Chapter 461 - 67 — Manchester United VS Brentford - Brentford’s Trap II
Manchester United 0 — 1 Brentford Mathias Jensen 26’
Jensen sprinted toward the away end with both arms spread, Mbeumo reaching him first, Wissa pointing back toward the spot where he’d won the ball in the first place, because the whole move had started with Brentford’s press.
Brentford’s bench rose together, Thomas Frank pumping one fist before immediately waving his players back into shape.
Demien slowed several yards from Onana, staring at him, because a saveable effort had gone in only days after Galatasaray.
His jaw tightened.
He looked ready to say something, then saw Onana still down on one knee and swallowed it instead, turning away to retrieve the ball from the net and carry it back toward the center circle himself.
He set it down hard on the spot. "Restart the second Brentford’s back in their half," he told Bruno, nothing more than that.
"United spent the week preparing for exactly this trap," the commentator said, "and Casemiro still tried to turn with his back to goal. Brentford punished the turnover before United could reset their shape."
Brentford dropped deeper now that they led, Nørgaard no longer chasing Demien as aggressively whenever he dropped, content to hold the space in front of the back five while Mbeumo and Wissa stayed poised for the counter.
United worked it from Maguire to Evans to Lindelöf in the twenty-ninth minute, Demien drifting left to offer a safer angle, and Nørgaard stayed central rather than follow him out.
He received facing forward with room to carry, Janelt only stepping out once he’d crossed halfway, and sent a long diagonal behind Hickey toward Antony.

Antony controlled it near the corner of the box and cut inside, Hickey recovering outside him, Collins blocking the central lane, and laid it off to Bruno, who struck first time from the edge of the box.
Collins threw his body across the shot and knocked it into the air, and Pinnock cleared the loose ball beyond Højlund before it could fall dangerously.

"Dalot, stay wider," Demien called across the pitch. "Antony cutting inside is putting too many of us in front of their center-backs."
Brentford nearly broke again in the thirty-second minute, Bruno’s pass toward Højlund read and cut out by Nørgaard, who sent Mbeumo away into the right channel before United’s midfield could recover shape.
Mbeumo drove at Lindelöf, Wissa ran across Evans, and Jensen again attacked the central space from behind — but this time Demien tracked him.
Mbeumo cut inside looking for the midfielder, and Demien stretched across the passing lane and intercepted it clean.

He didn’t hoof it clear blindly, turning his back on Jensen, shielding it from Mbeumo, and finding Rashford near halfway, though Roerslev stayed close enough to force Rashford backward before the break could develop into anything.
Demien created another opening for Højlund in the thirty-fifth minute, receiving from Evans with Nørgaard protecting the center, and instead of carrying straight at him, drifting right to drag Janelt across and leaving the space for Bruno to drop into.
He played it into Bruno, ran on beyond Janelt, and took the return near the edge of the final third.
Højlund started between Pinnock and Collins, then broke sharply for the right channel, and Demien released him with the outside of his boot before Pinnock could follow the run.

Højlund reached the box with Bruno arriving centrally, but chose to shoot from the tight angle himself, and the ball cracked into the side netting.
Demien threw both arms out toward where Bruno had been standing.
"There was a whole net on his side," Højlund said, pointing at the gap by Strakosha’s post.
"Bruno had the bigger goal," Demien said.
"Strikers don’t see the bigger goal. We see the one in front of us," Højlund answered, and Bruno cut them both off before it could go further. "Enough — goal kick’s coming."
United’s best individual chance of the half arrived in the thirty-seventh minute, Maguire finding Casemiro, who this time refused to turn at all, returning the ball to Maguire and moving away from Mbeumo before the trap could even form.
Demien dropped into the space Casemiro had opened, took it from Maguire facing forward, and drove through the first line.
Nørgaard stepped out to meet him.
Demien slipped it into Bruno and kept running beyond the midfielder, and Bruno returned it first time, Højlund pinning Pinnock centrally, Rashford’s movement pulling Ajer left, Antony holding Hickey on the far side.
A clean shooting lane opened twenty-two yards out.
Demien took one touch into it and struck low toward the far corner.
Strakosha dove to his right and got a strong hand to it, pushing it beyond the post.

