the prompt wanted: Caleb controlling Elara’s body for everyone’s safety.

Rina saw the thought on his face.

"Do not grab her."

"I know."

"No," she said. "Hear it anyway."

He heard it.

Elara’s body pushed itself up the wall.

Her legs shook. Her left hand stayed pressed against the torn band. Her right hand lifted and reached for Caleb.

No counted moves left.

No voice.

The leash had stopped bargaining in visible pieces. Now it just used what remained.

Davi’s full frame widened until the whole garage was visible: Caleb at the lift seam, Elara crossing the concrete, the foundation witness holding Cassius’s chair, Avo’s covered body, Orren Kai’s name on the control panel, public holders with phones face-down.

NO CROP, Davi wrote.

Tali added, "No music. No caption."

Soma killed three mirrors that tried to add a soft border anyway.

One Restoration account tried to frame it as reunion.

It put a green edge around Caleb and Elara before Davi cut the feed.

Another mirror pulled an old Day Seventeen clip from somewhere dirty: rain, half a face, Caleb reaching through smoke. The clip lasted less than two seconds before Soma killed it, but two seconds was enough for the prompt to test the shape.

ROMANTIC CONTEXT AVAILABLE.

Rina’s voice went flat.

"No."

Sefa stepped in front of the garage camera until his bloody shirt filled the frame.

"A leashed body is not a love scene."

The public holders repeated that in pieces, badly enough that it could not become a clean slogan.

Leashed is not love.

Forced hand.

No scene.

No soft border.

Nari Lin added from Avo’s phone, "Anyone putting music on this can rot."

That one spread fastest.

Rina let it.

Elara took another step.

The prompt counted distance.

THREE METERS.

TWO.

Caleb opened his burned hand.

"Elara," he said.

Her eyes found his.

That was all she had.

"If you can make it evidence, make it evidence."

The order dragged her the last step.

Her right hand landed on his palm.

Skin to burned skin.

The contact tried to become memory.

It tried to become the night under the rain at Day Seventeen, the almost-touch that had kept both of them alive, the longing the Woman had been saving because honest want made better bait than lies.

Caleb did not close his fingers.

Elara did.

Her nails drove into the split in his palm.

Hard.

Mean.

Chosen in the only place she could still choose.

Blood came up between their hands.

The prompt flashed.

MANUAL CONTACT ACHIEVED.

CONFIRMATION PENDING.

Rina was already moving.

"Full frame. Hand position. Injury. No returned grip."

Sam wrote so fast the pen tore paper.

"Manual contact under active compliance. Confirming hand produced injury. Subject did not enclose, pull, hold, or accept."

The prompt resisted.

CONTACT ACCEPTED.

Caleb spoke through his teeth.

"I do not accept contact as consent."

The silver in his body hated that sentence.

It wanted to seal the wound, hold the hand, make the hurt mean something clean.

He let it hurt.

Elara’s nails went deeper.

She shook so hard her shoulder hit his chest, but the hand stayed ugly. No caress. No claim. No tender shape for a public clip to steal.

Sefa crouched near Avo’s covered body and pointed at the blood on Caleb’s palm.

"That is not a yes. That is a wound."

Public holders repeated it badly.

Not a yes.

A wound.

Not a yes.

A wound.

Rina cut them off.

"Do not chant it."

They broke apart into rougher words.

"She hurt him."

"Forced hand."

"Blood mark."

"No hold."

The form tried to salvage the contact.

RECIPIENT RESPONSE REQUIRED.

PLEASE COMFORT CONFIRMING PARTY.

That one almost got him.

Caleb’s whole body moved half an inch toward her before he caught himself.

Elara’s nails tore sideways.

Pain snapped the motion dead.

Good.

She had seen it.

She had stopped him.

Tali’s voice came from behind him, low and brutal.

"It wants tenderness as signature."

Cassius was pale in the lift.

"Old intimacy capture," he said. "Touch, comfort, returned hold. We sold it for witness stabilization after disaster scenes. A human thing made into proof."

Sam did not look at him.

"Your part is recorded."

The prompt pulsed again.

RECIPIENT RESPONSE REQUIRED.

Caleb looked at Elara’s eyes.

"I want to help you."

Her nails held.

"I am not touching back until you can ask."

The prompt stalled.

Rina leaned into the nearest camera.

"Unavailable answer means no consent. Injury is not confirmation. Care withheld under coercion is not abandonment."

That last sentence mattered because Elara was bleeding.

Everyone could see it.

The torn band had cut a red line under her jaw. Her right hand was slick from Caleb’s palm. Her knees were shaking hard enough to knock together when the order dragged breath through her.

The decent thing looked obvious.

Catch her.

Hold the wound.

Tell her she had done enough.

The decent thing was bait when someone else wrote the receipt.

Tali tore a field bandage from an officer’s kit and threw it to the floor between Rina and Elara.

"No handoff," Tali said. "She takes it if she can."

The bandage slid across the concrete and stopped against Elara’s boot.

Elara looked down.

For two breaths, nothing happened.

Then her left hand, the one pressed against the torn band, dragged the bandage up by two fingers.

Not much.

Enough to prove a direction still lived under the leash.

June repeated it from Aldgate with different words.

Mira Sol did the same from South Ward.

Iseul Park did it from hospital dispatch, breathless and furious.

The form lost its rhythm.

MANUAL CONFIRMATION: CONTESTED.

CONTACT CLASSIFICATION: HARM.

RECIPIENT RESPONSE: REFUSAL TO ACCEPT.

The order band around Elara’s throat sparked.

Her hand released at once.

Not gently.

It was ripped away.

She dropped to one knee, and Caleb still did not catch her.

He hated himself for one beat.

Then Rina slid between them and put her own hands where Elara could see them.

"Elara, I am Rina. I am not touching you. I am staying here."

Elara’s eyes closed.

The manual route failed.

MANUAL CONFIRMATION DENIED.

The lift screen went black.

Kim’s text appeared on Soma’s dead terminal, one letter at a time.

NO VOICE.

NO FACE.

STILL HAVE ONE HAND.

Soma went cold.

"Kim?"

The answer typed itself under the first line.

NOT SAFE.

A ghost image loaded beside the words.

Not a photograph.

A signer map.

KIMMELY MERCER LEGACY HANDPRINT.

RIGHT-HAND AUTHORIZATION ROOT.

LAST VERIFIED PURCHASE EVENT.

The outline of the hand was clean, silver at the joints, with one old stream icon embedded in the center of the palm.

Caleb knew that icon.

The buy button.

Kim had lost her face.

Lost her voice.

The old system still had her hand.

On the map, the silver palm flexed once like something waking under glass and waiting for permission from someone.

BREAK THE HAND.
