Chapter 146: Foundations of the New Sovereign
Lyrielle finally caught up to them near a cluster of glowing anemones, her breath coming in ragged, bubble-filled gasps.
"Vince!" she scolded, her cheeks flushed bright pink as she fussily grabbed his wrist to check his pulse. Her green elven mana washed over his skin, probing his channels. "You complete idiot! You just integrated an ancient primordial core plus the battle against that ancient beast—your mana circuits could have ruptured! You are supposed to be resting, not playing around!"
"Relax, Long ears," Vetra chuckled, swimming up from behind and folding her arms over her chest. Her tail flicked lazily through the water as her sharp dragonkin eyes glinted with mischief. "You sure care a lot for a girl who isn’t officially bound to him. If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were looking for an excuse to keep your hands on him."
"I—I am performing a necessary medical inspection!" Lyrielle shot back, her pointed ears twitching wildly as her blush deepened to a violent crimson. "Someone has to be the responsible one!"
Vince smirked, casually raising his free hand. With a gentle flick of his fingers, he didn’t just push the water—he commanded it. The ambient hydro-mana coalesced instantly into a smooth, liquid platform that lifted Lyrielle gently off her feet, balancing her effortlessly in the current.
"See?" Vince said, his voice smooth and untroubled. "The Tide Core is perfectly obedient."
Nerissa watched the display, her golden eyes widening slightly. To master hydro-kinetic control so naturally, without a hint of strain, proved that the core hadn’t just been captured—it had submitted to him completely.
---
In the pitch-black abyss eleven thousand meters beneath the surface, time was measured not by sunlight, but by the relentless rhythm of labor and the soft, rhythmic pulsing of bioluminescent flora.
Days bled together in a grueling blur of reconstruction.
Vince, Nerissa, Vetra, and Lyrielle worked shoulder-to-shoulder with the surviving Siren populace. Where heavy basalt pillars had collapsed, Vince stepped in, his raw physical strength effortlessly hoisting mountain-sized blocks into place. With his newly unlocked water manipulation, he guided massive underwater currents to carve out open, sweeping aqueducts and fortified walls.
The old Nethros had been a hidden, paranoid cage designed to keep a creature of mass destruction. Together, Vince and Nerissa reshaped it into a grand, open aquatic citadel—a sprawling legacy of pearl stone, glowing coral reefs, and reinforced hydro-barriers built to withstand anything the abyss could throw at it.
By the time the final central archway was set, bone-deep exhaustion hung heavy over the camp.
Vetra yawned broadly, her sharp fangs glinting in the pale blue light of the surrounding sea-lamps. "I am done," she grunted, rubbing her eyes. "If anyone asks, I’m asleep for the next three days."
"Agreed," Lyrielle murmured, barely able to keep her eyes open as a pair of respectful Siren guards stepped forward to escort them to the newly constructed guest chambers. "Don’t do anything foolish while I’m sleeping, Vince."
As the guards led the exhausted pair away into the quiet halls, the grand plaza fell silent. The surrounding ocean currents shifted lazily, carrying the cold, salty scent of deep-sea kelp through the open stone arches.
Vince turned to the Siren General, who stood silently beside a carved balustrade, looking out over the glowing, reborn city. The faint blue ambient light reflected off her sapphire scales and the elegant curve of her body.
"Mind if I see your quarters, Nerissa," Vince said softly.
Nerissa’s golden eyes flicked to him, a sudden spark of tension rippling through her posture. She searched his face for a long moment, finding only calm, unyielding confidence. Without a word, she turned and led him down a private spiral staircase carved directly into the living pearl bedrock of the central citadel.
Her private quarters were breathtaking in their austere beauty.
A large, open archway overlooked the dark, endless abyss, where tiny bioluminescent jellyfish drifted like floating stars. The floor was covered in soft, white tide-sand, and gentle, heated hydro-currents circulated through the room, keeping the ocean water inside perfectly warm and soothing.
Nerissa stopped near the center of the chamber, dropping her trident onto a stone pedestal with a soft thud.
"It feels strange," Nerissa whispered, her back turned to him. "For fifty years, my entire existence was defined by duty. I was raised to be a weapon. A shield for a realm worth protecting. I never allowed myself to desire something outside of duty..."
Vince stepped forward, his boots sinking silently into the white sand. As he closed the distance, he intentionally activated [SEDUCTIVE AURA].
A subtle, suffocating heat flared from his body, radiating through the warm water currents of the room. The air—and the very water around them—seemed to thicken, heavy with a magnetic, predatory charm that commanded absolute attention.
Nerissa gasped softly, her shoulders shiver-tensing as the aura washed over her skin. She spun around to face him, her hand instinctively flying to her chest as her heart hammered against her ribs.
"Vince..." she breathed, her golden eyes clouding with an unfamiliar, dizzying heat. "What are you...?"
"You’ve fought long enough, Nerissa," Vince said, his voice dropping into a deep, velvety purr that resonated straight through her core.
He didn’t rush her. Step by step, he backed her across the soft sand until the back of her caudal fin hit the edge of her massive, pearl-framed bed.
Nerissa gritted her teeth, her proud warrior instincts screaming at her to maintain her guard. She placed a trembling, palm against his chest, trying to push him back. "Don’t mock me. I am the Commander of the Siren Vanguard protector and leader of Nethros. I am not some fragile surface girl you can simply charm into submission."
Vince smirked, grabbing her wrist gently and pinning it against the soft bed structure above her head. He leaned in close, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, sending a shudder straight down her spine.
"A Commander?" Vince whispered, his fingers tracing a slow, lingering line down her bare shoulder, dragging across the smooth, metallic edges of her sapphire scales. "Then command me to stop."
Nerissa’s breath hitched. She opened her mouth to speak, to assert her authority, but the words died in her throat as Vince’s thumb lightly brushed the sensitive curve of her throat, right where her gills fluttered rapidly against the warm water. Her body betrayed her, arching involuntarily into his touch.
"You can’t, can you?" Vince teased softly, his eyes glinting with ruthless, playful victory as he leaned down, hovering just millimeters from her lips. "Because underneath all that duty, you’ve got desires too."
Nerissa let out a shuddering sigh, her pride crumbling slowly under the overwhelming weight of his aura and his unyielding pursuit. Her free hand reached up, her fingers digging into his shoulders as she pulled him down to close the final distance.
A brilliant purple System interface flared brightly before Vince’s eyes, illuminating the dark, romantic waters of the chamber:
