Chapter 409. A shadow

{Flashback}

In an open field, a young Akira with dark, spiky hair tended to a small garden of cabbages, whistling a soft tune. Despite the scorching sun overhead and the fact that most local farmers had called it a day, Akira kept working. The gentle care with which he handled the crops made it obvious—the boy genuinely loved farming.

After a few hours, he picked up his hoe and headed home. Arriving at the yard, he found his younger brother, Alex, sitting on the porch, wiping his eyes. The moment Alex saw him coming, he quickly tried to pretend he was busy with something else.

Akira dropped his hoe and ran over. "You’ve been crying, haven’t you?"

Alex shook his head fast. "No!"

But Akira saw right through it. The tear tracks were still wet on his brother’s cheeks. "Tell me who did it!"

"It’s none of your business!"

Akira pressed, his voice rising. "I said tell me who did it!!"

Alex knew his brother. Once Akira got like this, he wasn’t going to let it go until blood was drawn.

He sighed softly. "Fine. It’s Romeo. He’s in grade four, bigger and stronger than us. Just... forget it—"

Before he could even finish his sentence, Akira dropped his things and sprinted like a madman toward Romeo’s house.

Two hours later, Akira stumbled back home with a swollen, purple black eye and dirt covering his clothes. Seeing Alex, he flashed a wide, bruised grin and held up a thumbs-up. "Taken care of. The big bastard was stubborn, but nothing a stone to the skull couldn’t fix." He winked, thoroughly pleased with himself.

Alex sighed, shaking his head. "You shouldn’t resort to violence for everything. Come here, let me clean your cuts."

"Hah! Violence? Are you kidding me?" Akira scoffed, sitting down heavily. "It’s a big brother’s job to protect the little one, not the other way around. Besides, it’s just a little bruise. Nothing to whine about!"

Even as he tried to act invincible, Alex could see right through the front. Akira was hurt, but his pride would never allow him to show weakness.

Their parents were simple, working-class people who put in grueling twelve-hour shifts every day just to keep food on the table. Most of the time, the boys were left on their own, only seeing their parents late at night or on weekends.

Despite the hardship, they were happy. Early on, Alex showed signs of exceptional intelligence, excelling effortlessly at school. Akira, on the other hand, was the street-smart wildcard, constantly getting dragged into neighborhood fights.

The comparisons began when they turned ten.

Neighbors praised Alex constantly—how brilliant he was, how polite, how he helped the elderly around the neighborhood. But when it came to Akira, they spoke only in hushed tones. Nobody ever noticed his good side. Nobody cared that he grew fresh vegetables to feed the entire household. He felt smaller and less appreciated with every passing year.

Yet, as the older brother, he held onto his duty: ’Protect Alex.’

That was... until they grew up.

When the time came for Alex to attend college, the family couldn’t afford the tuition. In desperation, their parents secretly sold off the small plot of farmland Akira had slaved over for years—the one thing in the world he truly loved and owned—without even consulting him.

When Akira confronted them, weeping with bitter rage, his father snapped: "Alex has a real future! What do you have? Street fights? Let your brother become somebody, and maybe one day he’ll pity you enough to throw you a bone!"

Those words shattered Akira to his core. They confirmed his deepest, darkest fear: in his parents’ eyes, he wasn’t a son. He was just an accessory to Alex’s life—a shadow.

Time moved on. The family kept scrambling to survive. Alex focused on his studies, while Akira, consumed by a desperate need to prove he could be the sole provider on his own terms, crossed paths with the Shinigami syndicate. They offered him easy money, street influence, and power.

But the Shinigami didn’t trust desperate men until they were irredeemable. To prove his loyalty, the Founder demanded a supreme sacrifice: "Sever your past. Give us what you hold most precious."

Akira couldn’t sacrifice Alex—Alex was his anchor, his grand justification for everything. So, he chose his parents. In his warped mind, it was poetic justice. They had treated him like worthless trash for years; now, he would turn them into the stepping stones for his rise.

He staged a horrific car crash, letting the vehicle detonate into an inferno to declare them burned to ashes, while secretly handing their bodies over to the Shinigami underground labs as living test subjects.

That was the night his meteoric rise in the syndicate began. It was also when Alex decided to become a doctor, funded entirely by Akira’s dirty money.

Akira had finally become the provider he had always dreamed of being.

(Present Day)

Akira glared up at Asher—the boy he had hired as a simple security guard, who was now standing before him claiming to be his deceased younger brother.

He looked at the terrifying demonic beasts standing at the boy’s side, and the cold, condescending look in Asher’s eyes—a look of soft pity that Akira recognized all too well.

Asher extended an open hand. "Stop this madness, big brother. It’s not too late. You can walk away from the Shinigami and help me free our parents. Give them back the lives you stole. Free everyone in these tanks. If you do that, you can finally lift this weight off your shoulders. You can live a normal life."

Akira gritted his teeth so hard he tasted copper in his mouth.

"There’s no mistaking it..." Akira spat, his voice trembling with dark fury. "You really are Alex! You haven’t changed at all! Even after dying and coming back from the grave, you’re still looking down on me! Still trying to save me! Still outshining me!"

"I’m offering you a second chance, brother," Asher said quietly. "Make things right and live, or keep down this path and face the consequences."

Akira let out a bitter, manic chuckle. "Oh, reality really is a bitch. They say don’t bite the hand that feeds you, but clearly, you never learned that lesson!" His voice rose to a scream. "I did everything for you! I lived my whole life for you! Even when everyone called me trash, a scumbag, a failure—I took it all so you could have a brighter future! I made deals with devils and put my life on the line for you! And you still look down on me?! You still see me as nothing but trash?!"

Asher stood unmoving, his gaze steady while Rex and Ifrit systematically tore through Akira’s remaining enforcers behind him, snapping their bones and slamming guards into the concrete walls.

Akira clutched his head, his fingers digging into his hair. "Stop looking at me like that! Stop treating me like I’m the one who needs saving! I was supposed to be the big brother! I bled for you! I fought for you! And all Mom and Dad ever did was bow down to your genius while treating me like dirt! You didn’t save me back then, Alex when you treated my bruises, you just made me feel invisible! I made myself invincible so you’d have to look at me!"

His eyes bloodshot, Akira stepped forward, shouting at the top of his lungs: "And even after you died, I made sure to take revenge for you! I made sure the bitch who betrayed you suffered every single day for what she did! And I don’t even get a single ’thank you’ from you?! Say it! I want to hear you say it with your own mouth! Say you’re proud of your big brother! Say you appreciate everything I sacrificed for you! Fucking praise me!!"

Asher’s eyes darkened, his expression turning ice-cold.

"Revenge for me, you say?" Asher asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "What did you do to Karen? I intended to settle that debt myself. But when I returned to this world, all I found was a broken, miserable woman. And that was all your doing, wasn’t it? What exactly did you do to her, Akira?!"
