Chapter 257: THE COST

Sponsored

The fourth point of light on Alex’s chest pulsed.

Just once.

And Alex smiled.

A different smile—carefree, of someone who had just discovered something with too many possibilities not to explore.

"Alex," said Seraph.

"Wait," said Alex.

He extended his right hand.

---

The F7 responded before Alex knew exactly what he was asking.

Not like the other three Fragments—the F1 required direction, the F4 required orientation, the F5 required specific intent. The F7 responded to will before the will fully formed. As if the Fragment anticipated what Alex was going to want and had it ready.

The reality around Alex’s hand changed.

Not dramatically—the texture of the air thirty centimeters from his palm losing the certainty of being air, the spiritual plane of the immediate space responding to the F7 with the same ease it responded during transfer, but this time directed, intentional, obeying.

Alex closed his fist.

The texture returned.

"Interesting," said Alex. With the same tone Jessica used to describe her experiments.

Seraph watched him.

**"Master—"** Grim began.

"One moment." Alex already extending his left hand.

---

The F5 and F7 simultaneously.

Domination and the memory of the previous cycle—will and the Fragment that responded to will before it formed.

The combination produced something neither produced separately.

The F1’s scythe appeared in Alex’s right hand—crimson, as always. But the blade had something different. The F4 active on the edge, the Veil reading the spiritual plane of the environment. The F5 holding direction. And the F7—

The F7 added to the blade the ability to cut what normally couldn’t be cut.

Not physical matter. The state of things.

Alex saw it with Soul Sight before he understood it in words: the F1 scythe’s edge with the F7 active could cut an object’s spiritual state instead of the object itself.

---

Seraph stepped within a pace of Alex.

"Alex."

"Wait, Seraph."

The F7 orienting toward Seraph before Alex finished the phrase.

Not with hostility.

Seraph’s spiritual state changed.

Where Seraph had been, there was now a firebird one meter tall with wings the same color as the F2’s flames—Seraph’s spiritual plane completely intact, but physical appearance responding to the F7.

The firebird where Seraph had been looked at Alex.

With exactly the same expression Seraph would have had.

"Fascinating," said Alex.

Jessica writing at maximum speed.

---

The firebird said nothing for three seconds.

Then the state reverted—Seraph back, without having moved a muscle in the process.

"Alex," said Seraph.

Alex with the smile. "I can change people’s states too. Temporary. Reversible." A pause. "The F7 does it almost by itself."

"Did you notice it do anything you didn’t want it to do?"

"So far it only does what I want."

"And if it wants something you don’t?"

Alex considered that for less than a second.

"It hasn’t happened."

"Yet," said Seraph.

Alex was already looking at Grim.

---

**"Master,"** said Grim with his crimson flames in the mode the team recognized as caution. **"Don’t—"**

The F7 oriented toward Grim.

Grim in his eighty-centimeter skeleton form with crimson flames—the spiritual signature of the original Reaper’s core, which the F7 had known since before the sealing, which the F7 had been alongside for eons in the seventh space.

Grim’s spiritual state responded to the F7 differently from Seraph.

Seraph was a human bearer of the F2—the F7 had changed her physical appearance while the spiritual plane remained intact.

Grim was the original Reaper’s core—when the F7 touched Grim’s spiritual state, what responded wasn’t appearance but nature.

The eighty-centimeter skeleton’s crimson flames expanded.

A version of the original Grim Reaper.

The team stepped back.

Not in panic.

Alex looking up.

The expanded version of Grim looking down with crimson flames that were the same Grim—but his current appearance was very different and terrifying to those who didn’t know him.

"Impressive," said Alex.

**"Enough,"** said the expanded version of Grim. His voice carrying spiritual weight multiplied by the scale. **"Revert it."**

Alex reverted it.

Grim back to eighty centimeters. The flames at their usual level.

**"Master."** Grim’s voice with something that in anyone else would have been controlled annoyance. **"The F7 is not a toy."**

"I know." Alex still with the smile. "But it works perfectly."

---

Emily watching from the perimeter.

The Purifying Light in reading mode—not healing, reading. Processing what Alex’s spiritual plane showed while the F7 responded to each exploration.

What the Purifying Light read:

The four active Fragments simultaneously. Not at thirty percent—no threshold, with the same complete openness of the transfer sustained continuously. The corruption of the F1, F4, and F5 at levels that should have cost to maintain.

But the F7’s corruption.

The F7’s corruption at eighty-nine percent.

And Alex not noticing.

Alex testing what else the F7 could do—not noticing the numbers.

