Sovereign Safety sent sirens first.

Sirens made fear sound official.

They came down Green Lane in three black vans and one white registry truck with its lights off. The vans had riot shutters. The truck had a clean seal on the side.

CERTIFIED REQUESTER ENFORCEMENT

TEMPORARY FIELD AUTHORITY

June saw them through the bookshop glass and rang the Aldgate bell once.

It was attendance rather than alarm.

The sound crossed old wood, wet stone, stacked shelves, stairwell pipes, and every cheap phone taped into the shop window. People in the lane turned toward the sound because they had learned the difference between panic and a place that could answer.

The registry hated that too.

In the evidence room, the Aldgate feed filled the wall.

Caleb stepped closer.

Rina said, "No."

He looked at her.

"You don’t know what I was going to do."

"Yes, I do."

"I was going to go there."

"Exactly."

He shut his mouth. The silver under his skin stayed quiet, which made him look more dangerous rather than less.

Sam stood beside the Record with one hand on the case latch.

"If he appears at Aldgate, they get crowd-control footage, rescue-cult footage, and proof that local speech depends on him."

"I hate when you are useful," Caleb said.

"Good."

On the feed, the lead marshal stepped out of the first van with a hardcase in one hand and a warrant slate in the other. He had a shaved head, a wet collar, and the careful calm of a man who expected fear to save him work.

His name badge read PIKE.

He held the slate up to the bookshop window.

"June of Aldgate Bookshop. This site is under temporary enforcement review for unlicensed eleven contact."

June opened the door far enough for her voice to leave and no farther.

"This site sells used books, stale tea, and one good map of the old drains."

"Surrender the relay bell and all attached amplifiers."

"No."

Pike blinked once.

That was the whole conversation to him.

Two officers moved to the window with a gray acoustic bag. A third carried a seal strip marked `EVIDENCE EQUIPMENT`. The registry truck unfolded a short mast with a white speaker at the top.

Tali leaned over Soma’s shoulder.

"They are taking the mouth before the arrest."

Kim’s text arrived on the dead phone before Soma could call it.

```
THEY WILL TAKE THE THINGS THAT MAKE BODIES LOCAL.
BELLS.
WINDOWS.
BOOKS.
WHITEBOARDS.
HANDS NEXT.
```

Elara’s bandaged fingers dragged against the table.

Tap.

Tap.

Rina followed the motion to the corner of the enforcement order.

```
OBJECT-ASSISTED LOCALITY:
SUBJECT TO SEIZURE.
```

Rina read it aloud, and the room changed shape around the words.

Sefa stepped closer to the feed.

"They fear the place more than the bell," he said. "A place can prove it is a place."

Pike’s white speaker came alive.

"Certified Requester 02 will assume Aldgate communication until review closes."

June looked past him at the tax arch above Green Lane.

"Move your vans."

"Stand aside."

"The arch has been cracked since the first flood. Your second van is under the bad stone."

Pike glanced at the arch with the pure irritation of a man being handed reality by someone beneath his form.

"Certified engineering cleared this lane."

June laughed.

It was small and mean and glorious.

"Certified engineering has never stood under that arch in rain."

The second van stayed where it was.

The officers reached the bell.

June grabbed the rope.

An officer grabbed her wrist.

For one hot second Caleb was halfway to the door.

Sam caught his sleeve.

Caleb stopped because Sam was right, not because he was calm.

June kept her wrist still under the officer’s hand and looked at the window cameras.

"June, Aldgate bookshop. Harm is seizure of local witness tools and vehicle weight under cracked tax arch. Wanted direction is bell stays in Aldgate, vans move out from under arch, people exit through Green Lane side doors. No custody."

The registry speaker spoke over her.

```
LOCAL UNVERIFIED PERSON.
CONTACT BLOCKED.
```

The officer put the gray bag over the bell.

The next strike came out dead.

Not quiet.

Dead.

