Chapter 58: Six o clock is a curfew
Four in the morning in Logan’s apartment looked like a war table made of a cracked desk and a phone.
He started with money because the system respected money more than speeches.
Stephanie’s favorite florist opened early for hotel contracts. Logan put two hundred on a closed card order. No roses. That was cheap movie language. He sent white ranunculus and a plain card with four words.
Lock the study door.
The payment cleared.
[Expenditure on bound target: $200]
[Rebate processing... 11x]
[Rebate received: $2,200]
[Funds deposited to host account ending 4419]
Two minutes. Two thousand two hundred dollars for flowers Paul would never understand. Logan did not smile. He rolled the two thousand two hundred straight into a same-day legal consult retainer under a shell name Brandon had joked about building and never built. Logan built it in twenty minutes because fear made him precise.
Then he opened the part of the night that actually mattered.
Evelyn’s teaser sat on a public platform with a scheduled full upload. Scheduled meant a server. A server meant a window.
He did not hack. He was not a wizard. He used what the last two weeks had already given him.
Hydra’s internal complaint archive still recognized the guest token Stephanie had issued him when she asked him to help clear her name. The token was supposed to be dead. It was not. Charles had been sloppy when he tried to bury files, and sloppy men left doors standing open.
Logan dropped three things into a folder marked MEDIA_RESPONSE:
The original uncut hallway clip that showed Evelyn and Andrew kissing in Stephanie’s office building two months before anyone called Logan a homewrecker.
A transfer record from Andrew’s personal account into a burner that had paid a campus page to boost the first smear.
A voice note Andrew had sent Evelyn after the party. Logan had not even been looking for it. It had been sitting in a shared cloud Evelyn never revoked from an old couple’s album. Andrew’s voice, lazy and pleased.
"If my mother loses Hydra, Dad buys it cheaper. You keep the victim story. Logan keeps the bruises. We look clean."
Logan watched the waveform like it was a loaded gun.
He did not post it to the world. That was how amateurs got sued and buried. He sent it to four places only.
Hydra media counsel.
The platform’s priority abuse desk, using Stephanie’s prior takedown case number.
Brandon, with the line do not share, just hold.
Evelyn herself.
The message to Evelyn was one sentence.
Release that video and this one follows you into every room you walk into for the rest of your life.
He hit send at 5:12.
At 5:18 Evelyn called him from a number she had blocked him on.
He let it ring twice and picked up.
"You do not get to threaten me," she said. Her voice had the shake she used when she wanted a man to feel cruel. "That clip is private."
"So was the video Andrew sent me of you riding him. You still sent it."
Silence.
"Take the six o’clock down," Logan said. "You have forty minutes. If it goes live I do not warn you again."
"Andrew will destroy you."
"Andrew used me to reach Brandon and used you to reach a board vote. You are not a wife in that plan. You are furniture that talks."
She hung up.
At 5:41 the teaser disappeared.
At 5:43 a new post appeared on her backup.
Some people fake documents because they cannot handle a woman leaving them. Logan is not done embarrassing himself.
No video.
[Mission 1 complete]
[Evelyn release interrupted]
[Andrew suspicion index +9]
[Evelyn hostility +22]
[Reward: 1,500 system coins]
[New item in shop: Clean Alibi — 800 coins]
Logan bought Clean Alibi without blinking. The description was simple. For six hours, consumer-grade location pings would place him at his apartment even if he was not there.
He looked at the time. 5:52.
Mission 2 was still open. Turn the narrative onto Andrew.
Logan forwarded the voice note to one more person.
Paul Hale.
Not with a speech. With Andrew’s own words and a timestamp.
If that man wanted to drink in a study and hunt his wife, he could start with his son.
Logan stood up, pulled on a jacket, and left the apartment while the alibi pin still showed him in bed.
Caroline had cooked extra food like he still lived there.
He was about to make that problem bigger.
Caroline opened the door in a wrap dress that had no business being on a woman who claimed she only wanted to feed her son’s friend.
Morning light cut across the hall. She looked him up and down once, the way a person checks for blood.
"You did not sleep."
"I slept enough."
"That is a lie. Come in. Brandon is in the shower. He has an early lab."
The house smelled like pepper soup and ginger. Logan followed her to the kitchen because his feet already knew the path. Plates were waiting. Too much food for two men who ate like students.
Caroline set a bowl in front of him and did not sit.
"Stephanie called this house last night," she said.
Logan’s spoon stopped.
"She did not ask for Brandon. She asked if you had reached home. Then she hung up. I am not a foolish woman, Logan. I know what a voice sounds like when it has just been in a bed it should not be in."
He could have lied. The system liked clean lies. Caroline would not.
"Paul came back early," he said. "That is all you get for now."
Caroline’s mouth tightened. Jealousy sat on her face without permission and she hated that he could see it. She turned to the sink so she could speak to the window instead of him.
"You sat in this kitchen and put your hands on me while I washed plates. You let me think I was the one who had gotten under your skin. Then you go to that house and come back smelling like hotel soap and another woman’s panic."
"I did not come here to compare you."
"Then why did you come?"
Because the system had accepted three missions and one of them still needed a sunrise spend he had already made. Because Brandon was the only friend he had not set on fire. Because Caroline’s attraction number was already high enough that standing this close felt like touching a live wire through clothes.
"I came because you asked if I got home safe," he said. "And because Evelyn tried to drop a video at six. It is down. For now."
Caroline turned. The wrap dress had slipped a little at the chest. She did not fix it.
"Show me."
Logan handed her the phone. She read Evelyn’s backup post, then the blank space where a video should have been. Her shoulders lowered one inch.
"
