Chapter 62: It always going to be fine
Thirty-three thousand dollars landed while a janitor rolled a cart past him.
Logan stared at the balance and felt the book tilt.
Money was no longer theoretical. He could rent men with badges too.
He should have felt like a king.
Instead his phone showed a live pin he had not requested.
Andrew Hale.
Campus library.
Uploading.
And a second pin.
Evelyn Rose.
Same floor.
The campus library was the kind of quiet that made violence feel louder.
Logan went in through the side stack entrance because the main doors had too many student phones. Shadow Step still had charge. Cameras would see a blur they would blame on a cheap lens.
He found them on the third floor, glass study room C. Andrew sat with a laptop. Evelyn sat on the table with her legs off the side like the room was a content set. They were not kissing. They were working. That was worse.
Logan did not go in. He took the next room, lights off, and watched through the glass with a shelf at his shoulder.
Evelyn: "If the full video is dead we use stills. Stephanie in the lobby. Logan beside her. Caption it as proof she brought the boy to work."
Andrew: "Dad wants Logan at the house tonight. He said if Stephanie does not come home he will file a wellness check and let uniforms drag her out of wherever she is hiding."
Evelyn: "Wellness check is good. Looks like concern."
Andrew laughed under his breath.
"You really do think like a Rose."
Evelyn’s face flattened.
"Do not say my last name like you own it. Your father lost a sitting this morning because you talk on voice notes like an idiot."
Andrew’s smile died.
"Say that again."
"You heard me. Logan has your voice. You gave it to him because you needed to sound big."
Andrew stood so fast the chair hit the glass. For a second Logan thought he would hit her. He did not. He grabbed her wrist instead, tight, the same way he had grabbed Logan’s life for two years.
"You will post the stills. You will cry in the first three seconds. And you will remember who pulled you out of a relationship with a broke nobody."
Evelyn looked at the hand on her wrist. Something old and ugly moved through her eyes. Not regret. Calculation.
"Let go."
Andrew did, because even he knew a mark on Evelyn Rose’s skin was a different lawsuit than a mark on Logan.
Logan filmed the grab through a gap in the blinds. Ten seconds. Enough.
He sent the clip to Stephanie, to Alfred’s media counsel, and to himself.
Then he walked into study room C like he had a reservation.
Andrew actually flinched. That was the best thing Logan had seen all morning.
"Get out," Andrew said.
"You first. Wellness checks on a grown woman who just ran a board sitting is a cute idea. Do it. I will have counsel on the call before the first knock."
Evelyn stared at Logan as if he had changed clothes in front of her and become someone else.
"You were crying in a hall two weeks ago," she said.
"You were sitting on him in a video you sent me for fun. We all have hobbies."
Andrew came around the table. Close. Coffee breath and expensive anger.
"My father is going to fold you in half."
Logan looked past him at Evelyn.
"He grabbed you. I have it. You can stay in his war and hope he never does it on a day with worse lighting. Or you can take your stills and go be a victim against the actual hand on your wrist."
Evelyn’s throat moved.
Andrew heard the offer inside the sentence and turned on her.
"If you even think about it—"
"I am thinking about it," Evelyn said, and the surprise on Andrew’s face was almost worth the last two years.
She slid off the table, picked up her bag, and walked out of the glass room without looking back. Not redemption. Exit. Those were different animals. Logan would take the exit.
Andrew’s punch started honest. Logan’s body, upgraded, moved first. He caught the wrist, turned it, and put Andrew into the glass hard enough to rattle the frame. Not a hospital hit. A message.
"At the party you needed a crowd," Logan said into his ear. "In a library you need your father. Stop talking like you are either of those things."
He let go.
Andrew breathed like a man who had never been handled by someone he used to step on.
Logan left him there.
Outside the stacks, Evelyn was waiting by the emergency stair like she hated herself for it.
"I am not on your side," she said.
"Good. I do not collect sides. I collect clips."
"What do you want for the wrist video?"
"Kill the stills. Stay off Stephanie’s name for seventy-two hours. After that we talk about the old couple’s album you never wiped."
Evelyn laughed once, bitter.
"You really did become someone I would have dated if you had been this at the start."
"No," Logan said. "You dated a wallet with no teeth. Stay gone."
She left down the stairs.

Logan was halfway to the street when Brandon called.
"I said I needed a day."
"Then why are you calling?"
Brandon’s voice was wrong.
"Because Caroline packed a bag and left the house. She would not tell me where. She said if Paul came back she would not be the woman who hid in a sewing room twice. Logan. Where would my mother go?"
Logan closed his eyes.
He knew.
Suite 19B was in Stephanie’s new holding.
Caroline did not know that.
Caroline knew Hydra’s building. Caroline knew Logan had walked Stephanie out of a lobby. Caroline was jealous enough to walk straight into the one elevator that made this story explode.
He started running.
