Chapter 74: War Room and the Empire Map
The heavy mahogany doors of the grand war room swung open to reveal a highly tense aristocratic standoff. Leon stepped over the threshold with the massive star iron greatsword strapped securely to his broad back.
He followed closely behind Seraphina and Commander Vance while his dark magnetic eyes quickly assessed the sprawling chamber.
The room was dominated by a massive circular stone table featuring a highly detailed magical projection of the known world illuminating the faces of the powerful figures gathered around it.
Standing on the far side of the glowing map was Lord Vane. The arrogant nobleman wore a highly ornate emerald tunic and glared across the table with a smug highly calculated sneer.
Lady Isolde stood diligently by his right shoulder her piercing green eyes locking onto Leon the moment he entered.
A vivid red flush rapidly crept up her pale neck as the humiliating memory of her barehanded disarmament flooded her haughty mind.
The Patriarch of House Sterling sat at the head of the table radiating a warm majestic golden aura that kept the oppressive tension in the room from boiling over into physical violence.
"Your timing is impeccable Seraphina," the Patriarch stated smoothly gesturing for his daughter and her warden to join the council. "Lord Vane was just outlining his highly extortionate demands for continuing his logistical support."
"I am simply being a pragmatic leader Lord Sterling," Vane countered his voice dripping with aristocratic venom.
He slammed his fist onto the edge of the stone table.
"The Solarian Empire is on the brink of a massive civil war. The Emperor has grown weak and the Four Great Duchies are bleeding resources trying to secure the borders. You know as well as I do that the Eclipse Syndicate is not a mere mercenary band. They are officially backed by the Obsidian Kingdom of Vaeloria located just across the eastern sea."
Leon absorbed the political landscape being laid out before him.
He realized the brutal world he inhabited was vastly larger and significantly more dangerous than a simple collection of noble estates.
The Solarian Empire ruled the central continent divided into four massive territories governed by powerful Dukes. House Sterling and House Vane were two of these supreme ruling families locked in a perpetual cold war for imperial favor.
The revelation that the Syndicate assassins were actually funded by a hostile foreign kingdom elevated the current conflict from a minor border dispute to a full scale international war.
"Vaeloria intends to destabilize the eastern coast before launching a naval invasion," Lord Vane continued gesturing wildly at the glowing map.
"Your Vanguard is crippled. Your borders are highly porous. I am willing to station three legions of my emerald knights to defend your lands but in exchange I demand full control over the Ironridge Mines and the northern trade routes leading directly to the Imperial Capital."
Seraphina let out a harsh melodic laugh that dripped with pure disdain.
"You want us to surrender our most lucrative magical ore deposits and our direct line to the Emperor," the Silver Goddess mocked fiercely.
Her violet eyes blazed with a highly dangerous battle lust.
"That is less an alliance and more of an unconditional surrender. I would rather fight the Vaelorian army barehanded."
"Then you will die screaming in the mud little girl," Lord Vane hissed viciously.
Leon decided he had heard enough arrogant posturing from a man whose daughter could not even hold onto her own weapon. He did not wait for the pervert system to issue a quest or demand his participation.
His points of Charisma and his rugged dominant personality urged him to seize control of the narrative.
He unstrapped the colossal star iron greatsword from his back and casually slammed the heavy weapon point first directly into the stone floor.
The loud metallic crash echoed like a thunderclap instantly silencing the bickering nobles.
"You are playing a very transparent hand Lord Vane," Leon stated in a deep resonant tone that carried a heavy unyielding authority. He stepped up to the magical map and planted his hands on the edge of the table staring directly into the older man’s furious eyes.
"If House Sterling falls to a Vaelorian invasion your own eastern borders will be fully exposed within a week. You do not have the manpower to defend your emerald territories against a foreign kingdom while simultaneously suppressing the Syndicate. You need our Vanguard just as much as we need your supply lines."
Lord Vane turned a highly unflattering shade of purple.
He opened his mouth to scream at the impudent servant but the sheer intimidating gravity radiating from Leon’s heavily scarred muscular frame forced the words to die in his throat.
"He is incredibly arrogant but he is tactically flawless," the Patriarch chuckled softly resting his chin on his folded hands.
"My warden speaks the truth Vane. We form a united front against Vaeloria or we both perish. You will provide the medical supplies and we will retain the Ironridge Mines."
Isolde gripped the hilt of her rapier her knuckles turning white under the intense strain.
She glared at Leon feeling a highly confusing storm of deep hatred and a fierce undeniable attraction to his rugged fearless dominance.
She had never met a man who could casually verbally dismantle her father without shedding a single drop of sweat.
Lord Vane gritted his teeth and aggressively snatched his riding gloves from the table recognizing that his extortion attempt had officially failed.
"Fine," the emerald nobleman spat bitterly turning on his heel to leave. "But when the Obsidian Kingdom marches on your gates do not expect my knights to bleed for your pride."
He stormed out of the war room with Lady Isolde trailing closely behind him.
The Patriarch let out a weary sigh and turned his glowing golden eyes toward Beatrice who had been standing silently near the back wall recording the meeting notes.
"The Syndicate will strike again before the week is over," the elderly warlord noted grimly. "Beatrice I need you to descend into the ancestral catacombs and retrieve the Imperial Ward Key. We must lock down the estate’s magical grid to prevent another spatial breach. Take Leon with you. The lower vaults are heavily trapped and I trust his unique durability to see you safely through the dark."
