Logan could have used the alibi. He could have used the system. He looked at Brandon’s face and thought of the hall two years ago, the way Brandon had walked out after the beating and still come back to drag his body home.

"Yes," Logan said. "And Paul is going to try to make that your problem. I will not let it become your problem. That is the only promise I have that is worth anything this morning."

Brandon dragged both hands down his face.

"She is his mother, Logan."

"She is also a woman Paul uses like property and Andrew uses like a board chip. I am not asking you to clap. I am asking you not to hand me to him."

Brandon stared at the floorboards for a long time.

"I need a day," he said. "Do not come here tonight. I need a day to be your friend without wanting to hit you."

That was fair. It still cut.

Caroline walked Logan to the back gate herself. Once they were outside the sight line of the street she grabbed his shirt and pulled him close enough that her words only belonged to him.

You will bind me properly when this house is empty," she said. "Not as leftovers from Stephanie. As a choice. If you treat me like a side door I will become a problem Paul cannot reach."

Then she let him go.

[Caroline bind delayed by host]

[Caroline emotional state: possessive / protective / volatile]

[New risk: Caroline may act independently if host stays silent more than 48 hours]

Logan walked until the block changed. His phone buzzed with Stephanie’s name hidden under a florist contact.

He opened the study. He saw the ring. He heard Andrew. He did not hit me. He took my work laptop. Hydra emergency sitting at 11. If I walk in alone they will eat me.

Logan checked the time.

9:06.

He had less than two hours to walk a bound woman into a building her husband was trying to steal, with her son circulating a photo of a fruit bowl, and with Brandon asking for a day Logan did not have.

He hailed a ride and typed one line to Stephanie.

Do not walk in alone. I will be in the lobby at 10:40. Wear the ring. Let him watch you take it off in public for the right reason.

Hydra’s lobby was glass and quiet money. Men in better shoes than Logan’s pretended not to look at him and failed.

Stephanie stepped through the revolving door at 10:39. Navy suit. Hair clean. Makeup precise enough to hide a night that had wrecked her. The wedding ring was back on her hand. It looked like a lie wearing gold.

She did not hug him. She stopped at a polite distance that still made two receptionists glance over.

"You should not be here," she said under her breath.

"That is why I am here."

"Paul took the laptop with the raw board files. Charles is already upstairs. Andrew texted three members that I had a student in my house."

"Then we do not argue morality. We argue custody of documents."

Stephanie’s eyes flicked to his mouth and away, as if the memory had teeth.

They took the executive lift. In the closed box her perfume and last night tried to occupy the same air. Logan kept his hands visible. Cameras loved hands.

"Did you mean what you said when you left?" she asked, staring at the floor numbers.

"Which part?"

"That he does not own what you had."

"I meant all of it."

The lift opened on a floor that already smelled like a fight.

Alfred was there. So was Steven. So was Charles, standing too straight, like a man who had practiced innocence in a mirror. Crystalbel lingered near the wall with a folder and a bruise at the corner of her mouth that makeup had not fully covered. Logan filed that away.

The sitting was not a full board. It was worse. An emergency cluster that could leak a decision before the real vote.

Steven started talking about fiduciary risk and moral cloud. Charles produced photos. The fruit bowl. The receipt. A still of Logan in the Hale driveway from a week ago, cropped to look like last night.

Stephanie did not flinch. Logan had told her to wear the ring. She used it.

She stood, took the ring off in front of every person at that table, and set it on the glass like it was evidence she was done performing.

"My husband left this house for nine days and came back early to accuse me with a coffee receipt," she said. Her voice did not shake. "He also took a company laptop that does not belong to him. If this sitting is about my marriage, record that. If it is about Hydra, ask Charles why his media packet uses a photo Andrew Hale sent from a personal phone."

Charles opened his mouth. Alfred lifted two fingers and Charles shut it.

Logan slid a printed still onto the table. Not the sex. Not the night. Andrew’s transfer to the burner page. Dates. Amounts.

"That is the moral cloud," Logan said. "A board member’s son buying campus noise while the same family tries to knock the sitting director off her chair. You can fire me from a building I do not work in. You cannot pretend this packet is clean."

Steven stared at the transfer sheet like it had insulted his degree.

A junior counsel cleared his throat.

"We received a voice file this morning. Origin unconfirmed. It appears to be Andrew Hale."

The room went colder.

They did not play it out loud. They did not need to. Faces changed as the file moved from phone to phone. Crystalbel’s eyes widened, then narrowed, then found Logan like she was rewriting him from scam to weapon.

Alfred closed the folder.

"This sitting is adjourned until the full board can see an unredacted packet. Miss Hale retains operational control through Friday. Charles is on leave pending review. Any photo from a private kitchen is not company evidence unless counsel says it is."
