They sat like people drafting a will.

Logan at the table. Stephanie standing. Caroline on the couch with her dress fixed and her mouth still kiss-dark.

"Paul has two men without badges," Logan said. "He drinks with a campus-adjacent officer. Andrew wants a wellness check because it looks like love. The only clean counter is visibility that is not scandal."

Stephanie nodded.

"I call two board wives and one journalist who already hates Paul from an old land case. I am alive, I am working, I am in a company suite. A wellness check dies if a director answers her own phone on record."

"Do it now," Caroline said. "Not at eleven fifty."

Stephanie already had the phone out. The first call was crisp. The second had a laugh that was almost real. The third, the journalist, took longer. Stephanie gave no sex, no student, no fruit bowl. She gave a retired general removing a company laptop and arriving at headquarters with unmarked men.

When she hung up, some of the shake had left her hands.

"That buys the door," she said. "It does not buy the night."

Logan opened the shop.

[Available: Night Watch Contract — $4,500, eligible 11x through Stephanie / 4x through Caroline if split]

[Effect: two licensed close-protection officers, 12 hours, logged, legal]

He split the spend. Three thousand through Stephanie’s gift channel. Fifteen hundred through a grocery and transport bundle in Caroline’s name so Brandon, if he ever traced money, would see care for his mother and not a weapon.

Payments cleared.

[Stephanie rebate: $33,000]

[Caroline rebate: $6,000]

[Host liquid now: $88,000+]

The number was obscene. Logan kept his face still. Money that made you grin in front of frightened women was how you became Paul with better skin.

"Two officers in the hall," he said. "Logged with Hydra security so it does not look like I hired street boys."

Caroline watched him the way she watched a pot that might boil over.

"And where do you sleep?"

"Chair in this room. Not because I am noble. Because if I leave, Paul tests the door. If I take one of you into the bedroom and the other sits out here with a bag, I am building a bomb."

Stephanie’s laugh was tired.

"You already built it. You just have not lit it."

She crossed to him, took his face in both hands, and looked at Caroline while she did it.

"I am going to shower. I still have last night on me. I will not sit in a strategy meeting smelling like a bed he has not been invited to discuss."

The bathroom door closed. Water started.

Caroline stood.

"She is not wrong," she said. "You cannot keep stacking us like plates. Brandon asked for a day. I stole that day. When he finds me he will find this room. You need a story that is not we both chose you."

"What story do you want?"

"That I came to protect Stephanie because Paul came to my house. That you are the student who got caught in a rich family’s war. That any other truth waits until my son can hear it without breaking."

It was a good lie. It might even hold for a week.

Logan pulled her in and rested his forehead against hers.

"When he can hear it, I will not let him hear it from Andrew."

Caroline’s hands fisted in his shirt.

The shower ran on. The city went gold in the glass. Down on the street a dark car circled the block twice and did not park.

Logan’s phone showed a pin.

Paul Hale. Three minutes south and closing.

Then another message, not from the system.

Unknown number.

We see the suite. Send the boy out or we come up as maintenance.

Caroline read it over his shoulder and went still.

Stephanie came out of the bathroom in a robe, hair wet, face clean of the boardroom armor. She saw their expressions and understood before anyone spoke.

Logan typed back.

Maintenance needs a work order. Try the lobby.

He forwarded the threat to Alfred, to the newly bought officers, and to the journalist Stephanie had just fed.

Then he went to the door and looked through the peephole.

The hall was empty.

For now.

[Night Watch ETA: 11 minutes]

[Paul Hale distance: 400 meters]

[Recommendation: do not open the door for anyone without a Hydra badge and a name you can verify on a second device]

Stephanie came up behind Logan and pressed her damp body to his back, not for sex, for gravity.

"If they knock," she said, "I speak. You do not exist until the officers exist."

Caroline took the other side of the door, a household iron from the suite closet in her hand like a joke that was not a joke.

The knock came anyway.

Three polite taps.

A man’s voice, mild.

"Maintenance. Air handling. We had a ticket."

Logan did not open the door.

He watched the peephole.

The man wore a gray shirt. No Hydra badge. The second man stood just out of full view with his hand inside his jacket.

Stephanie’s phone rang in the same breath. Alfred.

"Do not open," Alfred said, no greeting. "My men are in the east stair. Thirty seconds."

Thirty seconds was a long time to listen to polite knocking.

The mild voice changed.

"Stephanie. Paul only wants a conversation. Send Logan and this ends gentle."

Stephanie leaned close to the wood.

"Tell my husband if he wants a conversation he can call the journalist who already has his car circling this block."

Silence.

Then the gray shirt moved, and the second man stepped fully into view, and Logan saw the shape under the jacket clearly enough to stop breathing like a civilian.

The east stair door slammed open down the hall.

Two Night Watch officers came in talking loud on purpose, badges out, phones recording, Hydra lanyards swinging.

The gray shirts turned into visitors who had the wrong floor.

They walked away without running, which was how professionals left a scene they would return to later.

Logan rested his head against the door and only then felt Stephanie’s hands shaking against his spine.

Caroline set the iron down.

"They will come back quieter," she said.

Logan knew.

His phone buzzed with a system line that did not feel like a reward.

[Paul Hale has shifted from public pressure to private extraction]

[New mission: survive the next 12 hours without a recorded assault]

[Failure condition: any bound target hospitalized or detained]

[Hidden clause unlocked: if both bound targets remain in the same locked room until dawn, multiplier fusion trial becomes available]

Multiplier fusion.

Both women in one room until dawn.

The system had just put a prize on the most dangerous configuration in the building.
