Chapter 114: Genesis of the Crows: Underground Arena

Six months passed in the smog and iron-dusted haze of Malgrath.

Six months of quiet expansion, brutal training, and gathering strength. Under Vesper’s guidance, the makeshift trio transformed the abandoned bell tower in the Lower District into a functional sanctuary. Brian grew taller and broader, his physical resilience reaching terrifying heights. Gideon, provided with raw scrap and a makeshift furnace Vesper purchased off the black market, proved his claim—his hands were gifted by the forge, capable of repairing, refining, and understanding the soul of metal better than veteran smiths twice his age.

Yet, despite their growing synergy, Vesper longed for something deeper, he still felt incomplete. They had brute strength, iron defense, and shadow-laced lethality.

An opportunity arrived on a frigid winter evening when a lucrative piece of intelligence reached Vesper’s ears.

Deep beneath the noble estates bordering the northern edge of Malgrath lay The Blood-Ring—an illicit, high-stakes underground arena run by Lord Cassian, a corrupt baron from the Western Duchy. Unlike the public fighting pits where desperate brawlers fought for silver, the Blood-Ring was a private spectacle for bored aristocrats. The fighters weren’t volunteers; they were young, stolen talents forced into life-or-death matches for noble entertainment.

Vesper, draped in his signature dark coat, slipped into the gallery rafters high above the torch-lit stone arena, his red eyes taking in the scene below. Beside him in the shadows stood Brian and Gideon, their eyes cold as they looked down at the iron-caged floor.

"Item six on tonight’s wager card!" the arena master bellowed, his voice amplified by wind-mana runes. "The Gale-Blade versus the Alchemist’s Daughter!"

The iron gates groaned open.

From the left gate stepped a girl around sixteen years old, clad in lightweight leather clothing that was frayed at the edges. She held a thin, notched practice rapier in her hand. Her dark eyes were sharp, her posture poised like a coiled spring, and a faint, shimmering aura of pale-green mana fluttered around her boots.

From the right gate stepped a younger girl, barely fourteen, clutching a leather bandolier filled with small glass vials. Her hands were stained with chemical burns, her face pale and rimmed with purple exhaustion, but her eyes burned with a fierce, frantic intelligence.

"Sara and Kira," Vesper murmured, reading from the stolen ledger in his hand. "Trafficked from the eastern border towns three months ago. The noble’s been forcing them to fight each other to test potion lethality against stealth and speed."

Below, the crowd of silk-cloaked nobles cheered, tossing copper and silver coins onto the stone floor.

"Fight!" the arena master roared.

In an instant, Sara moved. She didn’t attack to kill. Her feet glided across the stone with unnatural grace, the wind-mana concentratef under her soles making her movements look like a blurring phantom. She darted past Kira, deliberately parrying the younger girl’s thrown acid vials into the stone wall, keeping her distance while making the fight look dramatic enough to satisfy the crowd.

"She’s holding back," Brian observed in a low grunt, his thick fists clenching the wooden beam of the rafters. "She has no intent of harming the kid."

"And the kid is throwing harmless smoke reagents, not the lethal toxins in her belt," Gideon added quietly, his gray eyes narrowed as he analyzed their movements. "They’re staging it. They’re trying to keep the nobles entertained without hurting each other directly."

Vesper watched the intricate dance of desperation unfold. Sara’s blade flicked with incredible precision, deflecting danger while her wind-mana shielded Kira from splash damage. Kira, in turn, used her alchemical smoke to create sightlines that allowed Sara to dodge comfortably. It was an extraordinary display of unspoken trust and raw, unrefined talent forged under the threat of execution.

Then, Lord Cassian stood up from his velvet box above the arena, a disgusted look on his face.

"Boring!" the noble sneered, snapping his fingers at the armored guards standing around the cage. "They’re stalling again! Guards, release the crimson hounds into the ring. Let’s see how fast the gale-blade runs when her little friend is being chewed alive!"

The heavy iron portcullis at the back of the arena began to rise, revealing the glowing red eyes and snarling jaws of three starved, mana-infused war hounds.

Down in the ring, Sara instantly stepped in front of Kira, her rapier raised, her chest heaving as pale wind-mana surged around her blade. But Vesper could see the tremor in her legs—she was exhausted, her mana reserves nearly depleted from weeks of back-to-back fights.

Kira cowered behind her, clutching a single explosive vial, her knuckles white.

"Vesper..." Brian growled, stepping forward in the shadows, his heavy frame radiating ready violence.

Vesper looked down at the two girls—surrounded, exploited, yet standing together against impossible odds. He saw the same fierce, unyielding spark that had driven him in the gutters, that had kept Brian breathing in the rain, that had kept Gideon quiet under the hammer.

A slow, cold smile cut across Vesper’s face beneath his hood.

"No," Vesper whispered, maintaining a casual posture as dark shadow-mana flared quietly around his frame. "Making a move to save them here Will put us at risk...look around." He used his eyes to signal their attention to the audience.

"There are only nobles in this arena doing anything here could end up really bad for us... even in a lawless city, the power you command gives you authority," Gideon said.

Brian eased up, realizing the fact.

"For now we watch and enjoy the show. There’s nothing more unpredictable and surprising than a cornered animal." Vesper said, squinting his eyes as he watched the girls closely.

"I believe more in numbers and currently the numbers say they are cooked unless a miracle happens." Brian said, leaning forward.

"Life is a gamble Brian, win or lose it’s all risk...and besides if there’s a chance at victory then it’s worth it," Vesper replied, smiling.

"Begin!!"

"They’ve made the call. It’s up to the heavens now," Gideon said as the air filled with anticipation.
