Chapter 205: His Own Name
SEFA AMADI stood alone on the floor.
Green and white together.
The remaining names had gone pale around him, copy marks now, witnesses now, proof that the index had been crowded by people and emptied by people.
The screen printed:
FINAL SUBJECT CLAIM REQUIRED.
VESSEL PROXIMITY STILL REQUIRED.
The last light ring around Caleb’s wrist tightened.
It was smaller now. Meaner for being smaller. A final thread of Sefa’s light wound around Caleb’s skin, afraid of returning and afraid of staying out.
Sefa breathed through the room speaker.
In for four.
Hold for two.
Out for six.
Marek’s count held in another man’s voice.
Rina put one hand to the glass.
"Sefa Amadi. Do you answer to that name?"
"I answer."
The floor warmed.
Sam opened the Record to Sefa’s page.
"What harm held you?" he asked.
The woman in the chair went still.
Sefa answered before she could infect the air with explanation.
"I was divided into useful pieces. Witness. Anchor. Claim. Light. Voice. Index. She called the pieces stable because a whole man could refuse her."
The Record wrote fast.
Rina’s eyes stayed on the glass.
"Wanted direction?"
The room waited.
Caleb felt the answer before Sefa said it, because the light on his wrist pulled toward the case and the silver under his skin pulled back.
"Into myself," Sefa said. "Out with my name."
The screen flashed:
SELF CLAIM INCOMPLETE.
VESSEL PROXIMITY REQUIRED FOR LIGHT RETURN.
Caleb’s right foot shifted.
He stopped it.
"One step," he said. "My choice."
Sam moved beside him, close enough to catch a mistake, far enough to leave the choice visible.
Caleb stepped toward the glass.
VESSEL PROXIMITY ACKNOWLEDGED.
VESSEL MAY COMPLETE SUBJECT CLAIM.
"No intake," Caleb said.
The screen held the offer.
VESSEL MAY COMPLETE SUBJECT CLAIM.
Sefa spoke, clear and tired.
"Do not complete me."
The last light ring burned cold.
Rina’s voice sharpened. "Then what do you want him to do?"
"Stand close."
Caleb looked at the case.
Sefa continued. "Hold still. Let go when I pull."
Tali’s gaze moved between Caleb’s wrist and the woman. "Recommendation. Vessel states limits."
Caleb nodded.
"I can stand close. I can keep my hand outside. I can let the light leave. I will not pull."
Page Zero warmed.
VESSEL LIMITS RECORDED.
Sam lifted the Record with both hands.
"Custodian refuses transfer."
The page answered under his thumb.
CUSTODIAN REFUSAL ACTIVE.
Rina raised the tracker beside the glass.
"Claim holder refuses ownership. I hold the route because he asked me to."
Iharu touched the tower witness card in his pocket.
"Anchor stays living. His tower keeps its light."
Tali watched the slot, the woman, and Caleb’s hand.
"Containment refuses command language. All moves by request."
Soma’s voice came from the comm, low and exact.
"External witnesses remain live."
The screen took all of it in.
RELEASE CONDITIONS HELD BY MULTIPLE CLAIMS.
Sefa breathed once.
"Then ask me the last part."
The case opened a narrow slot.
Caleb lifted his wrist to it.
The remaining light pressed toward the gap.
The silver under Caleb’s skin surged.
Mine.
He answered it before it reached his fingers.
"Mine means Caleb."
The silver halted.
The light kept moving.
It pulled against his skin with a frightened animal strength.
Caleb set his palm flat against the glass beside the slot.
"Sefa. Do you want this light back?"
"Yes."
"Do you want me to give it?"
"No."
The word was soft.
The room heard it as a blade.
Sefa said, "I want you to stop holding the edge."
Caleb closed his eyes.
Not to hide.
To find the line between holding and helping.
He opened his hand.
The light left him.
It hurt worse than taking it had.
The silver inside him lunged after the ring. Sam said his name. Rina said Sefa’s. Marek’s count moved under both.
Caleb stayed still.
The last light slipped through the slot and entered the case.
Inside, the ring settled over Sefa’s heart.
The shadow behind the glass filled with a body-shaped brightness, thin and human, gathered from six jobs into one outline.
The tracker in Rina’s hand turned green.
