Chapter 75: Dusty Catacombs
"Fine," the emerald nobleman spat bitterly turning on his heel to leave. "But when the Obsidian Kingdom marches on your gates do not expect my knights to bleed for your pride."
He stormed out of the war room with Lady Isolde trailing closely behind him.
The Patriarch let out a weary sigh and turned his glowing golden eyes toward Beatrice who had been standing silently near the back wall recording the meeting notes.
"The Syndicate will strike again before the week is over," the elderly warlord noted grimly. "Beatrice I need you to descend into the ancestral catacombs and retrieve the Imperial Ward Key. We must lock down the estateโs magical grid to prevent another spatial breach. Take Leon with you. The lower vaults are heavily trapped and I trust his unique durability to see you safely through the dark."
The heavy mahogany doors of the war room clicked shut behind Leon as he stepped out into the opulent polished corridor. He hoisted the massive star iron greatsword resting the colossal dark metal comfortably over his broad shoulder.
His mind was actively processing the terrifying reality of foreign kingdoms and imminent naval invasions but his immediate focus was securely locked on the highly anticipated mission into the ancestral catacombs.
"You are treading on incredibly thin ice servant," a sharp haughty voice called out from the shadows near a marble pillar.
Leon paused and turned his head.
Lady Isolde Vane stepped into the warm light of the runic lamps her piercing green eyes narrowed into fierce slits.
Her fiery red braid rested over her polished emerald breastplate and she stood with her chin tilted high projecting a flawless mask of aristocratic superiority.
She had intentionally lingered behind her father to confront the man who had publicly shattered her pride.
"You may have fooled Lord Sterling into believing you are a tactical genius," Isolde hissed softly pacing slowly toward him. "But I know exactly what you are. You are a magicless brute relying on cheap tricks and stolen strength. When the true war begins your primitive brawling will get you slaughtered."
Leon did not wait for the system to prompt him.
He found the arrogant redhead incredibly annoying but undeniably gorgeous and he decided it was time to teach her a lesson in raw physical gravity.
He utilized a fraction of his staggering two hundred and fifteen points of Agility to blur forward. Before Isolde could even register his movement or reach for her rapier he stepped directly into her personal space.
He raised his free hand and firmly grabbed her delicate chin tilting her beautiful face upward so her wide emerald eyes were forced to meet his dark magnetic gaze.
"You talk a lot for a woman who cannot even hold onto her own sword Isolde," Leon murmured in a deep resonant whisper that vibrated heavily against her skin.
He leaned down until his lips hovered mere millimeters from her ear enjoying the sudden frantic hitch in her breathing.
"If you want to survive the coming war I highly suggest you learn how to submit to a real man. Otherwise I might just have to tame you myself."
Isolde violently trembled as the sheer searing heat radiating from his tailored combat leathers melted her icy aristocratic facade.
Her heart hammered a frantic erratic rhythm against her ribcage. She desperately wanted to slap his face and scream for her guards but her body betrayed her actively leaning into his firm dominant grip.
Leon released her chin with a smooth motion offering a charming wicked smirk before turning his back on her and walking casually down the hallway.
He left the fierce emerald knight standing frozen near the marble pillar a furious dark blush consuming her cheeks as she grappled with the highly terrifying realization that she did nothing.
He navigated the winding upper corridors and eventually found Beatrice standing near the heavy iron grated door leading to the subterranean vaults.
The Head Maid looked incredibly stressed.
Her usually pristine black and white uniform was slightly rumpled and a few stray strands of silver hair had escaped her strict bun framing her beautiful face in a highly chaotic manner.
"You took your time Leon," Beatrice noted briskly fiercely adjusting her wire rimmed glasses in a transparent attempt to hide the nervous flutter in her stomach.
"The ancestral catacombs are highly unstable following the Syndicate siege. The residual dark magic has agitated the ancient defensive runes. We must retrieve the Imperial Ward Key quickly."
"I am right behind you Lady Beatrice," Leon replied smoothly projecting his heavy magnetic Charisma to ease her frantic nerves.
Beatrice produced an intricate heavy brass key and unlocked the iron grate. She grabbed a glowing runic torch from a nearby sconce and led the way down the spiraling stone staircase into the deep underground darkness.
The air grew significantly colder the further they descended. The damp stone walls were covered in patches of glowing blue moss that cast long eerie shadows across the ancient steps.
The catacombs served as the final resting place for generations of Sterling warlords housing centuries of concentrated magical energy that made the atmosphere feel thick and highly suffocating.
They reached the bottom of the staircase and stepped into a sprawling cavernous hallway lined with towering stone sarcophagi.
Beatrice walked briskly down the central aisle her icy blue eyes meticulously scanning the floor for hidden magical tripwires.
"The Ward Key is kept in the deepest chamber," she explained softly her breath pluming in the freezing air. She rubbed her arms shivering slightly as the unnatural cold seeped through her uniform.
"It is an ancient artifact granted by the first Emperor. It will erect a kinetic barrier over the entire estate effectively locking out any foreign spatial portals."
Leon kept pace directly behind her watching the elegant sway of her hips with intense predatory focus. He could clearly sense her rising anxiety.
The heavy burden of managing the estateโs defenses while preparing for an international war was actively crushing her strict professional discipline.
She desperately needed an outlet to release her pent up stress and Leon was more than happy to provide his highly durable body for the task.
"Watch your step," Beatrice warned suddenly stopping near a cracked section of the stone floor. "The runes here are highly erratic."
She carefully stepped over a glowing red sigil etched into the masonry but her leather heel caught on a jagged piece of rubble.
She lost her balance and stumbled forward letting out a sharp gasp as she pitched toward a deadly cluster of activated magical traps.
Leon smoothly swept his arm around her narrow waist.
He forcefully pulled her backward neutralizing her fall and spinning her securely into his solid muscular chest before her foot could touch the lethal runes.
