Chapter 61: Life in school
Paul had wanted a hanging. He got a delay.
Delay was not victory. Delay was oxygen.
They were almost out of the room when Andrew arrived late, flushed, phone still in his hand. He saw Stephanie first. Then Logan. Then the ring on the glass table where his mother had put it.
"You took it off here?" Andrew’s voice cracked into a laugh that wanted to be cruel and came out scared. "In front of them?"
Stephanie picked up her bag.
"I took it off because your father made it a company issue. Do not follow me into the lift."
Andrew stepped toward Logan anyway.
"I will bury you. I should have finished it at the party."
Logan looked at him and felt no poetry at all.
"You sent your father a voice note of your own plan, Andrew. Bury that first."
Andrew’s face drained.
In the lift, Stephanie’s composure lasted four floors. Then her hand found Logan’s sleeve and gripped until the fabric hurt.
"He is going to come home worse," she said.
"Then you do not go home."
"Where do I go? A hotel leaves a card trail. Caroline’s house is already burned for today."
Logan thought of Clean Alibi. Of the apartment that still smelled like cigarettes. Of a woman in a navy suit who had taken a ring off in a glass room because he told her to.
"My place," he said. "For daylight. We move you before dark."
Stephanie stared at him.
"If I walk into your apartment, there is no version of this where I am still only a mission."
Logan knew that.
The lift opened. Paul was standing in the lobby with two men who did not have visitor badges.
He had not gone to campus after all.
He had come here.
The two men with Paul were not Hydra security. Logan saw it in the way they stood. Weight on the balls of the feet. Eyes on exits. Hands empty and ready.
Stephanie’s fingers left Logan’s sleeve like the contact could get him shot.
Paul smiled with his mouth only.
"Board ran short," he said. "Good. Saves me a speech. Stephanie. Car. Now."
"I have work," she said.
"You have a husband."
Lobby audio would pick up the next thirty seconds if anyone in glass offices was paying attention. Logan stepped half a pace forward, not in front of her like a movie, just enough that Paul had to look at him.
"General. This is a private building. Those men need badges or they need the street."
Paul’s gaze moved over Logan the way a butcher moved over a thin animal.
"You left a receipt in my kitchen."
"I left coffee on a work morning. You left a company laptop in a private bag. We can compare manners later."
One of the men shifted. Stephanie spoke before the shift became a hand.
"Paul. If you put one finger on me in this lobby I will scream and this building will record it. You will not get Hydra from a viral clip of you dragging your wife across marble."
It landed. Paul was a violent man. He was not a stupid one in public.
His smile thinned.
"You want to play modern. Fine. You will come home tonight and we will play it private. Bring your student if you want. I would like to see what a loan rat looks like when there are no cameras."
He turned. The two men followed. Through the glass Logan watched them get into a dark car that did not belong to a ride app.
Stephanie’s knees wanted to go. She did not let them.
Alfred appeared at the mezzanine rail as if he had been watching the whole time, which he probably had.
"Miss Hale. I can put you in a company suite for forty-eight hours. No card in your name."
Stephanie looked at Logan. The offer was safer. The offer also put her under Hydra’s roof while Paul still had friends on the board.
"The suite," Logan said quietly. "Daylight in my place was a bad idea once he showed his men."
She nodded once. Relief and disappointment mixed in her face and she hated both.
Alfred’s assistant produced a key card already encoded. Professional. Fast. This company had hidden women before. That thought did not comfort anyone.
In the service corridor toward the executive apartments, Stephanie stopped walking.
"I need five minutes with you before I lock that door," she said. "If I go in alone right now I will start shaking and I will not stop."
Alfred’s assistant had the grace to take the corner.
Stephanie pushed Logan into a maintenance alcove that smelled like cleaner and warm pipes. She kissed him like the lobby had been a held breath. Her body pressed full against him, navy wool and the memory of last night still in her hips. Logan’s hands found her waist, then the underside of her breasts through the blouse, not to start a scene, to remind her she was still in a body that had chosen him.
"I took the ring off because you told me to," she whispered against his mouth. "Do you understand what that cost me in a room of men who already think a woman is a vote?"
"I understand."
"Then do not disappear into Caroline’s kitchen while I sit in a suite like a mistress Hydra is storing."
There it was. She knew. Of course she knew. Women like Stephanie did not miss the smell of another house on a man even when he washed.
"Caroline hid me from your husband this morning," Logan said. "That is the whole truth I am giving you in a hallway."
Stephanie’s eyes went sharp. Then tired. Then sharp again.
"Bind me in a way that is not only sex," she said. "Spend on me where Paul can see the result and cannot touch the source. If I am going to burn, I want the fire to buy me a life."

Logan already had the two thousand two hundred from flowers plus the original kit money.
"By tonight," he said.
She kissed him once more, bit his lower lip hard enough to threaten a mark, and took the key card.
The suite door closed.
Logan’s phone filled with system text.
