Chapter 115: Genesis of the Crows: A Family
Down in the pit, the iron cage echoed with the ferocious, metallic snarls of three crimson war hounds. Their red-tinged fur bristled with hostile mana as they prowled forward, claws gouging grooves into the stone.
Sara shifted her footing, placing herself squarely between the beasts and Kira. Her pale-green mana flickered erratically around her boots—she was running on fumes.
"Sara..." Kira whimpered, her burnt fingers trembling against the glass vial of explosive reagent in her palm. "I... I only have one destabilized flask left. If I detonate it at this range, it’ll catch us too."
"Save it," Sara rasped, her dark eyes never leaving the lead hound. "The second they leap, drop a heavy smoke screen at our feet. On my mark."
High in the rafters, Brian clenched his jaw, his massive shoulders tense. "They’re out of room. The lead hound’s coiling its legs."
"Watch," Vesper murmured, his red eyes sharp, unblinking in the dark.
ROAR!
The lead crimson hound lunged, a blur of red fur and razor jaws aimed straight for Sara’s throat. The second beast flanked left, closing off her retreat toward the iron bars.
"Now, Kira!" Sara barked.
Kira slammed the smoke flask onto the stone floor. A violent cloud of thick, white acrid smoke billowed outward instantly, obscuring the ring.
Through the haze, the sound of metal slicing flesh rang out—SLASH!
Sara didn’t attempt a heavy, head-on block against the beast’s momentum. Guided by pure instinct, she used her last surge of wind-mana to leap onto the head of the leaping hound, using the beast’s own velocity to vault high into the air. Mid-flip, her rapier darted down like a strike of lightning, plunging directly through the second hound’s eye socket.
The hound hit the floor, dead before it slid.
The gallery of nobles gasped. Lord Cassian leaned over his velvet rail, his jaw dropping.
"They actually took one down?!" Brian grinned, a low rumble in his chest. "Told you. Cornered animal."
"She used wind-mana to alter her mass mid-air," Gideon noted quietly, a rare look of genuine respect in his red eyes. "That took perfect timing."
Down below, Sara landed heavily on her knees beside Kira, coughing blood into her hand. The remaining two hounds circled the smoke, low growls vibrating through their chests as they prepared a simultaneous charge from both sides. Sara tried to raise her rapier, but her arm gave out, the tip of the blade scraping uselessly against the floor.
She was completely spent.
Lord Cassian grinned, recovering his composure. "Impudent rats! Finish them!"
"That’s the miracle," Vesper said quietly. He stood up straight, his dark coat shifting as shadowy mana flared wildly from his frame.
Vesper looked at Brian and Gideon. "Gideon, shatter the main support winch for the gallery lanterns. Bring the lights down. Brian, the iron gate."
"With pleasure," Brian grunted.
BOOM!
A deafening crack shattered the silence of the noble gallery. Gideon swung his heavy iron bar into the iron pulley system above the arena. Thick chains snapped, sending two massive chandeliers crashing into the noble seating area in a violent explosion of fire, glass, and screaming aristocrats.
Before the arena guards could react, a massive shadow dropped from the rafters straight into the cage.
CRASH!
Brian landed with enough kinetic force to shatter the stone flooring, creating a shockwave that threw the two charging war hounds back against the iron bars. He didn’t hesitate—he reached out, grabbed both hounds by their scruffs, and smashed their skulls together with sickening force.
"What the hell?!" Lord Cassian shrieked from the burning gallery. "Assassins! Kill them all!"
Smoke flared wildly in the center of the ring. Vesper materialized from the shadows right beside Sara and Kira.
Sara flinched, instinctively pulling Kira behind her and thrusting her notched rapier toward Vesper’s chest. "Stay back—!"
Vesper casually caught the flat of her rapier blade between two fingers, stopping it effortlessly. His red eyes glowed beneath his hood, calm and completely unbothered by the chaos around them.
"Lower the steel, Gale-Blade," Vesper said softly.
"You put on a great show. But your contract here just got canceled."
Kira stared at the mysterious man in dark robes, then at the mountain of a boy who had just crushed two war hounds with his bare hands. "Who... who are you?"
"The people who are getting you out of this cage," Vesper replied. He looked at Sara, offering a leather-gloved hand. "If you want to live by your own rules instead of bleeding for fat men in silk... take my hand."
Sara looked at the burning gallery, at the panicking nobles, and then down at Vesper’s outstretched hand. The exhaustion in her chest was still heavy, but for the first time in months, she saw a way out that didn’t end in a grave.
She took his hand.
Vesper pulled her to her feet, while Brian easily scooped Kira onto his broad shoulder like a sack of grain.
"Gideon! Clear the exit!" Vesper called out.
At the far end of the arena, Gideon slammed his massive frame into the locked reinforced exit doors, tearing the iron hinges completely out of the stone wall.
"Path is clear!" Gideon hollered back over the roar of the flames.
"Move!" Vesper ordered.
Using the smoke, flames, and total panic of the noble gallery as cover, the five of them vanished into the dark subterranean tunnels beneath Malgrath, leaving the burning Blood-Ring behind forever.
Later that night, miles away from the noble district, deep in the quiet sanctuary of the abandoned bell tower...
A small fire crackled in the center of the room. The cold winter rain beat softly against the stone roof outside, but inside, the air was warm.
Kira was hungrily devouring a bowl of thick hot stew, her burnt hands wrapped around the warm clay dish. Sara sat near the hearth, her back resting against a stone pillar as Gideon carefully polished her notched rapier, examining the metal with a critical, appreciative eye. Brian sat nearby, sharpening a crude iron daggers against a whetstone.
Vesper stood near the arched window, looking out over the quiet, dark horizon of Malgrath.
Sara set her bowl down, her dark eyes looking across the fire at Vesper. "Why did you help us out? You risked your lives against the Duchy nobles for two girls you don’t even know."
Vesper turned around, pulling down his hood. The firelight flickered across his sharp features.
"Because Malgrath is full of wolves and stray dogs," Vesper said quietly.
He walked over to the fire, sitting down with the four of them.
"We don’t bow to nobles. We don’t sell out to guilds. And we never leave family behind," Vesper continued, his red eyes sweeping across Brian, Gideon, Sara, and Kira. "From tonight on, we look out for each other."
Sara stared at him for a long second. A small, rare smile touched her lips, the tension finally leaving her shoulders.
"A family..." she repeated softly. "I like the sound of that."
That night, around a crackling fire in a cold bell tower, five strays bound their fates together—officially marking the true birth of the flock.
