Chapter 408. No promises

The heavy thunder of automatic fire echoed off the reinforced concrete walls. Bullets flattened into metallic sparks, dropping harmlessly to the polished floor as my translucent wind barrier held firm.

"Damn it! What kind of sorcery are they using?!" one of the soldiers shrieked, fumbling to reload a empty magazine.

"The boy just appeared out of thin air... who knows what other paranormal stuff he can do!" another yelled, backing toward the shattered elevator doors.

"Keep firing!!" Akira roared, grabbing a soldier by the tactical vest and throwing him back into the line. "Let’s see how long they can hold on to whatever trick they’re pulling!"

Crap. He was right. Akira wasn’t a fool—he was testing my capacity. The wind barrier was burning through my system resources, and my PP pool was practically in the red.

I glanced over my shoulder at Zero, whose glowing skin was already pulsating with a terrifying, rhythmic hum. Thermal overload was still ticking down in his veins, but the sheer shock of my barrier had thrown him off his rhythm.

"I can’t hold my barrier much longer!" I yelled over the deafening clatter of lead hitting my shield. "Tell me, is there any hope to bring mutated people back to normal? Tell me what you know!"

Zero’s breath hitched, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth as the serum eroded his vitals. "There’s always hope, young man. You just have to find it... Stabilizing the mutation is the best we can do with raw P-series. However... I have contacts. A group working against the Shinigami who are actively developing a true reverse-reagent. But they need stable test subjects to finalize it..."

I cast a quick glance at the massive glass containment units suspended above the back platform. My parents floated inside, silent, pale, and bound by glowing life-support cables.

"And now you’re offering your own son to them?" I asked, keeping my gaze locked on the gunfire outside the barrier. "So they can use him as a test subject, too?"

Zero gulped hard, his chest heaving under the weight of his imminent collapse. "It’s a tough choice. But it’s the only door that leads to a hopeful future... So yeah. That’s about it."

My mind raced. Should I take my parents with me right now? Or leave them locked in these tanks, hoping I could hunt down Akira later once I secured the actual cure?

’If I leave them here... Akira will bleed them dry before I ever cross this threshold again.’

I cursed silently. I was running out of energy, and dragging two massive cryogenic tanks out of an underground stronghold mid-gunfight was physically impossible. I had to pivot—now.

"Zero," I said, my eyes darkening as I made my choice. "Cancel your thermal overload."

Zero blinked, stunned. "What? If I stop it now, the backlash will—"

"I said cancel it!" I snapped. "You’re not dying here, old man. Karen and your kid are waiting outside. And I need you alive to walk me to those contacts of yours."

"You don’t have the muscle to get us out of here, kid!" Zero growled, blood dripping from his lip. "Look at you—you’re pale! Your shield is flickering! Nobody truly escapes the Shinigami unless sacrifices are made. I’ve already offered myself as the price."

"I don’t need muscle," I whispered, a slow, dangerous grin spreading across my face as I locked eyes with my brother through the shimmering barrier.

I raised my voice, letting it echo off the concrete walls. "Dear brother... Akira. Remember me? Alex? Your younger brother who ’died’ two months ago?"

Akira frowned, his brow furrowing in disgust. "What sick joke are you trying to play, kid?! It’s not going to work!"

"Oh, it’s no joke. It’s really me. I came back from the dead—just in a different body." I took a step forward. "Want me to remind you of things only we’d know? Like when we visited Grandfather’s farm, and that stubborn ram flattened you because you tried to milk a ewe? Or how about how sickly you were as a kid, always hiding your fever just to look tough in front of your little brother? Or Hinata, your seventh-grade girlfriend, who dumped you because you never polished your shoes?"

Akira’s face drained of color. The sudden silence in the room was deafening as his enforcers lowered their weapons, staring at him in confusion. Beside me, Zero froze, his core’s blinding hum slowly dying down as he aborted the self-destruct sequence.

To drive the nail in, I spent a chunk of my remaining PP to force a temporary physical illusion. My height shifted, my skin pale and slightly softened, transformed into my former appearance: a man in a black suit, dark combed hair, and the slightly softer jawline Akira knew all too well.

Akira recoiled, stumbling back two paces. "No... It’s impossible..." he shrieked, his composure shattering.

Seeing someone you buried standing right in front of you is a nightmare—if I were in his shoes, I would’ve bolted out of the room entirely.

"This has to be a trick!" Akira screamed, trying to force his voice to stay steady. "Playing mind games won’t save you!"

"Tell me, Akira," I asked coldly, gesturing toward the floating bio-tanks behind us. "Why did you tell me our parents died and were burned to ashes in a car accident... when they’ve been floating right here this whole time?"

A wave of uneasy mutters broke out among the soldiers.

"Wait... is that true?"

"Are those really the boss’s parents?"

"He used his own family as test subjects?"

"Wh-what parents?!" Akira stammered, his eyes darting frantically away from his men. "Stop talking nonsense!"

"Stop lying, bro," I said, my voice dropping to a low, lethal murmur. "I was heartbroken thinking they were gone. But it seems even your own men didn’t know you were using our mother and father as guinea pigs. They didn’t realize what a monster you’d become. Why did you do it, Akira? Why them? Why join the Shinigami, my brother?"

"STOP CALLING ME YOUR BROTHER!" Akira roared. He violently ripped a rifle from the nearest soldier’s hands and held down the trigger, spraying lead wildly into the air.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

My wind barrier snapped into place, deflecting every round with a shower of sparks.

I clicked my tongue, glancing sideways at Zero. "Zero... break those containment seals and get my parents out of those tanks. I’ll maintain the shield. Head down the escape hatch Karen took. I’ll catch up."

Zero stared at me, his eyes wide with an unreadable emotion. "Are you really..." He bit his tongue, swallowing the rest of his question before giving a firm nod. "Got it. I’m on it!"

"Good." I turned back to face Akira, my transformation fading back to Asher as my eyes narrowed. "I’m not leaving until you spill everything, Akira. Every single detail. But first... let’s clean up your little pests, shall we?"

Akira paused, his gun clicking empty as he fumbled to reload. "What the hell are you! Go back to hell where you crawled from!"

I smiled softly, my shadow lengthening across the floor. "Ifrit... Rex. Clean up this trash."

"FINALLY!" Ifrit’s demonic voice boomed from the darkness beneath my feet. "Holding back inside your shadow was killing me, Master!"

The shadows tore open, spilling dark hellfire across the chamber as two figures stepped out.

"Remember, Ifrit, no killing! The Master commanded it!" Rex warned, his monstrous form towering over the terrified soldiers.

Ifrit’s sharp teeth glinted in the dim light as he cracked his knuckles. "Sure... but I make no promises!"