LIGHT FUNCTION RETURNED BY SUBJECT ACTION.
VESSEL INTAKE DENIED.
The screen fought it.
SUBJECT STILL CONTESTED.
SELF CLAIM REQUIRED.
Sam read from the Record. "Sefa. Name yourself."
Sefa’s laugh came through the speaker, rough and almost alive.
"That sounds easy."
"Easy things become rare in this building," Soma said.
Sefa breathed again.
Then he spoke slowly, building the answer one piece at a time.
"I am Sefa Amadi."
The glass brightened.
"I witnessed harm. I held too many names because someone used my tower as a shelf."
Iharu swallowed hard.
Sefa continued.
"My tower stands because people looked up and remembered I built it. My anchor stays living. My claim stays with people who answer when I call."
Rina’s hand tightened around the tracker.
"My voice is mine even when it shakes."
The speaker cleared further.
"My light is mine even when I lend it."
Caleb kept his empty wrist lifted until Sam gently guided it down.
Sefa’s final words came without static.
"My index is empty. My name is mine. I choose myself."
Sam answered first.
"Self-claim witnessed."
Rina wiped her face with the heel of one hand and kept the tracker high.
"Claim witnessed."
Iharu said something in his own language, soft enough that the room tried to ignore it.
The tower card warmed through his jacket.
"Anchor witnessed," he said.
Tali’s eyes stayed dry and bright.
"Consent witnessed."
Caleb looked at his empty wrist.
It ached.
He wanted to close his hand around the missing weight.
He left it open.
"Vessel refusal held."
Page Zero flared hot enough that Sam almost dropped the Record.
Marcus’s ink wrote across Sefa’s page:
FINAL SUBJECT CLAIM ACCEPTED.
VESSEL PROXIMITY COMPLETE.
LOAD ASSUMPTION DENIED.
SEFA AMADI REASSEMBLED BY CONSENT.
The case unlocked.
The sound was small.
It broke the room anyway.
Rina made a noise and pressed both hands to the glass as the front seam opened.
Iharu caught her shoulder before she fell into it.
The green rings collapsed inward, not breaking, returning. Witness, voice, light, and the empty index folded into the shape behind the glass. Anchor stayed outside in the living claim. Claim stayed in Rina’s tracker.
Sefa stepped out of the case like a man stepping down from a place too high for stairs.
He was made of light at the edges and shadow at the center.
He was thin.
He was there.
Rina reached for him and stopped with her fingers inches from his sleeve.
The old habit held.
Ask.
"Can I?"
Sefa looked at her hand.
Then at Iharu.
Then at Caleb’s empty wrist.
"Yes."
Rina touched his sleeve.
She started crying without sound.
Iharu put one hand over both of theirs.
The tower witness card in his pocket glowed once and went dark.
The center screen printed:
CONTESTED SUBJECT RELEASED.
INDEX REVIEW COMPLETE.
PAGE ZERO WINDOW CLOSING.
The woman in the chair stood.
Kikaru’s blade rose.
This time the woman ignored it.
She looked at Caleb, not Sefa.
"You emptied my hook."
Caleb let his arm hang at his side.
It felt too light.
"He emptied himself."
The center lights shifted from green to white.
Every bed in Lower Admissions folded into the floor.
The door behind the woman’s chair opened.
Not the service stair.
Something deeper.
The screen changed:
RELEASE REVIEW COMPLETE.
CENTER REVIEW RESUMES.
TWELFTH SEAT AWAITS.
Sam shut the Record.
The sound put everyone back in their bodies.
Sefa turned his head toward the open door.
"That is where she wanted me to point you."
Caleb looked at the dark beyond it.
"Then you don’t point."
Sefa’s mouth twitched.
"I can complain."
Hiro’s voice cracked over the safe-house line.
"We accept him."
Rina laughed through tears.
The woman stepped through the open door.
Her voice came back from the dark.
"Come standing, then."
Caleb looked at Sam.
Sam held the Record against his chest.
Tali checked the room with one sweep of her eyes.
"Recommendation. We decide before the room decides for us."
Caleb breathed.
His wrist was empty.
His body was still ninety-six percent silver.
Sefa stood outside the case, held by his own name.
"Accepted," Caleb said.
