THE DOOR behind the woman’s chair waited with its frame lit white.

Lower Admissions had gone quiet around Sefa, as if the room had spent all its breath letting him out.

Caleb kept his empty wrist at his side. The skin there felt bare. The silver beneath it felt awake, insulted by the missing ring.

Sefa took one careful step, then another. Rina moved with him but kept her hands visible. Iharu stayed close enough for the tower card in his jacket to glow against Sefa’s shoulder.

"Pain scale?" Tali asked.

Sefa looked at her.

"For him, me, or the building?"

"Yes."

He almost smiled. "Bad. Manageable. I reserve the right to be rude."

Kikaru’s blade angled toward the door. "Rudeness accepted. Walking?"

Sefa considered the white frame.

"That room knows my outline. It spent months using me as shelving. If I go, I may see where it kept the labels."

Caleb said, "Your choice."

Sefa nodded once. "Then I go."

Sam tucked Page Zero behind Sefa’s page; it had cooled to paper again, old and thin.

"Page Zero is closed. Record still active."

The screen printed:

CENTER REVIEW RESUMES.

TWELFTH SEAT AWAITS.

RELEASE PRECEDENT STORED.

Rina wiped her face. "Precedent?"

The woman’s voice came from the dark. "You proved consent can complete divided work."

Sam’s mouth tightened. "Consent to one thing is only consent to one thing."

"Of course," the woman said. "So let him choose the larger thing."

Caleb felt his heart beat slow and heavy. He used Marek’s count.

In for four.

Hold for two.

Out for six.

His body waited at the edge of the count, eager.

"Mine means Caleb," he said softly.

The silver settled by a fraction.

Tali lifted one hand. "Recommendation. Terms before threshold."

Soma moved to a wall console that had risen beside the empty beds. "The console has seven live fields. Attendance, custody, vessel, foundation, public memory, seat, outcome."

"Foundation?" Sam asked.

Hiro’s voice broke in from the safe-house line. "The statue just stood up."

Everyone turned toward Soma’s receiver.

Hiro breathed hard. "Easy. I’m still in bed. It stood beside the table. Sleeve on VOSS-07 copy. Hand on Mina’s page. It wants the line open."

The screen in Lower Admissions answered:

FOUNDATION WITNESS ONLINE.

RETURNED CHOICE PRESENT BY COPY.

Sefa looked toward Caleb. "It followed you here without leaving him."

"Good trick," Iharu said.

"Good refusal," Sam corrected. "It chose a shape the center fails to drag."

The door opened wider.

The room beyond brightened.

It held a circular floor with twelve recessed marks. Eleven pointed inward. The twelfth sat at the center beneath a plain chair.

Plain was worse.

The arms were smooth. The seat had normal proportions. It looked ordinary enough for a man to convince himself he had only sat down.

Caleb’s right foot wanted the threshold.

He made it wait.

"Terms," he said.

The screen above the chair printed:

STANDING REVIEW AVAILABLE.

SEATING REVIEW AVAILABLE.

VESSEL MAY REQUEST FULL COMPLETION.

Tali read fast. "They made standing a menu item."

"Because he taught them the word," the woman said.

She stood on the far side of the room, calm among white walls and old metal marks.

"That should comfort you. The building listens."

"Listening and using are cousins here," Sefa said.

The woman looked at him at last.

"You speak beautifully whole."

"I intend to become annoying with practice."

Rina made a sound that might have been a laugh if the room had allowed softer sounds to survive.

Caleb stepped to the threshold.

The chair lights woke.

A silver line ran across the floor and stopped at his boots.

VESSEL PROXIMITY DETECTED.

SILVER SPREAD: 96 PERCENT.

CENTER TOLERANCE: WITHIN FOUR PERCENT.

CHAIR RESPONSE: READY.

His skin tightened from ribs to throat. The seven-marked fragment in his hand warmed.

Sam moved beside him. "Caleb."

"I know."

"Say it."

"Body waits for me."

The line at his boots dimmed.

The screen changed:

SELF-COMMAND RECOGNIZED.

CONTROL EVENT LOGGED.

SILVER SPREAD: 97 PERCENT.

Rina swore under her breath.

"It moved because he held it back," Soma said.

The woman smiled faintly. "Control is growth. Growth is arrival."

"Growth is also healing," Sefa said. "Your definitions lack manners."

