Chapter 101: The Court’s Fangs
The plaza erupted into chaos.
Three massive summoning circles flared, throwing harsh, strobing purple light against the crumbling architecture. But the Tower’s oppressive gloom immediately fought back, suffocating the glow and muting the deafening roar of the arriving beasts into a heavy, muffled rumble.
Nathan’s [Hunter’s Insight] screamed with fresh data. The wireframe overlay painted the battlefield in chaotic layers, cutting through the acoustic and visual suppression.
To the left, the broad-shouldered operative marched forward, a dark steel mace in his grip. Rising behind him was the Iron Revenant—an eight-foot-tall monument of rusted torture cages and black iron, wielding a greatsword the size of a park bench. It moved with the grinding, terrible inevitability of a collapsing building.
Circling to the right flank was the cold-eyed woman. Slithering beside her, its midnight scales scraping loudly against the cobblestones, was the Shadow Basilisk. Its crimson eyes were already sweeping the plaza like searchlights. If that gaze locked onto any of them, their muscles would seize, paralysing and leaving them helpless.
At the rear, standing safely by the fountain of liquid shadow, was the scarred lead operative. He kept one hand firmly pressed against the pulsing black crystal affixed to the stone, while his other hand directed the Void Hound—a shifting, incorporeal nightmare of teeth and localized darkness.
"Mirko!" Nathan roared, his voice fighting the heavy air. "Take the Revenant! Elise, back her up with the Golem! lock it down! Kuro, the Basilisk is yours! gouge its eyes before it anchors us! Dillon, Garrett! flush the Hound and crush it!"
"Hmph!" Mirko stepped forward, her greatsword catching the purple light. [Impenetrable Fortress] ignited into a blinding green sphere. "A rusted Golem and its thug of a master! This knight shall send you both to the scrap heap!"
Acknowledged, Kuro’s voice slid through the mental link, perfectly calm amidst the adrenaline. She was already gone, [Invisibility] wrapping around her like a second skin. The serpent will not see me coming.
"Cloudy, light it up!" Dillon’s katana hissed as [Thunder Edge] flared to life. His summon spiraled off his shoulders, crackling with raw static. "Garrett, don’t let it phase!"
Garrett swung Volcan, the mace’s molten core pulsing angrily in the gloom. Beside him, Red’s wool hardened into thick, interlocking armored plates. "Just drive it toward the hammer!"
The Court operatives broke into a sprint. The Iron Revenant came down on Mirko like a falling meteor, its rusted greatsword swept in a horizontal arc designed to effortlessly cleave her in two. Mirko planted her boots and angled her Sword. CLANG.
Because of the Tower’s acoustic dampening, the sound was strangely muted, but the kinetic force was apocalyptic. The impact threw Mirko backward, her steel boots carving deep, smoking furrows into the ancient cobblestones. But she held the line. The green barrier violently rippled, then stabilized.
"You are large, but you lack technique!" Mirko snarled, pushing back against the massive blade.
Exploiting the clash, the broad-shouldered operative rushed Mirko’s exposed flank, swinging his mace in a brutal upward arc.
But Mirko had [Quick Reflex]. She read the shift in his hips before the weapon even moved. Slipping her shield, she ducked beneath the heavy iron mace, letting it sail harmlessly overhead. Her counter-stroke was a blur of silver, carving a deep, jagged line across the operative’s forearm. He cursed, stumbling backward.
Before the Revenant could recover its massive sword, the Frost Golem hit it like a freight train.
Nine feet of crystalline ice slammed into rusted iron. CRUNCH. The Golem locked its hands onto the Revenant’s arms, arresting its momentum. From the backline, Elise directed the construct with sharp, flawless sweeps of her staff.
"Keep it pinned!" Elise commanded. "The purple runes on its chest plating! that is the central power core!"
"Understood!" Mirko stepped in. She triggered [Aegis Strike]. The pent-up kinetic energy detonated. KRAK-BOOM, the shockwave slamming directly into the Revenant’s exposed chest. The rusted iron buckled inward. One of the purple runes shattered like glass, and the golem’s right arm immediately went limp.
Kuro moved through the void like a scalpel.
The Shadow Basilisk swept its paralyzing crimson gaze across the plaza, searching for the heat signatures of the party. But Kuro wasn’t emitting heat. She was a shadow within a shadow.
Dropping from the ruined architecture above, she materialized directly at the base of the serpent’s massive skull. She triggered her new evolution skill. [Blind].
A concentrated pulse of localized void magic erupted from her hands, wrapping around the Basilisk’s eyes like thick, suffocating bandages. The creature violently recoiled, letting out a deafening, panicked hiss as its optic nerves were completely severed. The paralyzing crimson glow instantly died.
"You!" the cold-eyed woman hissed. A wicked, curved blade snapped into her hand as she spun toward the assassin. She was incredibly fast, closing the distance in a heartbeat.
Shadow-forged steel met Court-crafted metal in a shower of sparks.
"Clamour warned us about you," the operative grunted, pressing her weight against Kuro’s locked daggers. "Said you were an E-Rank anomaly. So even He could make a mistake and misidentify a D-Rank."
His intelligence is outdated, Kuro replied coldly in her mind.
She parried the operative’s blade, spinning beneath her guard. [Assassinate] flared darkly. The operative twisted just in time, Kuro’s dagger tearing through the heavy fabric of her cloak instead of her throat.
Blinded and terrified, the Basilisk began to thrash, its massive tail sweeping blindly across the cobblestones, forcing both Kuro and the operative to break their clash to avoid being crushed.
From the far side of the plaza, Nathan saw the opening. THWIP.
His [Mana Arrow] streaked through the dark, threading the needle between the thrashing tail and the ruined pillars. It punched flawlessly into the soft tissue of the Basilisk’s unhinged, screaming mouth, detonating deep in its throat. The massive serpent convulsed, then collapsed, dissolving into heavy black smoke.
Without breaking her stride, Kuro utilized [Shadow Meld]. She sank directly into the Basilisk’s dissolving shadow and erupted instantly behind the female operative.
The woman tried to turn, but she was a fraction of a second too late.
SHINK-SHINK.
Both of Kuro’s daggers sank deep into the operative’s shoulders, severing the muscle clusters. The woman cried out, her curved blade clattering uselessly to the cobblestones as she dropped to her knees.
Kuro pulled the blades free, pressing one against the operative’s neck. "Yield."
The woman glared up at her, blood pouring down her cloak.
"No! The Court does not yield."