Demien stopped with both hands on his hips, staring at the goalkeeper, then shook his head and clapped once in irritated respect.
Old Trafford rose with the chance, the loudest it had been all half, because for the first time United had actually pulled Brentford’s central defense apart rather than crossing at it.
"That’s the difference," the commentator said. "United finally moved the ball away from pressure before attacking from behind Nørgaard, instead of putting every attacker straight in front of the back five."
Bruno’s resulting corner found Maguire’s head, but the effort sailed over the bar.
Brentford nearly doubled their lead in the fortieth minute, Pinnock heading clear toward Mbeumo near halfway after another United cross had gone begging, and Mbeumo carried it straight into the space behind Lindelöf.
Demien sprinted back centrally and blocked the direct pass toward Wissa, forcing Mbeumo to keep the ball himself.
Mbeumo cut inside onto his left foot before Demien could close the shooting lane and curled it from twenty-five yards.
The shot beat Onana’s dive and skimmed narrowly beyond the far post.
Demien turned toward United’s attacking players once the ball had gone out. "The structure can’t be two centre-backs and two recovering midfielders every time we clear a cross," he shouted, pointing back at Maguire and Evans.
"We need bodies in the box while we’re chasing this," Bruno said.
"Bodies in the box are useless if they score the second one on the counter," Demien shot back, and Casemiro stepped between them, ordering both back into position before it could go further.
Brentford threatened again from a set piece in the forty-second minute, Antony fouling Hickey while trying to stop his run, and Jensen’s delivery found Janelt for the first flick near post.
The header traveled across the six-yard box, Collins stretching beyond Evans but missing contact by inches, and the ball went out beyond the far post.
Onana shouted down the line, pointing toward the near-post runner Janelt had beaten to the ball.
Demien glanced at the stadium clock, the frustration in the crowd sharp whenever United recycled backward now, the noise only lifting when he or Bruno received facing Brentford’s goal.
United pushed for the equalizer in the forty-fourth minute, Demien slipping a sharp pass into Højlund outside the block, Højlund laying it to Bruno, and Bruno trying to release Rashford behind Roerslev, only for Ajer to step across and put it into touch.
The quick throw found Lindelöf, who found Demien, who switched it to Antony before Brentford’s five could fully shift, and Antony crossed early — straight into Pinnock, who beat Højlund in the air yet again and headed it clear.
"Play through the box, not over it," Demien told Antony, pointing at the ground, his patience with the crosses gone.
United found one last chance in stoppage time, Demien dropping beside Casemiro, and this time Nørgaard finally followed him, unwilling to let him receive freely.
Demien played it backward to Maguire and spun away before Nørgaard could react.
Maguire found Bruno between Brentford’s midfield and defense, and Bruno took one touch before returning it into Demien’s path as he continued his run beyond Nørgaard.
Højlund started beside Pinnock, then broke for the gap between him and Collins, and Demien lifted the pass over the defensive line before Collins could step back in time.

Højlund reached the dropping ball ahead of Strakosha and directed his header toward the far corner.
Strakosha dove backward and got one hand to it, pushing it just beyond the post.
「MATCH MISSION PROGRESS」 「Clear Chances Created: 3/4」
Old Trafford rose as the ball flew, certain it was in, and groaned as one when Strakosha reached it.
Højlund landed and struck the turf with his palm.
Demien stood motionless outside the area for a beat, jaw clenched, then turned toward the corner flag and called for the ball, because there might still be time.
Bruno’s corner was cleared by Pinnock.
The referee blew for halftime.
Manchester United 0 — 1 Brentford Mathias Jensen 26’
Brentford’s defenders gathered near the center circle, Pinnock and Ajer slapping hands after surviving the last chance, Jensen walking toward the away section before Frank steered him back into the tunnel.
United left the pitch in pieces rather than as a group.
Casemiro walked with his head down, the goal having started from the exact trap they’d trained against all week.
Onana pulled one glove off halfway down the tunnel, then pulled it back on without looking at anyone.
Højlund kept shaking his head over Strakosha’s last save.
Demien walked beside Bruno, breathing hard, talking low about how Brentford were happy to let United reach the wide areas because that’s exactly where they wanted the crosses coming from.

The dressing room went quiet the moment Ten Hag put Brentford’s goal up on the screen.
He paused it with Casemiro receiving near halfway, Mbeumo closing from one side, Wissa cutting off the backward route, Nørgaard sitting between Casemiro and Demien exactly as planned, Demien already moved beyond the ball expecting the safe return.
He didn’t raise his voice.
He pointed at the frozen frame, at the exact press they’d rehearsed on Friday, then looked at Casemiro.
Casemiro didn’t defend himself, staring at the floor and dragging both hands down his face.
Ten Hag moved to the attacking footage next, Højlund boxed in by three center-backs, cross after cross launched from standing positions instead of anything United had actually built.
Then he changed the shape.
Christian Eriksen pulled his training top off and started warming up along the sideline, ready to replace Casemiro.
Ten Hag slid Demien’s marker down to the base of midfield, placed Eriksen ahead of him beside Bruno, and kept Rashford and Antony pinned wide so Brentford’s wingbacks couldn’t narrow without paying for it, Højlund staying central while Eriksen and Bruno were told to attack the box at different times instead of standing outside it together.
Demien looked from the board toward Casemiro.
Casemiro finally lifted his head and gave him one short nod, accepting the change without a word of argument.
Ten Hag turned to Eriksen, then pointed at the marker sitting alone at the base of United’s midfield.
"Christian, you’re on. Demien, the middle is yours."
