Chapter 460 - 66 — Manchester United VS Brentford - Brentford’s Trap
Bruno rolled the kickoff back to Casemiro, and Brentford’s trap sprang exactly the way Friday’s tactical session had warned it would.
Mbeumo curved his run in from Casemiro’s right, using his body to cut off the pass back toward Maguire, while Wissa closed from the opposite side and Nørgaard hung a few yards behind them both, waiting for the forced ball that had to come through Demien.
Casemiro recognized the trigger before it fully closed and refused to turn, returning the ball to Evans instead while Mbeumo was still a stride away.
Demien had already drifted clear of Nørgaard rather than sitting on Casemiro’s line, so when Evans found Dalot and Dalot played it into him, he returned it first time before Nørgaard could arrive from behind, then accelerated around the midfielder and took Dalot’s second pass facing Brentford’s goal.

He lifted his head, but Brentford’s back five had already reset — Hickey narrowing beside Collins, Roerslev tucking in next to Ajer, Pinnock holding central against Højlund — the shape closing before United could reach the space behind it.
Demien switched it wide to Rashford, who controlled and squared up to Roerslev, tried to drive inside, and found Ajer already stepping across from the back three to shut the route before he could enter the box.
Rashford played it back to Demien rather than force anything through a defender who wasn’t beaten.
"Brentford escaped the press, but they beat us to the final ball," Demien said, pointing at Rashford. "Start the run earlier next time I’m facing forward."
"Brentford aren’t pressing everything," the commentator said. "Mbeumo and Wissa wait for a midfielder receiving with his back to goal, and the rest of the team drop into a five the second United break the first line."
Brentford produced the first real warning in the third minute.
United circulated along the back line until Antony received on the right and tried to force it inside toward Bruno, only for Hickey, already narrowing into the lane, to get a foot to the pass and knock it loose for Jensen to collect and send straight on to Wissa.
Wissa pulled Maguire out wide into the left channel, dragging the center-back with him and opening the middle for Mbeumo to drift into against Evans.
He carried toward the box, saw Demien recovering into the passing lane toward Mbeumo, and cut the ball back instead — straight into Hickey’s path, the wingback still arriving from deep, twenty-five yards out, and Hickey struck it first time.
The shot skimmed narrowly outside Onana’s right post.
Demien turned to Antony before the goal kick. "Hickey can’t arrive outside the box with nobody following him."
"I moved inside to help the press," Antony said.
"The press is finished once they play through it," Demien answered, keeping it short with Onana already setting the ball for the restart.
Brentford threatened again in the sixth minute, Mbeumo shielding the ball near the right touchline from Lindelöf while Jensen ran inside him, forcing Demien to choose between tracking the midfielder or helping against Mbeumo.
He tracked Jensen, and Mbeumo used the space outside to curl an early cross toward Wissa between Maguire and Evans.
Wissa got there first and tried to guide it home with one touch, but Evans threw his right leg across the shot and blocked it inside the box, the rebound striking Wissa on the way out for a goal kick.
Evans struck his own chest once and shouted for the midfield to close the cross sooner.
Demien raised a hand, acknowledging he couldn’t have reached Mbeumo after following Jensen, then turned to Lindelöf. "Show him toward the touchline. Don’t let him cut onto his stronger foot."
United broke the press again in the ninth minute.
Onana found Maguire, Mbeumo already curving toward Casemiro before the pass had even landed, so Maguire sent it to Demien instead.
Nørgaard pressed into his back while Wissa cut off the lane to Evans, and Demien checked his shoulder, cushioned the ball across his body, and used his shoulder to hold Nørgaard off before playing one touch into Casemiro and spinning past him into the space behind Brentford’s midfield.

Casemiro found him again before Mbeumo could recover, and Demien received facing forward with Bruno drifting into the right half-space, dragging Janelt across with him, Rashford holding Roerslev wide.
He shaped toward Bruno.
Nørgaard shifted to cover the lane.
Demien drove a low diagonal behind Roerslev for Rashford instead, and Rashford controlled it near the corner of the box, cut inside as Ajer stepped out and Roerslev recovered from behind, and got a shot away before both defenders could close him down completely.
Ajer slid across and blocked it with his thigh, the loop falling toward Bruno at the penalty spot, only for Pinnock to arrive first and head it clear.