Caleb flexed his fingers once. The extra percent felt like a room added behind his eyes. More space. More pull. More of himself, or more for something else to occupy.

He kept the question visible and kept walking.

One step inside.

The center chair turned toward him.

Intelligently.

Kikaru crossed with him, blade low. Iharu brought Sefa. Rina stayed half a step from Sefa’s left shoulder. Tali counted positions under her breath. Sam carried the Record against his chest.

Every mark in the floor responded to them.

CUSTODIAN PRESENT.

WITNESS PRESENT.

RELEASED SUBJECT PRESENT.

FOUNDATION WITNESS PRESENT BY COPY.

VESSEL PRESENT.

Then:

SEAT VACANT.

"Keep it vacant," Kikaru said.

The chair ignored him.

Caleb looked at the woman. "You wanted Sefa to point me here."

"I wanted you to reach him."

"You wanted proof."

"I wanted you to understand what you are good at."

The marks around the room brightened one at a time. Pasco. Halden. Okonye. Marek. VOSS-07. Sefa. The names appeared as small white fields above each mark, then settled into the floor.

Sam opened the Record. "Those names are released."

"Yes," the woman said. "And each release made him more precise. More stable. More able to stand inside the completed pattern."

Sefa’s jaw hardened.

"So I was bait and evidence."

"You were a person," she said. "That made you useful."

Rina moved before Caleb did. She put herself between Sefa and the woman, tracker raised like a ridiculous little shield.

"He is useful to himself now."

The tracker flashed green.

CLAIM HOLDER STATEMENT ACCEPTED.

The woman almost looked pleased. "Good. You understand claim."

Caleb said, "Stop teaching through traps."

"I am teaching through reality. You call it a trap because the lesson hurts."

Sam’s hand tightened on the Record.

The chair printed another line across its back:

VESSEL CLAIM REVIEW READY.

Tali stepped closer to Caleb. "Careful. This is Sefa’s script turned on you."

"Name. Harm. Direction," Sam said.

"Exactly," the woman said.

The floor under Caleb’s boots warmed.

VESSEL CLAIM REVIEW:

SUBJECT: REID.

STATUS: SECOND MIDDLE.

CONDITION: NEAR COMPLETE.

QUESTION ONE: DO YOU ANSWER TO THIS NAME?

The silver in Caleb’s throat wanted to answer before his mouth moved.

He caught it. He made space between impulse and sound.

"I answer to Caleb."

QUESTION TWO:

WHAT HARM HELD YOU?

The room grew still.

Sam’s expression changed. Not fear. Anger sharpened enough to stand on.

"That is outside scope," he said.

The center printed:

VESSEL CLAIM REVIEW REQUIRED FOR STANDING ENTRY.

The woman waited with hands folded.

Caleb felt every easy answer crowd near his teeth.

Aldric. The yard. The vault. The chair. The woman. The father who left instructions inside love. The mother who carried keys and sorrow. The city that called him asset, threat, miracle, property.

Too many true answers made a net.

Marek’s lesson pressed under his ribs.

Listen before moving.

He listened.

The harm beneath all the harms had a simpler shape.

"Everyone kept trying to name what I was before asking who I am."

The chair clicked once.

Sam exhaled.

The screen accepted it.

HARM STATEMENT RECEIVED.

QUESTION THREE:

WANTED DIRECTION?

The chair turned a fraction more toward him.

The woman said, very softly, "Say center."

Caleb looked at Sefa, alive and shaking. At Rina’s tracker. At Sam’s Record. At the open line to Hiro and the foundation witness. At the marks around the floor, all the names already returned.

He looked at the chair last.

"Standing," he said.

The room went white.

STANDING REVIEW INVOKED.

SEATING REVIEW HELD IN RESERVE.

The floor mark beneath Caleb’s boots split into two lines.

One led to the chair.

One led behind it, down.

The woman stopped smiling.

That was enough reward for one breath.

The center printed:

VESSEL MAY APPROACH WITHOUT SITTING.

NEXT REVIEW: THE ELEVEN.

Beneath the words, deeper metal began to move.

Hiro’s voice crackled over the line.

"Guys. The statue just bowed to the floor."

Soma looked at his console.

"External attendance just multiplied."

In the room, the eleven inward marks lit at once.

Far away, under the city, something answered Caleb’s name.
