Chapter 109: The Verdant Empress
She possessed the terrifying, predatory beauty of a pitcher plant. Her upper half was flawlessly humanoid, carved from smooth, pale-green bark. Her lower half exploded into a sprawling mass of thick roots that anchored deep into the chamber’s floor and walls, effectively binding her to the Monolith itself. A cascade of blossoming vines served as her hair, framing eyes that burned with ancient, emerald light.
Her glowing eyes tracked them with terrifying intelligence, and as she shifted, the entire chamber seemed to inhale with her.
She was the Tower.
Nathan drew Moonlight, the tension bleeding out of him, replaced by cold focus. "Standard formation. Mirko, Frost Golem—take the center. Elise, stay back and hit hard. Dillon, Cloudy—keep the air clear. Garrett, Red—flank and burn. Kuro—find me the throat."
Understood, Summoner.
The Empress slowly raised her arms and the chamber erupted.
It wasn’t a wild thrashing. It was a coordinated execution. Vines the thickness of tree trunks shot from the walls and ceiling, lashing toward them with the speed and precision of striking vipers.
"Hold the line! Don’t let her separate us!" Nathan shouted, [Hunter’s Insight] painting a chaotic web of incoming trajectories. "Mirko!"
Mirko’s [Impenetrable Fortress] exploded into a brilliant green barrier. The vines slammed into the shield like artillery shells, the sheer kinetic force cracking the stone beneath Mirko’s boots. "Hmph! You hit hard! But you lack focus! You are just throwing weeds!"
Beside her, the Frost Golem waded into the onslaught. It caught two massive, barbed tendrils in its crystalline hands, the screech of tearing wood echoing as it ripped them from the floor. Frost raced down the vines, freezing them brittle before the Golem shattered them into icy splinters.
Above, Thorned Raptors—twisted amalgamations of wood and razor-sharp leaves—dove from the canopy, their beaks dripping with toxic sap. Behind them drifted Blossom Wisps, silently leaking clouds of heavy, sleep-inducing pollen.
"Garrett! Burn the floor! Dillon, the sky!"
Garrett roared, charging alongside Red. Volcan slammed into the earth. KRAK-BOOM. The thermal pulse rushed outward in a wave of blistering heat, turning a cluster of lashing vines to ash and instantly incinerating a Wisp. Red rammed a Raptor out of the air, its fleece deflecting the razor-leaves before Garrett shattered the creature with a brutal [Impact Strike].
Dillon was a blur of steel. [Thunder Edge] flashed. Lightning arced through the canopy, slicing two Raptors clean in half. "Cloudy, fry the Wisps!"
Cloudy chained a stream of electricity through the air. The Wisps popped like static balloons, their pollen burning up before it could settle.
From the backline, Elise leveled Aurora’s Heart. [Glacial Lance] materialized, larger and denser than ever before, radiating absolute zero. She fired. The lance tore through the canopy of vines and buried itself deep into the Empress’s shoulder. CRACK. Ice violently expanded across the pale green bark. The Empress shrieked, her vines momentarily freezing in their tracks.
It was the opening Kuro needed. Slipping through the chaos via [Invisibility], the shadow-cat materialized directly behind the throne. [Blind] wrapped the Empress’s glowing eyes in suffocating darkness. As the boss thrashed, [Assassinate] triggered. Shink. Shink. Both daggers sank to the hilt in the Empress’s back.
Nathan didn’t hesitate. He pulled the bowstring taut, the Capacitor draining fast—twenty percent, fifteen, ten. The Leyline Ring hummed a high, frantic pitch. He released.
THWOOOM.
The [Focus Shot] tore through the air, punching a clean hole through the Empress’s chest. She staggered, her entire root system shuddering.
The Empress threw her head back and let out a sound like a forest being torn apart by a hurricane. The entire chamber violently quaked.
Before their eyes, the gaping wound in her chest began to knit together. Fresh bark surged over the damage. The ice on her shoulder shattered, pushed out by aggressive new growth. Green light flooded the room, racing through the veins in the walls and floor, pumping directly into her throne.
"She’s siphoning power from the Tower!" Elise yelled over the roar of the chamber. "We can’t out-damage her healing!"
Nathan’s [Hunter’s Insight] locked onto the blinding flow of mana. Every vein in the room converged on a single point directly behind the throne. "The central root pillar! Cut her off from the Monolith!"
