My Taming System Makes Me Overpowered

Chapter 147: Salt and desire

The purple System interface faded into the dark water like dissolving ink, leaving only the soft blue glow of drifting jellyfish beyond the archway and the quiet pulse of heated currents through the chamber.

Vince did not claim the kiss she had invited.

Instead he hovered there, lips a breath from hers, letting the weight of the almost-touch stretch until Nerissa’s free hand clenched harder against his shoulder. A low, frustrated sound escaped her throat. The warm water between them carried the faint mineral tang of deep-sea pearl and the sharper salt of her own skin.

"You started this," she managed, voice rough. "Finish it."

"No." His thumb stroked once more across the fluttering edge of her gill, deliberate and slow. "You finish it."

Her golden eyes narrowed. Pride flared hot enough to cut through the haze of his aura. She twisted her wrist against his grip, not quite hard enough to break free, but enough to make the pearl frame of the bed creak. Her long caudal fin flexed beneath them, the powerful length of sapphire scales and translucent membrane shifting restlessly against the soft tide-sand, sending a small cloud of white grains swirling up into the current.

"I am not one of your surface conquests," she bit out. "I do not beg. I do not yield because some human decided to play with hydro-mana and a pretty smile."

Vince’s smirk only deepened. He released her wrist—but only so both of his hands could slide down the elegant line of her waist, fingertips mapping the exact place where smooth siren skin gave way to hard, overlapping scales. He felt the involuntary shiver that ran the full length of her tail.

"Then stop me," he murmured, and leaned in to press an open-mouthed kiss just beneath her jaw, where the water was warmest from her racing pulse. His tongue traced the sensitive seam of her gill slit; the taste of salt and something uniquely her bloomed across his tongue. Nerissa’s head tipped back against the bed with a sharp, bitten-off gasp.

Her trident still rested on its pedestal across the room. She could have summoned it with a thought. She did not.

Instead her hands—usually so precise in battle—scraped lightly down his back, tearing thin lines through the fabric of his shirt. The water around them stirred as her tail gave a stronger, restless sweep, brushing the inside of his thigh with the cool, muscular length of her caudal fin. The contact was accidental at first. The second time was not.

Vince caught that second brush and answered it by sliding one knee between the powerful coils of her lower body, pinning the midsection of her tail against the sand with careful, deliberate pressure. Not enough to hurt. Enough to remind her he was not moving unless she made him.

"Still waiting for that command, Commander," he said against her throat, voice low and amused. His free hand drifted lower, tracing the sensitive junction where her torso met the first broad plates of her fin. The scales there were thinner, warmer, and when his fingertips skimmed the edge she arched hard enough to lift both of them a few inches off the bed before the current settled them again.

Nerissa’s breath came faster, each exhale a stream of fine bubbles that rose and vanished into the dim blue light. "You... are insufferable."

"And you are shaking."

She tried to glare. The expression collapsed when he rolled his hips once, slow and controlled, letting her feel the hard line of him through the water and the thin barrier of clothing. Her claws dug deeper. A soft, involuntary trill—half warning, half something far less warlike—vibrated in her chest.

Outside the open archway a school of silver lantern-fish drifted past, their faint lights painting brief, shifting patterns across the white sand and the curve of her scales. The endless pressure of the abyss pressed in from every direction, yet inside the chamber the heated currents kept everything close, intimate, almost too warm.

Vince lowered his mouth to the elegant ridge of her collarbone and bit—gently, then a fraction harder when she did not pull away. Nerissa’s free hand finally left his shoulder and tangled in his hair, not quite pulling him closer, not quite pushing him off.

"I could still throw you out that archway," she whispered, the threat soft and unconvincing. "A few meters. Even you would feel it."

"Then do it." He lifted his head just enough to meet her eyes. The water between their mouths was thin as a held breath. "Or stop pretending you want me to leave."

For a long moment the only sound was the quiet rush of currents through the room and the distant, rhythmic thrum of the rebuilt citadel’s hydro-barriers. Nerissa’s golden gaze searched his face, pride and hunger locked in a visible, trembling war. Her caudal fin flexed once more beneath his knee, powerful enough that he felt the strength of a creature born to rule these depths—and still she did not throw him.

Instead, with a sound that was half snarl and half surrender, she surged upward and claimed the kiss herself.

It was not soft.

Teeth, tongue, the sharp taste of salt and the deeper, darker flavor of a siren who had spent fifty years denying herself anything that was not duty. Vince met her with equal force, one hand still pinning the sensitive midsection of her tail while the other slid up to cup the back of her neck, holding her exactly where he wanted her as the heated water swirled tighter around their bodies.

When they finally broke apart, fine trails of bubbles escaped both their mouths. Nerissa’s eyes were half-lidded, golden and storm-dark, her breathing uneven.

"This changes nothing," she managed, though the words lacked their earlier edge. "I am still the Tide Caller of Nethros."

Vince’s answering smile was slow, predatory, and entirely too pleased.

"Good," he said, and let his fingers drift lower along the elegant, powerful length of her caudal fin, mapping the places that made her breath hitch. "Then prove it. Show me how a commander takes what she wants."

Outside, the abyss waited, black and endless. Inside the pearl chamber the currents continued their gentle, heated circulation, carrying the scent of salt and desire through the soft white sand as the final phase of the quest unfolded in the dark.
