You are playing in a house with generals and oil boards," she said. "My son thinks you are just broke and lucky. I will not have Brandon standing in the blast when Paul decides someone has to pay."

"That is why I am here before Brandon finishes his shower. If anything lands on this address, you tell me first. Not him."

Caroline stepped closer. The counter edge pressed the back of his hip. She reached up and turned his face with two fingers, looking for marks, looking for the truth under the tired.

"Did you sleep with her last night?"

Logan did not look away.

"Yes."

The word changed the air. Caroline’s eyes went bright and angry and hungry in the same blink. Her hand stayed on his jaw.

"And you still walked into my kitchen."

"You cooked extra."

She almost slapped him. He saw the thought land and die. Instead she kissed him, hard, with the kind of mouth that wanted to punish him for telling the truth. Logan caught her waist and kissed her back because leaving her raw and unanswered was how you turned a jealous woman into an enemy.

The shower water cut off down the hall.

They broke apart. Caroline wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and started talking about salt like her pulse was not in her throat.

Brandon came in with wet hair and a grin that did not know the room he had entered.

"You actually came. Mom said you would flake."

"I don’t flake on food."

Brandon grabbed a plate and started eating standing up, already talking about lab partners and the campus chat.

"Evelyn’s teaser vanished. People are saying her account got struck again. Andrew is in the group acting like a lawyer. He said someone is framing his family. Logan, you need to stay off main campus today. They want a face to hang this on."

"I was planning on it."

Caroline set down a cup of tea she had not been asked for. Her fingers brushed Logan’s when he took it. The touch lasted a half second too long. Brandon did not see it. Logan did.

[Bind eligible]

[Bind now? Y/N]

The prompt sat at the bottom of his vision like a loaded yes.

Binding Caroline in Brandon’s kitchen while Brandon talked about lab reports was a kind of evil Logan could taste.

He selected N.

Not because he was good. Because binding her mid-jealousy without a plan would blow the one friendship he had left.

Caroline watched his face change and knew he had seen something she could not. She did not ask in front of her son.

Brandon’s phone rang. Andrew’s name. Brandon almost picked up from habit, then looked at Logan and rejected the call.

"I’m not doing that anymore," Brandon said. "He used both of us."

Logan’s chest did something inconvenient and warm.

Then Andrew texted Brandon anyway, and Brandon, against his own new rule, opened it because the preview already had a photo.

The photo was the fruit bowl in the Hale kitchen.

Stephanie’s wedding ring.

A coffee receipt.

Paul’s hand in the corner of the frame.

Caption from Andrew:

Your stray left souvenirs in my house. Dad is on his way to campus. If Logan is with you, hide him better.

Brandon’s face lost color.

Caroline took the phone out of his hand, read it, and looked at Logan like she was deciding whether to throw him out or pull him deeper into the house.

Outside, a car door shut too close to their street.

Nobody moved for a full second. Then Caroline did.

"Back room. Now. Brandon, plates in the sink. If anyone knocks you did not see Logan this morning."

Logan was already moving. The back room was Caroline’s sewing space, narrow, full of fabric and a window that faced the side fence. She pushed him in, shut the door, and the house put on a different face.

Brandon’s voice in the hall tried to sound casual and failed.

A knock. Not a polite one.

Logan stood behind the door with his palm on the wood and listened.

Paul Hale did not wait to be invited in like a guest. He waited like a man who had worn a uniform long enough to believe doors were a suggestion.

"Where is he?"

Brandon’s answer came thin. "Who?"

"Do not play slow with me, boy. Logan. The one leaving receipts in my kitchen like a dog marking a chair."

Caroline’s voice cut in, smooth and older than both of them.

"General Hale. You do not walk into my house raising your voice at my son. State your business or leave."

A pause. Paul had not expected spine from this doorway.

"Your house guest has been in my home. My wife is lying. My son has a photo. I want Logan’s mouth in front of me."

"Then call him," Caroline said. "You will not search my rooms."

Boots moved. A chair scraped. Paul was walking the front rooms anyway. Logan heard him stop near the kitchen, heard him breathe in like a man trying to smell last night on this morning.

The system flickered.

Logan looked at the side window. He could be gone in four seconds. Caroline would be left with a general in her hallway and a son who had just started growing a backbone.

He stayed.

Paul’s voice dropped.

"Andrew says Logan is sleeping with Stephanie. If I find that is true I will not use lawyers first."

"Andrew says a lot of things," Caroline answered. "Andrew also paid campus pages to smear a woman who signs his mother’s paychecks. If you want to hunt someone, start in your own bloodline."

Silence, ugly and complete.

Brandon must have frozen. Even Logan felt the line land.

Paul laughed once, no humor in it.

"You talk like a woman who has picked a side."

"I picked my house," Caroline said. "Get out of it."

Another stretch of quiet. Then the front door opened hard enough to hit the stopper.

A car started. It did not pull away immediately. Paul sat in it like a man deciding whether burning this address was worth the noise.

When the engine finally left the street, Logan opened the sewing room door.

Brandon was sitting on the floor with his back to the wall. He looked thirteen for a second, then angry.

"Is it true?" Brandon asked. "Are you sleeping with Andrew’s mom?"

Caroline did not save him from the question. She stood there and waited for the answer too.
