Chapter 407. Ungrateful little bastard

{Asher’s POV}

I allowed myself a subtle, knowing smile. Rex and Ifrit had successfully rescued Loona and the other captives—everything was unfolding according to plan.

I’d spent weeks studying my brother, Akira, and Josh, the high-ranking Shinigami syndicate Commanders. Through them, I learned that Saturdays were when the Shinigami were at their busiest. Forcing Mio to send the explicit video of Loona and me having sex to Josh was the catalyst; I knew a man like Josh wouldn’t let an insult like that slide. That was why I’d gifted Loona the enchanted necklace. Imbued with my own magic, it allowed my summons to track her location anywhere on the map.

I had initially assumed they would take her to some shady Shinigami stronghold for punishment. The reality was far crueler: they took her somewhere to join other people they’d kidnapped to use as test subjects.

Still, the Shinigami’s deep-seated ties to the police force were only as strong as their cover. Once the evidence was dragged into the plain light of day, even the corrupted officers wouldn’t be able to shield them. In one move, I had saved Loona, freed dozens of innocent civilians, and handed the uncorrupted police force everything they needed to put the Shinigami in cuffs. My goal was simple: bring the entire syndicate to its knees for their transgressions.

What I hadn’t anticipated, however, was the sequence of events about to unfold in the deep-level lab where my parents floated in glass containment tanks.

The elevator doors clicked shut, but the floor indicator remained dead. It wasn’t moving up or down. Before anyone could react, Zero pulled out a syringe and slammed the needle into his neck, depressing the plunger.

Almost instantly, his body convulsed. His muscles bulged, tightening and expanding into terrifying proportions.

"P-series, huh?" I muttered under my breath.

Zero slammed his fist into the glass tank holding the floating boy I presumed to be his son. The glass shattered into a cascade of water and shards. He caught the limp boy in his arms.

"What do you think you’re doing, Commander? You’ve broken protocol!" Akira yelled. Zero ignored him entirely.

The adjacent elevator doors slid open to reveal Karen, breathless and trembling. On the floor behind her lay the two guards assigned to transport her to the lab as a guinea pig; both were twitching, knocked out cold. A small electric taser sparked weakly in her hand.

Akira’s eyes widened, then narrowed into a glare. He realized the truth at the exact same moment I did.

The entire show Zero had put on earlier—beating Karen, spitting insults, calling her a whore—was an act. He didn’t hate her. He was staging their escape. When he had leaned in close to whisper to her, he had slipped her the weapon and the instructions.

A satisfied smile crossed Zero’s face as he looked at Karen. "I knew you could pull it off, my love" he said softly, rushing over to hand their mutating son to her.

She caught the boy, her arms shaking. Zero thrust a small glass bottle into her palm. "Those are the antidotes. Get out of here. We’ll meet outside this hellhole. Follow the instructions on the map!"

Karen’s expression was a mix of sheer terror and desperate relief. "Let’s go together! We promised we’d flee together—"

"Go! Now!" Zero barked, cut off by a violent, racking cough that sprayed blood across his hand. The serum was already eating him alive. "Reinforcements are coming! I’ll buy you time!"

The first elevator behind us chimed, and armed Shinigami soldiers began pouring into the hallway. Karen stepped backward into the front elevator doors, and the cabin shot upward, taking her away.

Zero stood alone—a towering giant of a man, fists clenched tight.

Akira burst into a dark, mocking laugh. "Oh, poor Zero. You pathetic mistake of a man." He shook his head with exaggerated pity. "You sacrificed everything for your pathetic little family. You relied on the P-series serum every time you got into a tight spot, didn’t you? And every time you were issued stabilizers... you never actually took the full dose, did you?"

Zero didn’t flinch as the soldiers fanned out, training their weapons on him.

Akira took a step forward, eyes gleaming. "I always found it curious that your recovery was always incomplete. You were hoarding the stabilizer pills, wasn’t it? Saving them piece by piece while the serum slowly rotted your insides. And the second you had enough to cure your darling son, you decided to betray the organization." He clicked his tongue softly. "Tsk, tsk, tsk... Big mistake, pal. Nobody leaves the Shinigami alive."

Zero’s face remained eerily calm. A faint smile touched his lips. "Leave it to Number Two to read me like an open book," he said, placing a hand over his chest. "But you’re wrong about one thing: Karen will escape. My plan is absolute. I’ve spent every second of my life building a way out for my family. And if I’m going down... I’m taking every single one of you with me."

Crimson veins began to glow violently beneath Zero’s skin, throbbing with raw energy.

"Boss, fall back!" one of the soldiers screamed, backing away in terror. "He’s triggering a full thermal overload—he’s going to self-destruct and blow this whole floor to hell!"

"Tsk... Kill him before he detonates!" Akira snapped. "It takes time for his core to heat up to critical mass! Open fire, now!"

Bang! Bang! Bang!

A rain of lead rained down on Zero at blinding speed. Sparks flew and thick smoke flooded the room as Akira’s laughter echoed from behind his meat-shield of soldiers.

"Care for a little bedtime story before you die, Zero?" Akira taunted, his voice dripping with malice. "Your sweet wife, Karen... god, she was such a desperate little bitch. She worked her fingers to the bone, bringing in perfectly balanced ledgers down to the exact cent, all because I told her a single missing penny would make the Shinigami kill your boy and cut off his treatments. And the best part? I made her drop to her knees and suck my dick just to ’cover’ fake expenses I manufactured. You should’ve seen the tears streaming down her face while she did it. But let’s be real—you already knew, didn’t you? You knew the money she handed over was never going toward an antidote. We were just bleeding her dry and pocketing the cash. That’s why you had to resort to stealing the stabilizers, wasn’t it?"

Akira paced back and forth while his men kept their fingers glued to their triggers. Listening to my brother talk like that made my stomach churn. He didn’t just sound like a villain; he sounded like a monster. I felt sick just sharing his bloodline.

"Well, here’s the final punchline!" Akira sneered. "Those stabilizers you stole? They won’t cure your kid. At best, they’ll freeze his mutation in place while he rots away, unconscious, until he dies in his sleep. No doctor on this planet can save him now!"

Akira paused, staring into the dense haze of gunsmoke. "Ah, look at me, rambling to a dead man who can’t even hear me."

As the volley of gunfire finally ceased, the smoke cleared, revealing Zero, entirely unharmed. Not a single bullet had grazed him. He stared at the shimmering barrier glowing faintly in front of his face, his eyes wide with shock.

"This shield... I’ve seen this before."

That was my cue. I deactivated my invisibility skill, stepping out of the shadows with a smirk. "You can recognize my wind barrier? Impressive, old man."

A vein throbbed on Zero’s forehead. "I’m not that old!"

I chuckled quietly.

Zero’s expression hardened as he locked eyes with me. "You’re the kid from the alleyway the other day... Why are you helping me?"

"Shhh," I raised a finger to my lips. "Don’t get the wrong idea. It’s not out of the goodness of my heart. I just couldn’t stand the sight of my brother’s punchable face."

That wasn’t the whole truth, of course. Deep down, I was gambling. Zero had been working on the P-series for years. If anyone knew how to reverse the damage done to these mutated test subjects... maybe he knew how to save my parents, too.

Akira’s jaw dropped, his face twisting in fury. "You! Asher?! My damn security guard! What the hell are you doing here?"

I shrugged, cracking my knuckles. "What does it look like? I’m here to kick your ass."

"Why, you ungrateful little bastard!" Akira roared, pointing a trembling finger at us. "Kill them both! LEAVE NOTHING LEFT!"

The guards racked their weapons and unleashed a fresh hail of gunfire.