Not noticing that the total corruption of the four Fragments combined made the Three Streams Pit’s levels look like a quiet day.

Emily left the Purifying Light in reading mode.

Activated it in offensive mode.

And walked toward the center of the seventh space.

---

"Alex."

"One moment, Emily, I’m—"

"Alex."

The same tone Emily had used exactly twice before—once in the Academy corridor when Alex had lost control of the F1, once during the Energy Storm when Alex had tried to tell her to stop. The tone that didn’t ask.

Alex looked at her.

The smile still present but with something different—the kind of presence someone has when you interrupt them in the middle of something they find completely absorbing.

"What?"

"How long have you had all four active?"

Alex looked at the four points of light.

"I don’t know exactly. Ten minutes?"

"Sixteen," said Emily. "And you haven’t checked the numbers."

"The numbers are fine."

"Did you check them?"

Alex checked them.

[F1 Corruption: 91.4%]

[F4 Corruption: 62.8%]

[F5 Corruption: 26.3%]

[F7 Corruption: 89%]

Alex looked at the numbers.

Processed them.

The smile disappeared.

---

The F7 still active, the four Fragments still open, but Alex looking at the numbers.

"Eighty-nine on the F7," said Alex.

"Yes."

"In sixteen minutes."

"Yes." Emily. "The F7’s corruption reached eighty-nine in the time it took you to test what you could do with it."

Alex processed that.

The F7 at eighty-nine percent corruption. The F1 at ninety-one after months of work. The F7 matching it in sixteen minutes without Alex feeling the cost.

"Why didn’t I feel it rise?"

"Because the F7 is different." Emily with the Purifying Light now active in healing mode. "The other three warn you when they rise—the pain, the pressure in the channel, the F1 pushing upward. The F7 doesn’t warn. The previous cycle’s memory makes using the F7 feel natural instead of costly." A pause. "Like remembering something instead of doing something."

"And remembering doesn’t hurt," said Alex.

"No." Emily. "But it costs you all the same."

---

Alex closed all four Fragments.

All four simultaneously.

The silence that followed was different from the silence before.

And Emily with the Purifying Light working actively—the F7’s corruption responding to healing more slowly than the other three’s. The F7 in passive healing yielding tenths that the other three yielded units.

"The F7 doesn’t respond to healing the same way," said Emily.

"Why?"

"The F7’s corruption doesn’t come from power use." Emily. "It comes from memory. And memory doesn’t heal with light."

"Then how does it go down?"

Emily assessed honestly.

"I don’t know yet."

---

Grim reached Alex’s side.

The crimson flames at their usual level—eighty centimeters, recognizable form, the version of Grim the team knew.

**"Are you alright?"**

"I think so." Alex looking at the fourth point of light—lower now that all four were closed, but present. "You?"

**"The core is fine."** Grim. **"What you did to my form—"**

"I’m sorry."

**"It wasn’t the worst possible outcome."** A pause. **"But don’t repeat it without warning."**

"Agreed."

Seraph from her position:

"What did the F7 feel like while you explored it?"

Alex thought about it.

"Like everything was possible and no possibility had real weight." A pause. "Like reading a book where everything can happen but nothing happens yet."

"And that’s dangerous?"

"It’s exactly dangerous." Alex. "Because when nothing has real weight, decisions don’t either."

"And now?" said Seraph. "Do decisions have weight?"

Alex looked at Emily—who still had the Purifying Light active, who had left the Silent Threshold annoyed and returned because it was necessary, and who had the Purifying Light at its limit after what had been the worst two hours of the arc.

"Yes." Alex. "Now they do."

"Are you still you?"

Seraph’s question direct, unadorned.

Alex looked at her.

"Yes." A pause. "But the F7 makes being me easier to forget than the other three."

**"That’s why the record,"** said Grim. **"That’s why the guardian’s condition. That’s why the transmission."** His flames. **"The original Reaper knew the F7 did this. Built everything before so the bearer would reach the F7 knowing who they were before the F7 told them they could be anything."**

The seventh space in silence.

"And if he forgets anyway?" said Jessica from the perimeter, her pen still for the first time in the Chapter.

**"That’s what the team is for,"** said Grim.

Emily lowered the Purifying Light—not because the healing was done, but because she’d reached the limit of what she could sustain without rest. The F7’s corruption at eighty-six. Three points in forty minutes of active healing.

"I need to rest," said Emily.

"I know." Alex. "Thank you."

Emily looked at him.

The expression she had when there was too much to say and the moment wasn’t right to say it.

"We’ll talk later," Emily repeated.

This time as a reminder, not a promise.
