Chapter 99: The Whispering Dark Tower (1)

The briefing room was dead quiet. The "TUFF GRANNY" mug was noticeably absent from Valerie’s desk, and that single missing detail told Nathan everything he needed to know about their next assignment.

"Tower of the Whispering Dark," Valerie said, sliding a thin, black-tabbed dossier across the table. "High Class. Seven floors. It’s located in a subterranean cavern system in the northern badlands. Two centuries ago, the Tower swallowed a buried pre-calamity city, turning it into a realm of absolute, magical darkness."

She leaned forward, her hands folded over the file. "I do not mean standard darkness, Cross. I mean a predatory suppression of the physical senses. Your light sources will work, but at a fraction of their normal output. More importantly, the atmosphere heavily distorts sound. Voices will be muffled, misdirected, or swallowed entirely. Communication is going to break down."

Her sharp eyes cut to Kuro, who rested quietly on Nathan’s shoulder. "Little shadow is the MVP for this clear. Her entire kit is biologically tuned for this environment. Nathan, your Insight will have to serve as the party’s eyes. The rest of you, stick together like glue and trust the callouts. If you get separated in there, you might not come back."

Nathan pulled the dossier closer. The notes from the few surviving Climbers were erratic, written in frantic scrawls: Like being buried alive. The bats sound like my wife. Couldn’t see my own hands.

Only one party had fully cleared it in the last five years.

"Expect Shadow Stalkers on the lower floors, humanoid constructs," Valerie continued. "Giant bats on the middle floors that mimic human voices to draw you into the dark. The boss on Floor 7. It’s a sensory deprivation gauntlet. You have two days to prep. Dismissed."

Walking out of the office, Nathan checked his wrist. The Mana Capacitor was fully charged, heavy with the ambient magic it had siphoned during their three-day break. The Leyline Ring thrummed steadily.

He was going to need every drop.

The journey north carried them far past the frozen highlands, into a bleak, heavily forested depression in the earth. The sky above seemed to naturally dim as they approached, the ancient, leafless trees leaning inward as if bowing to a terrible gravity.

At the dead center of the depression, a massive, yawning sinkhole opened into the earth. A spiral staircase of smooth black stone descended straight down into a suffocating, impenetrable black.

Old Marren brought the guild bus to a halt a hundred yards from the edge. He didn’t turn off the engine.

"Don’t like this one," Marren muttered, his leathery hands gripping the steering wheel tight. "Too quiet."

It was the most he had spoken in weeks, and the most ominous thing Nathan had ever heard the veteran driver say. Marren didn’t elaborate. He just stared at the pit.

Dillon stepped off the bus, walking to the edge of the sinkhole. He kicked a loose rock over the edge. They waited in silence. No sound of an impact ever came back up.

"He’s right," Dillon said, his usual cockiness completely absent. "I can’t hear the wind. I can’t hear the engine. It’s like the air is dead."

"The Tower’s influence is violently suppressing the ambient acoustics," Elise said, stepping up beside him. She tapped the butt of her staff against the stone. The crystal at its peak flared with pale blue light, but the glow was sickly, struggling to illuminate more than a three-foot radius. "The interior will be significantly worse."

Nathan drew Moonlight. "Tight formation. Kuro, you take point. Your senses are built for this. Guide us."

Understood, Summoner.

Kuro shifted, her new D-Rank humanoid form materializing seamlessly. Her charcoal bodysuit gleamed with faint silver threading, and the shadow-forged daggers in her hands looked impossibly dense. She didn’t just stand in the darkness; she seemed to command it. I will be your eyes.

"Hmph!" Mirko drew her greatsword, stepping firmly to the front. "And this Knight shall be your shield! Darkness is merely the absence of light, and I am exceptionally luminous!"

That is not scientifically accurate, Kuro noted.

"It is spiritually accurate! Which is the only metric that matters!"

"Let’s move," Nathan ordered, staring down into the abyss. "Stay in physical contact range. Do not drift."

They stepped onto the spiral staircase, and the Whispering Dark swallowed them whole.

---

Floor 1 was a sensory void.

The moment Nathan’s boots touched the ancient, crumbling cobblestones at the bottom of the stairs, the darkness pressed against his face like a physical, suffocating weight. His cloak’s luminescent runes flared, but the magical dark instantly drank the light, reducing it to a pathetic glimmer.

When Nathan spoke, his voice sounded as if he were underwater. "Lock formation. Touch the shoulder of the person in front of you."

He activated [Hunter’s Insight].

The world violently tore itself from the blackness, rendering the ruined, subterranean city in stark, wireframe thermal layers. Skeletal skyscrapers loomed overhead, their hollow windows staring down at the street like dead eyes.

Instantly, his overlay lit up with threat markers.

"Contacts," Nathan warned, his voice muffled by the heavy air. "Multiple. Coming from the buildings on both sides. They’re following us."

Shadow Stalkers. They didn’t step out of the alleyways; they detached from them. They were humanoid, but only barely, faceless silhouettes of shifting, living void that made absolutely zero sound against the cobblestones.

The vanguard struck without a single footstep. A Stalker lunged at Garrett from the blind flank, its arm morphing into a jagged, shadowy blade.

Garrett, operating purely on Nathan’s callout, didn’t even look. He pivoted, bringing Volcan’s heavy shaft up in a blind block. KRAK-BOOM. The mace’s thermal pulse triggered, the sudden burst of intense heat and orange light flash-vaporizing the Stalker’s arm. The creature recoiled, dissolving back into the gloom, but three more immediately took its place.

Kuro moved through the void like a shark in deep water.

With [Silent Step], she was indistinguishable from the environment. Utilizing [Shadow Meld], she sank into the street and erupted directly behind a flanking Stalker. Her new skill, [Blind], flared to life. A concentrated pulse of shadow magic wrapped around the creature’s featureless head, violently severing its mana-sensory perception.
