Chapter 57: This can’t be mark
Logan did not run like a man who had just been caught. He ran like a man who refused to be.
The side path dumped him onto the service road behind the Hale property. A delivery van sat dark under a tree. He cut behind it, pulled his hood up, and kept his face away from the two cameras he remembered from earlier visits. His lungs were fine. The upgraded physique made the sprint feel like a warm-up. The problem was not his body. The problem was the clock on his phone.
14:11
He could leave. The mission would still call that an exit. The bonus condition would fail. Fourteen days with Stephanie frozen meant fourteen days of Paul putting hands back on a woman Logan had just filled. That thought sat in his stomach like glass.
A mark Paul could not prove and could not ignore.
Logan turned around.
He did not go back through the kitchen. He went to the side garden where Stephanie kept the outdoor cabinet for pool chemicals and spare towels. He had watched her open it once when she thought he was only there about Hydra paperwork. Inside: towels, sunscreen, a spare house tablet used for the gate and the indoor cameras.
The tablet woke with her face still logged in. She had been too panicked to lock it.
Logan’s mouth went dry in a good way.
He did not dump the camera footage. That would look like theft. He clipped the last forty minutes from the upstairs hallway camera and the bedroom door camera, stored the raw files to a hidden folder labeled GARDEN_IRRIGATION_2024, then set the live hallway feed on a twelve minute loop of empty carpet. Anyone watching right now would see nothing. Anyone checking later would need to know where to look.
Then he did the mark.
On the kitchen counter, in the fruit bowl Paul always walked past first, Logan set Stephanie’s wedding ring. She had taken it off before the massage. It had been on the bathroom sink. He had palmed it when he washed. Next to the ring he left a receipt from the coffee place she liked, dated today, paid from his account. Small money. Real money. Traceable if Paul wanted to be petty, meaningless if Paul wanted to look sane in front of staff.
A ring off her hand.
A receipt that was not Paul’s.
No fingerprints on a weapon.
No video of a bed.
Paul would see it and feel it. He would not be able to wave it at a board.
Logan was back over the hedge with 00:06:19 on the clock when the first wash of headlights touched the front gate.
He dropped behind the neighbor’s wall and watched.
Paul got out like a man who expected the house to flinch. Tall. Still built. Travel bag in one hand. Phone in the other. Andrew was not with him. That was the only mercy the night offered.
The front door opened. Stephanie stood in the robe, hair pulled back now, face arranged. From this distance Logan could not hear the first words. He saw Paul’s mouth move. He saw Stephanie step aside. He saw Paul walk in like he still owned the air.
[Emergency mission: SUCCESS]
[Bonus condition: SUCCESS]
[Bind freeze avoided]
[Rebate unlocked on next Stephanie expenditure]
[Reward: Shadow Step (12 hour charge) — reduced presence on consumer cameras]
[Warning: Paul Hale suspicion index +18]
Logan stayed down until the gate closed. Then he walked.
His apartment smelled like old laundry and the life he had before the app. He locked the door, sat on the edge of the bed, and only then let his hands shake.
Stephanie was in that house with a husband who beat people in rooms where cameras conveniently failed. Logan had left a ring in a bowl like a joke. It did not feel like a joke now.
His phone buzzed again. Not the system. Brandon.
You up? Caroline keeps asking if you got home safe. She made extra food like you still live here. Also campus chat is feral. Evelyn posted a teaser. Didn’t play it. Didn’t want to.
Logan stared at the message until the letters stopped jumping.
He typed back.
I’m home. Tell your mom I ate. Do not open Evelyn’s teaser. I’ll handle it.
Three dots. Then Brandon:
Handle it how? You don’t even have a scholarship anymore.
Logan looked at the system balance from the starter kit and the money he had not touched like a coward.
He opened the rebate tab.
[Next expenditure on bound target Stephanie Hale will return 11x]
[Current liquid: $21,440]
[Student debts: CLEARED]
He did not spend yet. Spending without a plan was how poor men stayed poor with extra zeros.
He opened a private browser and searched the draft title the system had given him.
The Boy Who Broke a Marriage.
Evelyn’s account was still live. The teaser was a still frame. Stephanie’s office hallway. Logan’s shoulder. A timestamp that could be twisted. Caption already written in that sweet victim voice she used when she wanted strangers to draw blood for her.
Some men smile in your house while they ruin it. Full video at 6am. #Hydra #Truth
Comments were already stacking. Andrew had liked it. Of course he had.
Logan set an alarm for 4:00.
Then he called the one number he was not supposed to call yet.
Stephanie picked up on the second ring and did not say his name.
"You should not have done that with the ring," she whispered. Water ran in the background. A shower she could use as cover. "He saw it. He asked who I was having coffee with. I told him Hydra legal. He did not believe me."
"Did he touch you?"
A pause that lasted too long.
"Not yet. He is in the study with a bottle. Logan. Evelyn sent him the teaser. He is going to use it in the morning."
Logan closed his eyes.
"I will kill that video before six."
"How?"
"You do not need the how. You need to stay in a room with a lock if he starts drinking heavier."
Stephanie’s breath broke on the line.
"I can still feel you," she said, so quiet it barely existed. "That is the worst part. He is down the hall and I can still feel you."
The call cut.
Logan sat in the dark with a hard-on he hated and a clock that did not care.
At 3:57 the system chimed by itself.
[Optional chain mission available]
[1. Kill Evelyn’s 6:00 release]
[2. Turn the narrative onto Andrew Hale]
[3. Spend on Stephanie before sunrise to trigger first major rebate]
[Accept all / Accept one / Decline]
Logan accepted all three before the screen finished sliding.
Peak revenge did not start at a polite hour.
