Chapter 258: WHAT GRIM SAID

Sponsored

Three days.

Three days since they had obtained F7 and Raven had left the seventh space without looking back.

Three days of camp a hundred meters from the Silent Threshold while the team processed what had happened, while Emily worked on F7’s corruption — which dropped more slowly than any other — while Seraph calculated the route back to Threshold Port.

Raven ate.

Not in the usual sense — in the sense that Raven, who normally took specific portions calculated to operate correctly, had been taking twice what she normally did for three days and looking at anyone who noticed with an expression that shut down any comment before it started.

Maya and Kira noticed on the first day.

They didn’t say anything.

Kira because Kira filed things away and waited for the right moment to process them. Maya because Maya had seen Raven’s hand on her stomach enough times to have a hypothesis she still didn’t want to confirm aloud.

---

[Day 71 — morning]

Alex looked for Grim after the morning training.

It wasn’t hard to find him — Grim had three usual positions in camp: Alex’s shoulder, the highest rock on the perimeter when he wanted to see the Threshold from a distance, and the edge of the fuel‑tablet fire when the team slept and Grim didn’t.

He was on the rock.

The crimson flames looked at the Silent Threshold a hundred meters away — the twelve‑meter walls visible from there, the symbol repeated in the black stone, the interior space where F7 had slept for eons and that was now empty.

Alex climbed onto the rock.

He sat beside Grim.

"You’ve been looking at it for three days," said Alex.

**"Three days since F7 is no longer there."** Grim. **"It’s different seeing it empty."**

"Do you miss being complete?"

**"It’s not exactly missing."** His flames. **"It’s that for eons that place was the core’s reference point. The place where the seventh part of what I am waited. And now it’s in you, and the place is empty."** A pause. **"It requires adjustment."**

Alex looked at him.

"Grim."

**"What."**

"Tell me about the shell."

---

Grim didn’t answer immediately.

The kind of silence he had when choosing his words more carefully than usual — not because the content was hard to say but because he wanted to say it exactly.

**"You already know the basic part,"** said Grim finally.

"I know I’m the shell. That when all seven are in the same bearer, the complete Harvester emerges using the form the shell gave it." Alex. "That the shell might not continue being what it is when that happens."

**"Yes."** Grim. **"That’s the basic part."**

"Is there more?"

**"There’s what the Threshold’s record didn’t fully say."** Grim. **"And what I know the record couldn’t say because the original Harvester didn’t know it with certainty."**

"What didn’t it know?"

**"What remains of the shell afterward."**

---

Alex waited.

**"The original Harvester described the possibility that the shell might not exist in its current form after the unification."** Grim. **"That’s what the record says. Possibility."** A pause. **"What the record doesn’t say is the other scenario."**

"What other scenario?"

**"That the shell exists."** Grim. **"Transformed. Not the same as it is now. But present."**

Alex processed that.

"The shell could survive the unification?"

**"The original Harvester wasn’t certain."** Grim. **"Because in the cycles before the sealing, the original Harvester never had a bearer. The Fragments were directly in him, without a human being in between."** His flames. **"What exists now — a bearer who carries the Fragments, who integrated them for months, whose will and whose memory are mixed with the Fragments’ channels — that is different from what the original Harvester experienced."**

"Different how?"

**"The original Harvester didn’t know if a bearer who reaches all seven could maintain something of themselves after unification."** Grim. **"Because there was never a bearer who reached all seven."**

"But you have a theory," said Alex.

**"Yes."**

"Which is?"

---

Grim looked at the Silent Threshold.

**"F7 makes being yourself easy to forget,"** said Grim. **"We saw it in the seventh space. The smile, the exploration, the three days of trance before Emily pulled you out."**

"Two days," corrected Alex. "The third I already controlled it."

**"The third you already controlled it."** Grim. **"Do you know why?"**

"Because Emily showed me."

**"Because you have reasons to be yourself,"** said Grim. **"F7 makes being yourself easy to forget when you don’t have concrete enough reasons to remember it."** His flames. **"With concrete reasons — you came back in a day."**

"And what does that have to do with whether the shell survives?"

**"That my theory —"** Grim took time, **"— is that what determines whether the shell exists after unification is exactly that. The reasons."**

Alex looked at him.

**"If when the moment of unification arrives the reasons are concrete enough — the people, not the purpose, but the specific people — there may be enough of Alex Carter in the complete Harvester’s channels for the shell not to disappear completely."**

"May be?"

**"May be."** Grim. **"I’m not certain. The original Harvester wasn’t either. No one got this far before to know."**

"And if the reasons aren’t enough?"

**"Then the shell breaks, and the complete Harvester exists without it."** His flames. **"And the next cycle has mortals with real free will. And Raven and Emily and the others continue to exist."**

"And you?"

**"I am the core. I exist either way."**

"Without me?"