Demien clapped toward Rashford anyway. "Right run — the touch just carried you too close to Ajer."
Brentford’s block frustrated United again in the twelfth minute, Dalot overlapping beyond Antony only for Antony to ignore the run, cut inside, and try to combine with Bruno straight into Janelt and Hickey closing from both sides.
Hickey got a foot to the attempted pass and knocked it out toward the touchline, and Dalot kept it in and crossed from a standing position, but Pinnock beat Højlund to it and headed clear before shoving the whole line forward again.
Demien collected the clearance twenty-five yards out with Jensen already charging at him, expecting another cross.
He took one touch across Jensen, opened the lane, and struck low through the bodies toward the far corner.
Strakosha saw it late but got down in time, pushing it away with both hands, and when Højlund lunged for the rebound, Collins beat him to it and cleared into the stand.
Demien had already taken two steps toward the box, certain it was going in, and when it didn’t, he pressed one hand to his head, exhaled hard, and clapped once toward the goalkeeper before jogging toward the corner.
The sixteenth minute nearly punished United from their own set piece.
Bruno’s delivery found Maguire, Pinnock won the header first and sent it out to Mbeumo, who controlled with his chest and released Wissa straight into the channel behind Dalot.
Demien was already recovering when Wissa received, and so was Casemiro, both turning toward the ball at once until Demien spotted Jensen breaking free through the middle and abandoned the chase on Wissa to sprint inside and block the central lane instead.
Wissa kept going anyway with the middle now closed, only for Maguire to recover across and force him wider, and his shot from the reduced angle sat up nicely for Onana to catch at his near post.

"Only one of us can chase the carrier when they counter," Demien told Casemiro after the save.
"You were already closer to Wissa," Casemiro said.
"That’s exactly why I switched — Jensen was free," Demien answered.
Demien and Højlund built United’s first clear chance in the nineteenth minute.
Demien dropped beside Casemiro and pulled Nørgaard several yards away from Brentford’s back five, took Maguire’s pass, played first time into Bruno, and kept moving before Nørgaard could turn.
Bruno returned it straight into his path.
Højlund had already gone to meet Ajer between the lines, shielding the ball while Pinnock stayed put and Collins stepped across to cover centrally, and Demien continued his own run beyond him, taking the lay-off with one touch.
He entered the space outside the box with Nørgaard still behind him, waited until Collins fully committed, then slipped Højlund into the exact channel Collins had just vacated.

Højlund controlled inside the box and shot low across Strakosha, but Pinnock recovered from the middle and threw himself into the path of it, his outstretched leg turning the ball behind.

Højlund slapped his own thigh, wanting the pass half a second sooner.
"You had to wait for Collins to step," Demien said.
"I was already moving," Højlund answered, and both of them turned for the corner without settling it any further.
Bruno’s delivery was cleared by Ajer.
Brentford answered from a free kick in the twenty-second minute, Lindelöf catching Mbeumo late after the forward shielded the ball and spun toward goal, and Mbeumo himself sent the delivery straight through the crowd in the six-yard box.
Collins attacked the near post, Maguire followed him in, and neither made clean contact, the ball skating across Onana’s goal and passing just beyond Wissa at the far post.
Demien turned his head to track it the whole way across, exhaling when it missed Wissa, then immediately pushed the defensive line back out before Brentford could recycle the second phase.
"Brentford are happy to give United the ball," the commentator said, "because their clearest chances keep coming from turnovers, set pieces, and the space around United’s center-backs."
The move that produced Brentford’s goal began in the twenty-fifth minute, after Evans headed away a long ball and United recovered possession.
Casemiro received near the center circle with his back to Brentford’s goal, and Demien had already pushed several yards ahead, expecting the ball to go through Maguire before finding him beyond the first press.
Mbeumo closed from Casemiro’s right.
Wissa angled his run to cut off the safe pass backward.
Nørgaard sat between Casemiro and Demien, exactly where the trap needed him.
Casemiro saw Mbeumo arriving and believed he had time to turn anyway, taking his first touch across his own body — and Mbeumo reached around him and poked the ball loose before the turn could finish.
Casemiro lunged straight back in to recover it, catching Mbeumo’s ankle a half-second after the forward had already knocked it on to Jensen, and the referee waved play on for advantage rather than stopping it.
Jensen released Wissa into the right side of the box.
Demien had already turned and was sprinting back through the center, his pace enough to reach the edge of the danger, but he’d started behind Casemiro’s mistake and couldn’t simply materialize between Jensen and goal.
Wissa sent a low ball toward Mbeumo, and Evans stretched to intercept it but only knocked it straight back to Wissa instead of clearing it away from the box.
Wissa collected it again near the byline, Maguire closing, Casemiro scrambling to recover centrally, Demien still tracking Mbeumo’s run.
Jensen kept drifting behind the collapsing United midfield, unmarked.
Wissa looked up and cut it backward to him at the penalty spot.
Jensen struck it low, left-footed, along the ground.
Onana dropped and got one hand behind it, but the ball squeezed under his palm and crossed the line.
