Chapter 63: One day and two plans
Hydra’s executive floor after noon had the false calm of a hospital corridor.
Logan took the service lift because the lobby cameras had already eaten enough of his face for one day. Suite 19B sat at the end of a carpeted hall that smelled like new money trying to be discreet. He knocked once.
Stephanie opened in the same navy trousers and a blouse she had unbuttoned at the throat. She had been crying without ruining the makeup. That took practice.
"You bought this," she said. Not a question.
"The system bought it through me. Your name is on the holding. Paul can shout at a door he does not own."
She stepped aside. The suite was wide and impersonal. White couch. City glass. A bedroom door half open.
Logan did not get to close the front door behind him.
The lift chimed again.
Caroline came down the hall with a small overnight bag and the walk of a woman who had already decided she would not be sent home. She saw Stephanie in the doorway. She saw Logan inside the frame. She did not slow down.
"So this is where you store them," Caroline said.
Stephanie’s chin lifted.
"This is where I do not get dragged out of my own marriage by a wellness check. Who let you onto this floor?"
"A receptionist who likes my son’s friend more than she likes your husband’s reputation." Caroline looked at Logan. "You told me you would not treat me like a side door. Then you ran here."
Logan let both of them into the room because a hallway fight was how Paul got footage.
The door shut. The suite got smaller.
Stephanie spoke first, measured.
"I am not going to pretend I am innocent. I had him in my house last night. If you came to call me a whore, do it and leave. If you came because Paul scared you too, sit down."
Caroline set the bag on the floor with care, like she refused to look chaotic even now.
"I came because my son asked where I was going and I could not tell him I was hunting the boy he still defends. I also came because I am tired of being the kitchen woman who gets a kiss and a delay prompt."
Logan felt the system twitch at the word delay. It had shown her more than it should have. Or she was simply that sharp.
"Nobody is hunting anybody in this room," he said. "Paul filed a wellness inquiry. Andrew is bleeding from a library wall. Evelyn is quiet for seventy-two hours. That is the map. You two standing on each other’s necks is the only way this map burns."
Stephanie laughed once, low.
"You talk like a man who thinks he can chair a meeting between the two women he is sleeping toward."
"I am not sleeping toward Caroline."
Caroline’s eyes flashed.
"Not yet. Say it properly."
The heat in the room was not only anger. It was last night still sitting on Stephanie’s skin and this morning’s kiss still sitting on Caroline’s mouth. Logan felt both like hands on his back.
Stephanie sat on the arm of the couch and looked Caroline over with the honesty of a woman who had spent years around other beautiful women in board corridors.
"You are Brandon’s mother."
"And you are Andrew’s," Caroline said. "We can keep saying sons at each other until a general knocks, or we can admit the sons are why we are both in danger."
That sentence changed the temperature.
Stephanie rubbed her thumb against the pale mark where the ring had been.
"Paul will come to this building before midnight. Alfred can stall the front. He cannot stall a man with off-book muscle forever."
"Then Logan does not leave us in a suite like two secrets," Caroline said. "He stays. He binds what he is going to bind. And if Paul comes, he finds a house that is not confused about who stands where."
Logan looked at them and understood the peak version of this Chapter was not a catfight that ended with one woman storming out. The peak version was two older women choosing the same ugly alliance because the men in their legal lives had already chosen violence.
"Stephanie is bound," he said. "Caroline is eligible. I will not do that ritual with Brandon one call away unless you both hear the terms."
"What terms?" Stephanie asked.
"No one uses the other as a knife in front of Paul or Andrew. No one feeds Brandon details that get him hit. If I spend, I spend in ways that pull you out, not ways that decorate me."
Caroline walked close enough that he had to see the pulse in her throat.
"Bind me then. In this room. With her watching if that is what keeps the knife in the drawer."
Stephanie’s mouth opened. Closed. Something jealous and practical fought behind her eyes.
She stood up.
"I am going into the bedroom for ten minutes," she said. "If I stay in here I will put my hands on someone and it will not be useful. When I come out, I want a plan for midnight, not a performance."
She left them the living room.
Caroline did not wait for the bedroom door to click before she pulled Logan’s mouth down to hers.
This kiss was not the kitchen. This one had hours of fear in it. Her body pressed him back into the closed front door. Logan’s hands found the wrap of her dress and the warm weight of her hips. Perverted Hands was off cooldown. He did not fire it like a cheap trick. He let one palm settle at the small of her back and let the skill wake only as heat, slow, enough to make her breath catch.
"Not on the floor," she whispered. "I am not a mess you hide from her with."
He walked her to the couch. She sat astride his lap, dress pushed up her thighs, and rolled against the hard line of him through his trousers until both of them had to stop or finish like teenagers.
[Bind sequence ready]
[Caroline Hale? No. Caroline Ward]
[Confirm bind: Y/N]
The bedroom door had not opened.
Logan looked at Caroline’s face, at the pride there, at the fear she would never name in front of Stephanie.
He selected Y.
The system sealed it with a warmth that ran from his palm into her spine. Caroline shuddered and hid the sound in his neck.
[Caroline bound]
[Starting multiplier: 4x]
[Warning: dual-bound household risk high]
[Brandon proximity penalty if he learns from a third party]
The bedroom door opened on the eight minute mark, not the ten.
Stephanie took in the dress, the positions, the look on Caroline’s face, and did not scream.
She walked to the minibar, poured water she did not drink, and spoke to the glass.
"Midnight plan. Now. Before I remember I have a husband who breaks doors."
