The Mawflower’s chamber finally fell quiet. The colossal plant-creature was already dissolving into drifting motes of pale green light, leaving nothing but the heavy scent of crushed foliage. Nathan slumped back against a thick root pillar, a healing potion uncorked in his hand and Moonlight resting heavily across his knees. The sharp, stabbing agony in his ribs had faded to a dull, relentless throb.

"You’re leaning left again." Elise stood over him, the soft luminescence of Aurora’s Heart casting a gentle glow across her exhausted features. The staff made her look almost ethereal in the dim light. "The potion helps, but it’s a patch, not a cure. You’re running on fumes."

"We all are," Nathan muttered, using the root pillar to push himself upright. His ribs flared in protest, but he forced his breathing to remain steady. "We don’t stop until this Tower is clear. Two floors left. Floor 4 will be environmental. Floor 5 is the Empress. We pace ourselves, we survive, we go home."

Garrett gave a slow nod. He was leaning heavily on Volcan, the mace’s molten veins pulsing with a steady, comforting heat. Beside him, Red shook out its wool, the thick armor plating softening back into fleece. "We’ve got this. Four Towers down after today. Only two left. We’re getting there."

Dillon, unable to stand still, bounced lightly on his heels. Residual lightning cracked and snapped around his Storm Striders, casting sharp blue shadows against the cavern walls. Cloudy spiraled lazily around his shoulders, her scales catching the light. "Let’s just finish it. I want to see how hard these boots can kick a boss."

Mirko shifted fluidly into her humanoid form, her tight suit armor gleaming despite the grime of battle. "Hmph! This Knight remains ready! The Empress will fall like the rest. Plants are just ambitious vegetables, and I am a master chef!"

You have never cooked a meal in your life, Kuro observed coolly from Nathan’s shoulder.

"I have! I prepared toast just last week with Lucy! It was slightly blackened, but structurally sound!"

Arson is not cooking.

"It is the first step of the culinary arts!"

Nathan let out a breath that was almost a laugh. "Floor 4. Let’s move."

Floor 4 was a suffocating realm of fungi and dead silence.

The cavernous chamber stretched out under a canopy of colossal mushroom caps, casting a sickly, bioluminescent pallor over the rotting floor. The air was thick and heavy, tasting of ancient decay. Clouds of yellow, green, and bruised-purple spores drifted lazily through the stalks, swirling like oil slicks in the air currents.

Nathan’s [Hunter’s Insight] flared, flooding his vision with warnings. "Toxins. Prolonged exposure means paralysis and hallucinations. We don’t stop moving."

Elise raised Aurora’s Heart. With a thrum of mana, [Mana Shield] snapped outward, curving into a shimmering, translucent bubble around the party. The toxic spores washed against the barrier and dissolved, unable to breach the magic. "It filters the air," Elise said, her voice strained. "But it burns mana. I can’t hold this and fight a protracted battle. Keep it fast."

"Then we sprint." Nathan glanced at his Capacitor. Forty percent. He had to be stingy. "Dillon, you’re point. Your speed is our best asset here. Find the safe paths. Cloudy, give him aerial cover."

"Gone." Dillon blurred into a streak of crackling ozone, his Storm Striders carrying him effortlessly through the fungal maze. Above him, Cloudy’s static discharges flared, illuminating the dense spore clouds like lightning in a hurricane. "Left is clear! Right is a death trap! Movement ahead—in the stalks!"

They emerged silently from the rot. Spore Walkers. Humanoid masses of compressed, rotting mycelium with nothing but hollow, glowing yellow eyes. They dragged themselves forward with an erratic, unnatural gait. The real danger wasn’t their claws—it was the swollen, pulsing sacks of spores woven into their chests. If they died close, they would burst, flooding Elise’s shield with concentrated toxins.

"Keep them at a distance!" Nathan barked. "Ranged only! Elise, freeze them solid!"

Elise didn’t hesitate. Aurora’s Heart blazed, channeling [Mana Bolts] modified by sheer cold. Ice violently encased three of the shuffling horrors. CRACK. They shattered into frozen, harmless chunks before they could detonate.

Dillon vanished, reappearing directly behind a Walker. [Quick Draw] flashed, severing its legs in a single, fluid motion. As the creature crumpled, Cloudy unleashed a static discharge, safely detonating its spore sacks away from the group. Garrett stepped up, sweeping Volcan in a wide arc. A thermal pulse roared from the mace, instantly incinerating the airborne spores into harmless ash.

Mirko and the Frost Golem became an unbreakable wall at the front. [Impenetrable Fortress] flared, blocking the shockwaves of bursting Walkers, while the Golem’s massive frozen fists crushed anything that got too close. In the periphery, Kuro was a ghost. She slipped through the shadows, her daggers finding the cores of the fungal creatures with surgical precision. Shink. Shink.

Nathan only fired when a Walker slipped past the perimeter. Thwip. Thwip. Each [Mana Arrow] found a glowing yellow eye. The Capacitor dipped to thirty percent.

As the last Walker crumbled, the dense spore clouds finally began to thin. Elise dropped the shield, gasping for air as the ambient mana faded. "Concentration is dropping. We’re through the worst."

[Floor 4 Cleared!]

Nathan pressed a hand to his side. The ache was sharp now, aggravated by the constant tension of drawing his bow. He was pushing his limits.

"Five minutes," he ordered, his voice leaving no room for argument. "Catch your breath. Then we face the Empress."

Floor 5 was the beating heart of the Monolith.

The circular chamber was magnificent and terrifying. Thick, flowering vines coated every inch of the walls, pulsing with bioluminescent veins that synced perfectly with a slow, heavy heartbeat echoing beneath the floor. The air was sickly sweet, heavy with nectar and rot.

At the center of the chamber sat the Verdant Empress upon a colossal throne woven from ancient roots. The twisted roots curled upward like the skeletal fingers of a giant hand, cradling her in a seat that looked less like a throne and more like the heart of the forest itself.
