After a few dozen seconds, Hiroshi finally sat up slowly and said to Harumiko beside him with a smile, "Alright then, I’ll sleep on the bed tonight. You take this side, and I’ll take the other."
Then Hiroshi slowly moved to the other side of the bed, pulled back the quilt, and lay down carefully. At that moment, even though he tried to stay calm, his heart was beating wildly as he stared up at the ceiling.
"Okay, now I can finally sleep peacefully. Good night," Harumiko said softly, closing her eyes as she lay next to Hiroshi.
"Good night, Harumiko."
How could Hiroshi possibly fall asleep? This was the first time he had ever shared a bed with a girl, and the feeling was truly unlike anything he had ever experienced.
About five minutes later, Hiroshi noticed that Harumiko’s breathing had become steady and deep, a sign that she had drifted off to sleep.
"She’s finally asleep. It looks like I won’t be getting any rest tonight after all. I don’t think sleep will come easily for me like this."
But just as Hiroshi was speaking softly to himself, something completely unexpected happened before he could even finish his thought.
Harumiko turned over, moved slowly closer to Hiroshi, and suddenly wrapped her arms tightly around him.
"Wait, what on earth is going on? Could this mean my luck in love is finally taking off? I’ve never felt anything quite like this before!" Hiroshi thought to himself, his heart beating faster and faster.
Then he felt his arm brush against something incredibly soft, which made his heart race even more wildly. But just then, he heard a voice he knew all too well.
"Hiroshi, your heart is beating so fast. Don’t think about anything else anymore. I just want to hold you and sleep well," Harumiko mumbled softly, shifting her head where it rested against his shoulder.
Hiroshi was so taken aback by her words that he nearly stopped breathing. He nodded gently and said, "Alright, alright. Good night."
They stayed in that position for a long time, until Hiroshi finally realized that Harumiko had fallen into a deep, sound sleep. By then, he noticed that his own heartbeat had slowed down significantly and was slowly returning to its normal rhythm.
"I never imagined I’d get to enjoy something this wonderful tonight. Who would have thought? It seems my time has finally come. I’d better get some sleep quickly too—after all, this is the first time I’ve ever fallen asleep holding a girl in my arms!" Hiroshi thought to himself happily.
Then he shifted his body slightly and rested his hand gently against Harumiko’s back. And so, the two of them fell asleep wrapped in each other’s embrace.
As he drifted off, a faint smile tugged at the corners of Hiroshi’s mouth. He adjusted his position once more to find a comfortable spot and slowly slipped into sleep.
It had been a full and rewarding day for both of them. That evening, they had eaten the first proper, hearty meal they’d had in a very long time, and now they were sleeping on a real, comfortable bed for the first time in ages. It was certain that they would both rest extremely well that night.
Ever since leaving the Hidden Leaf Village, they had rarely had the chance to sleep in such proper beds. Most nights, they spent camping out in the forest, usually sleeping high up in the branches of trees. Only when they passed through villages could they find proper places to stay—otherwise, comfortable beds were something they could only dream of.
And as for their meals, most of the time they ate whatever game they managed to catch while traveling through the woods. Before leaving each village, they would always stock up on food supplies to carry them through their journey ahead.
Gradually, the whole village grew quiet. It really was true that the people here loved to stay out late and enjoy the night air—they would wander around and enjoy themselves until past one o’clock in the morning before finally heading home to rest. After that, the night was truly peaceful and quiet, but before long, a new day would begin, promising to be just as happy and fulfilling as the last.
"Wow, I really did sleep better than I expected last night. But now I suddenly feel like I’ve forgotten something, and yet I also feel strangely excited!" Hiroshi said softly as he opened his eyes and looked out the window, where bright sunlight was streaming into the room.
"What’s going on here? Why does my arm feel so heavy? And it’s gone completely numb too!" Hiroshi frowned as he noticed something felt wrong with his arm, and slowly turned his head to look.
Right then, he saw Harumiko lying right beside him, her head resting perfectly on his arm. In that instant, he suddenly remembered exactly what it was he had forgotten earlier.