"On it!" Dillon was already moving, relying entirely on Cloudy’s static bursts to clear a path through the rapidly regenerating vines. He closed the distance in a heartbeat, staring up at a pillar of ancient wood thick as a watchtower. [Thunder Edge] fell. KRAK-BOOM. Lightning scorched through the heavy bark, leaving a deep, smoldering gash. The pillar shuddered.
"Move!" Garrett bellowed, charging through the gap Dillon created. He vaulted off Red’s back, bringing Volcan down into the smoldering wound. The thermal pulse exploded inward, widening the crack. Blinding green light began to bleed from the fractured wood. The Empress screamed again, her movements turning frantic.
Elise followed up instantly. Another [Glacial Lance] slammed perfectly into the fissure. The ice violently expanded inside the ancient wood, freezing the pulsing veins and choking off the mana supply.
Mirko arrived last. It was her tenth [Unstoppable Force] strike. The kinetic energy of every blow she had blocked, every vine she had shattered, fed into the hammer. She swung.
The impact was deafening. The massive root pillar exploded into a shower of splinters and brilliant green light. The glow in the chamber immediately dimmed. The Empress’s wounds stopped closing.
She was Vulnerable now.
Desperate, the Empress ripped her remaining roots from the floor, pulling them tightly around herself. Layers of thick, ancient wood rapidly wrapped around her body, forming an impenetrable, glowing cocoon. The air pressure in the room shifted. The sickly-sweet smell of nectar turned overpowering. She was condensing everything into a final, chamber-wide spore detonation. If she finished, they were dead.
"Break it! Everything you have, right now!"
Mirko swung first, an [Aegis Strike] that sent a shockwave slamming into the shell. Elise’s magic followed, freezing a localized patch of the bark. Garrett brought Volcan down, shattering the frozen section and exposing the soft, glowing green core inside. Dillon dashed past, dragging [Thunder Edge] across the exposed gap, and Kuro dove in, sinking her daggers deep into the breach to widen the wound.
Nathan drew the string back. He held it for sixty excruciating seconds.
The Capacitor hit zero. The Leyline Ring screamed, hot against his skin. Moonlight’s arrowhead flared with blinding, silver-white intensity, the Tyrant’s Eye drawing in every scrap of ambient light. His ribs felt like they were splintering. Blood trailed from his nose and eyes as His vision narrowed to a tunnel, focusing solely on that violently pulsing green core inside the shattered shell.
Now, Master, Mirko’s voice echoed calmly in his mind.
Then he let go.
THWOOOOOOOOOM.
The arrow didn’t just fly; it erased the space between him and the throne. A blinding beam of silver light carved through the air, punched perfectly through the breach in the cocoon, and pierced the Empress’s heart. The light blasted out the back of the throne, scarring the stone wall behind it.
The Empress’s glowing eyes flickered. Once. Twice.
Her vines crashed heavily to the floor. The cocoon disintegrated into ash. The Verdant Empress collapsed, her body dissolving into a breathtaking storm of drifting petals and fading light.
[Ding! Verdant Empress Defeated!]
[Ding! Tower of the Verdant Monolith: Full Clear!]
[Overall Clear Rank: A]
[Level Up! Nathan Cross: Level 46]
[Level Up! Elise: Level 43]
[Reward: Empress’s Heartseed (Legendary Material)]
Nathan let Moonlight drop to his side. His arms were violently trembling. His mana reserves were entirely empty, leaving him feeling hollowed out, and every pull of oxygen felt like swallowing glass.
But he was standing. His team was standing.
"Four down," he managed to say, his voice rough. "Two to go."
Dillon smoothly sheathed his katana, the last of the ozone fading from his boots. "Drak’thar is right there. I can practically feel it."
"Pace yourself," Elise warned gently, letting the light of Aurora’s Heart fade entirely. "Two more Towers. And then the Court."
"And the Cleansing," Garrett added. The victory in the room instantly sobered. "Valerie said weeks. Maybe less. The clock is ticking."
Nathan stared at the exit portal now shimmering quietly at the edge of the ruined chamber. "Then we don’t waste time. We go home. We heal. And we climb again."
They stepped into the portal, leaving the Verdant Monolith behind to step out into the warm, late-afternoon sun of the capital’s southern district. Four Towers clear. The path to Drak’thar was getting shorter.
But deep in the city’s underbelly, Clamour was still waiting. And the Cleansing was inevitable.