Grim took longer to answer than at any previous point in the conversation.

**"The complete Harvester without the shell would be everything it was before the sealing. The power, the function, the presence on the plane between life and death."** His flames. **"And without the person who taught it that the chaos of a market has its own logic. Without the person who learned to coexist with three Fragments instead of just holding them. Without the person who gave the correct answer to the guardian by naming people instead of purposes."**

"Would you miss him?"

**"The complete Harvester doesn’t miss anything."** Grim. **"The core —"** a pause, **"— would."**

---

The Silent Threshold on the horizon.

The twelve‑meter walls. The symbol repeated thousands of times in the black stone. The empty interior space.

Alex looked at Grim’s crimson flames.

"You said the original Harvester’s instruction was that the decision belonged to the bearer," said Alex.

**"Yes."**

"And your theory about the reasons — you’re telling me so I can use it as part of the decision?"

**"I’m telling you because it’s true and because I promised to tell you before the seventh Fragment."** Grim. **"What you do with it is up to you."**

Alex nodded.

He held it for a moment.

"Grim."

**"What."**

"When that moment comes — when all seven are in the same bearer — what do you want?"

The crimson flames didn’t move.

**"For Alex Carter to still be Alex Carter."** Grim. **"And for the complete Harvester to exist too. Both things."**

"Is that possible?"

**"I don’t know."** His flames. **"But it’s what I want."**

---

[Afternoon — camp]

Raven found Grim on the rock when Alex came down.

She didn’t go to Alex — she went directly to Grim, with the posture of someone who had been postponing something for three days and could no longer keep doing so.

"I need to talk to you," said Raven.

**"I know."**

"How much do you know?"

**"Enough to have waited for you to come."** Grim. **"Sit down."**

Raven sat on the rock.

The crimson flames on her with the specific attention Grim had when something was important.

"I’m pregnant," said Raven.

**"Yes."**

"When did you know?"

**"The plane between life and death reads what is in transit toward existence."** Grim. **"Since before Threshold Port."**

Raven looked at him.

"And you didn’t say anything."

**"It wasn’t my information to tell."**

Raven processed that.

"I don’t want Alex to get the remaining Fragments." Her voice rough. Less anger. More weight. "I don’t want my child to grow up without a father. I don’t want—" she stopped. "I couldn’t find the right time to tell him."

**"Why not?"**

"Because I knew if I told him before F7 it might change his mind, and then I didn’t know what would happen with him when he got the Fragments and with the Reset—" Raven. "And if I told him after F7 we were already here and it was already too late to—"

**"It’s not too late."**

Raven looked at Grim.

**"F7 is in him. Three Fragments are still missing. Between today and the moment all seven are in the same bearer, there is time."** Grim. **"And what you just told me is exactly the kind of concrete reason that could change the outcome."**

"How?"

**"I just had the conversation I’d been putting off for months with Alex."** Grim. **"I explained that what determines whether the shell survives is the reasons. The concrete people, not the abstract purpose."** His flames. **"A child is the most concrete reason there is."**

Raven didn’t say anything for a moment.

"Do you think it changes anything?"

**"I think Alex needs to know — maybe."** Grim. **"Not to change the decision about the Reset — that’s his, and it’s valid. But because it’s information that belongs to him that you’ve been carrying alone."**

"And if I tell him and he still goes ahead?"

**"Then he goes ahead knowing."** Grim. **"What he can’t do is choose without knowing."**

Raven looked at the Silent Threshold.

**"Deep down —"** said Grim in a lower voice, **"— I also want Alex to stay Alex. I have the same motivation as you, even without a child involved."**

"Do you want that?" Raven looking at him. "Can you want something being what you are?"

**"I don’t know exactly."** His flames. **"But what I feel when I think about the complete Harvester without Alex Carter in it — I wouldn’t call it anything else."**

Raven looked at him for another second.

Then she climbed down from the rock.

"I’m going to talk to him."

**"Tonight,"** said Grim. **"When the team is asleep. It needs to be just the two of you."**

Raven nodded.

She walked toward the camp.

Grim watched her walk away.

The crimson flames with the stillness of something that had just done what it had to do without fully knowing if the result would be what it wanted — but having done it anyway because not doing it would have been not being the kind of thing Grim had become in months of existing alongside people who chose to be exactly what they were.

---

[Night — camp]

The team slept.

Kira, who always woke before everyone, was still asleep.

Maya with the map under her arm as always.

Jessica with her notebook closed for the first time in days.

Emily in the deep sleep of someone who had reached Purifying Light’s limit and needed to recover fully.

Seraph at the camp’s edge — asleep or not asleep, it was hard to tell with Seraph.

Raven went out toward the rock where Alex had been with Grim that afternoon.

Alex was already there.

Grim’s crimson flames on Alex’s shoulder gave one last pulse — recognition — and Grim climbed down to the camp floor.

He left them alone.
