Chapter 1568 The Plot to Capture Her Heart

Chang Fei schemed and calculated, exhausting his mind to set up this kind of scenario.

From rock climbing to the mother lying sick in a hospital bed, the whole series of scenes linked together like a picture storybook, slowly pulling Yang Yan into it.

Chang Fei’s "mother" was riddled with a stubborn illness, her mind deteriorating, even her breathing maintained by a ventilator, and from time to time she’d be rushed into the emergency room when crises occurred.

Yang Yan’s heart suddenly softened to the extreme. She’d never really understood Chang Fei before; now she did, finally having a direct sense and understanding of him.

By the bedside, Chang Fei was washing his "mother’s" hands and face, saying things that would move any listener and bring tears to anyone who heard.

Yang Yan watched this scene from outside the glass window, and her heart fell right into it, full of sympathy and distress.

...

On the bench outside the hospital, Chang Fei and Yang Yan sat side by side.

"Will Auntie be able to recover?" Yang Yan asked naturally, everything coming about as a matter of course. Whether it was for an answer she didn’t really want to know, or to comfort Chang Fei, to make herself into a listener so he could pour his heart out, she had to say something. Under the sway of her conscience and overflowing sympathy, Yang Yan asked gently.

"The doctors say she won’t live more than three months. Keeping her alive like this is worse than letting her go. Watching my mother suffer day after day, grow thinner and thinner, tortured by the illness, it tears my heart to pieces." Chang Fei spoke with tears almost spilling out.

"I know that telling you to restrain your grief and go with the flow doesn’t help at all, but I still can’t help saying this: please try to see it differently. If Auntie really passes on, if her spirit lives on in heaven, she wouldn’t want to see you in pain forever. Every parent hopes only for their children to be well." Yang Yan said, comforting him with deep emotion.

"I understand the logic, but I just can’t accept it for now. Why is heaven so unfair, why is it that I don’t even get the chance to fulfill my filial duty? ’A son wishes to care, but his parents are gone’—there’s nothing more tragic in this world than that." Chang Fei vented hysterically.

In that moment, he was no longer that mature man, that gentlemanly guy, but seemed to turn from a tough man into someone cursing heaven’s injustice, a person with normal emotions.

Speaking with rising emotion, Chang Fei went on about his unwillingness and helplessness.

His mother had raised him, sold everything she could to put him through school, and just when his studies had finally borne fruit, his mother fell ill.

She changed from a normal person to an abnormal one, to the point that she didn’t even recognize her own son anymore.

As he talked, Chang Fei burst into tears, sobbing with snot and tears running down.

Yang Yan’s maternal feelings were completely stirred. Chang Fei was like a child, held in her arms as she comforted him gently and stroked him with care.

And under Yang Yan’s comforting, Chang Fei actually fell asleep like a lost little boy. Looking at the face in her arms, Yang Yan’s heart was filled with boundless tenderness, and the attitude she’d always had—avoiding his pursuit—quietly melted away without her noticing.

...

In a private booth at a restaurant, Chang Fei and Yang Yan sat across from each other.

Chang Fei had adjusted his emotions; apart from a faint sadness, he had once again become that mature, gentlemanly man.

Having seen Chang Fei’s weak side, Yang Yan now naturally understood what kind of heart lay beneath this steady exterior.

"Thank you for today. I’d planned to just go climbing with you, never expected so many things to happen. It’s a good thing you were by my side, or I wouldn’t have known what to do. All those things I’ve never told anyone before, I ended up dumping them all on you at once." Chang Fei said sincerely.

His implication was that he trusted Yang Yan unconditionally, that he liked Yang Yan, otherwise he wouldn’t have poured out all those secrets from the bottom of his heart that he didn’t even want to mention.

He was confessing his family situation to Yang Yan, and at the same time subtly making his feelings for her clear.

If he didn’t harbor feelings for her, he wouldn’t have said so much to Yang Yan.

"As a friend, comforting you as best I can is what I should do." Yang Yan thought for a moment and said this.

"Right, a friend. We’re friends." Chang Fei was wild with joy, as if Yang Yan had agreed to be his girlfriend—he was practically buzzing with excitement.

Because Yang Yan had never responded to his pursuit, those two words, "friend," defined a relationship and a reply that were far more intimate than before.

Of course Chang Fei knew that Yang Yan understood his feelings.

This subtle change in Yang Yan’s attitude and how she addressed him carried a lot of meaning.

It was only natural that Chang Fei was over the moon.

"Idiot." Yang Yan muttered inwardly, a faint strange feeling flickering deep in her heart.

"Let me toast you, to celebrate us becoming friends." Chang Fei raised his glass, smiling broadly.

Yang Yan picked up her glass and clinked it against his, then took a small sip.

Chang Fei happily drained his glass.

That meal, Chang Fei ate very happily, and Yang Yan also enjoyed herself.

When Yang Yan was about to leave, Chang Fei insisted on seeing her off, but Yang Yan firmly refused.

So Yang Yan left alone, and Chang Fei watched her go.

Only after Yang Yan disappeared completely from sight did his expression turn slightly dark as he cursed impatiently, "Fuck, acting is exhausting."

That’s right, it had all been an act.

He’d been acting the whole time, with one purpose: to capture Yang Yan’s heart.

For that, he’d gone to a lot of trouble, racking his brains.

Behind Chang Fei, a figure flashed, and a graceful, beautiful silhouette slowly approached.

She was Transforming Mouse.

"Why didn’t you go see that little beauty off?" Transforming Mouse asked, puzzled.

"The timing today is just right. I’m afraid if I rush it, it’ll backfire. Better to take it step by step, you can’t eat hot tofu in a hurry." Chang Fei’s patience was strong. In truth he was anxious, but being anxious wouldn’t help; he could only stick to being patient.

He paused, then added, "I believe right now Yang Yan is digesting today’s chain of events, hesitating and wavering between accepting me and rejecting me."

"I haven’t had any contact with Yang Yan, so I don’t know the situation. Since you say that, it proves you’ve already grasped Yang Yan’s weak spot, got a handle on this beauty’s character." Transforming Mouse said with a smile.

"I wouldn’t say I’ve completely mastered it, but at the very least I’ve got sixty to seventy percent of it." Chang Fei replied, full of confidence.

"So in that case, turning this silly woman Yang Yan into our chess piece is just around the corner?" Transforming Mouse’s eyes shone with expectation.

"There’s nothing I can’t accomplish once I step in personally. It just takes some effort. After all, Yang Yan isn’t stupid." Chang Fei mused.

"As long as we get it done, what harm is there in waiting a little?" Transforming Mouse let out a sly laugh.

"There’s one thing you must remember: that patient my mom is treating has to be handled perfectly. We can’t leave the slightest flaw." Chang Fei instructed.

"I know." Transforming Mouse nodded solemnly.