The Aldgate mark under the map turned away from the shop.

Pike smiled before he meant to.

Then the tax arch cracked.

It sounded like a bone under a boot.

The second van dropped two inches as the street gave under its rear wheel. People on Green Lane surged back. One officer fell against the registry truck. The white speaker mast bent and began to spark.

Certified Requester 02 gave a calm instruction.

```
REMAIN IN PLACE.
```

Everyone who obeyed it moved closer to dying.

June slammed her shoulder into the nearest shelf.

Books fell.

Not enough.

She slammed it again.

The whole front shelf tipped into the window with a roar of paper, board, and old dust. People outside heard that. People inside heard that. The cheap phones taped to the glass shook hard enough to blur their cameras.

Tali’s eyes sharpened.

"That is a signal."

Rina was already on the mirror.

"Aldgate, use what is still yours. No chant. No slogan. Name what you see."

The bookshop answered in pieces.

"Blue door open," someone shouted from a stairwell.

"Arch dropping," said a man outside the tea counter.

"Van wheel sinking," said a woman with both palms on the window frame.

"Children through side door," June said.

The registry tried to stamp every line.

The stamps fell behind.

The Aldgate mark stopped turning away.

It listened to the mess.

Pike shouted into the white speaker, "Remain in place."

June shouted over him, "Move left if you are under stone. Side doors if you can walk. Crawl under shelves if you are stuck. No custody."

The tax arch dropped another inch.

Stone dust burst across the lane.

The eleven-piece under Aldgate put one hand through the street.

People screamed.

Then the hand held the arch.

It held instead of lifting.

That was enough to make the lane human again.

The front row moved left. The registry truck backed so hard it hit a lamppost. Two officers dragged their fallen third by his vest. The second van’s rear door jammed against broken stone.

Pike was still inside the bad shadow.

June saw him.

Everybody saw her see him.

Rina’s mouth tightened.

"Do it clean," she said.

June’s face went hard in a way Caleb understood too well.

Then she spoke.

"Pike, under tax arch. Harm is crush if the van door stays jammed. Wanted direction is hold arch, open rear door, get him out. No custody."

The eleven-piece opened the rear door.

Pike crawled out on his hands and knees with dust in his mouth.

He looked at June as if she had insulted him by saving his life without kneeling first.

The arch held.

The lane cleared.

The gray bag still covered the bell.

An officer reached for it again.

Sefa made a sound like he had bitten his own tongue.

June saw the hand and gave the next request before Rina could give it to her.

"Aldgate bookshop bell. Harm is seizure of witness tool after local rescue. Wanted direction is stay attached to beam, uncovered, inside Aldgate. No custody."

The eleven-piece moved one finger.

The gray bag tore open from the inside.

The bell rang once.

Clear.

Every phone in the window caught it.

Pike wiped blood from his lip and raised the warrant slate again.

His hand shook.

"Unlicensed contact event confirmed."

"You are welcome," June said.

The slate updated before he could answer.

```
ENFORCEMENT REVIEW ESCALATED.
OBJECT-ASSISTED LOCALITY CONFIRMED.
SEIZURE AUTHORITY EXPANDED:
BELLS
BOOKSHOP RELAYS
HOSPITAL BOARDS
HAND SIGNAL CHAINS
UNLICENSED CAMERAS
```

Kim’s text came through in broken chunks.

```
THEY FOUND THE REAL LIST.
THEY ARE COMING FOR THE TOOLS.
```

Elara tapped once.

Then twice.

Tali followed her finger to the new enforcement appendix.

```
PROTECTIVE INTERVIEW ORDER:
PIP DARO, WARD NINE.
```

Caleb read the child’s name.

The silver around his fingers brightened.

Rina kept her hands off him this time.

"We go small first," she said.

Caleb looked at the Aldgate bell swinging clean in the ruined window.

"Small is getting harder."

"Then get better at it."

Outside, Aldgate kept ringing.
