Chapter 426 - 323 : Already Handled!!
Corridor Seven was quiet.
That was the first thing wrong with it.
---
Orochimaru had walked this stretch of hallway every morning for longer than he cared to count, and it was never quiet. Chunin running messages. Clerks arguing over requisition forms. The low, constant hum of a village government that never fully stopped moving.
This morning there was nobody.
Just sealed doors on either side, and four Root operatives standing in a loose perimeter around something on the floor that hadn’t been there yesterday.
---
He didn’t slow his pace.
"Explain this," he said, close enough now to see what the perimeter was actually protecting.
---
A specimen.
Four stub limbs, smooth-bodied, no larval segmentation — nothing on any authorized manifest he’d signed off on. It lay motionless inside a chakra-suppression seal painted directly onto the corridor floor, fresh ink still faintly damp at the edges.
Someone had prepared that seal in advance.
Not improvised. Prepared.
---
One of the operatives, mask blank and unmarked, stepped forward exactly far enough to answer without yielding ground.
"Contained on Lord Danzo’s order, Sannin. No injuries. The specimen made no attempt to breach the seal once placed."
---
"You had a suppression seal already painted on my corridor," Orochimaru said, "before the specimen arrived."
The operative didn’t answer that.
The silence answered it instead.
---
[Talent Card Update: Divergent Expression]
World: Bleach (Kurotsuchi Mayuri lineage)
Quality: Epic (confirmed)
Effect: Colony specimen successfully suppressed by pre-positioned chakra seal. Seal design and placement indicate advance knowledge of both the colony’s chakra signature and the specific corridor it would use — surveillance predates tonight’s breach by an unconfirmed margin.
---
Orochimaru crouched beside the contained specimen, close enough to study the limbs without touching the seal’s edge.
Grown in secret. During the pause he himself had ordered.
Kagetsu hadn’t done this on purpose — he was almost certain of that much, the boy’s panic over the comm line ten minutes ago hadn’t been performance — but someone had known this specimen existed, known its likely path, and known exactly where to paint a seal to catch it before it reached anyone important.
That wasn’t reconnaissance.
That was preparation for an event that hadn’t happened yet.
---
"How long have you had eyes on the colony program," Orochimaru said. Not a question. A demand dressed politely enough to still be answerable.
---
The lead operative’s mask tilted, fractionally, toward the sealed specimen rather than toward Orochimaru.
"Long enough to know it would eventually need containing, Sannin. Lord Danzo believed in preparing for the likely outcome rather than reacting to the surprising one."
"And you didn’t think to inform the Hokage that you expected a breach."
"We informed Lord Danzo. He determines what reaches the Hokage, and when."
---
Orochimaru’s jaw tightened.
That was the entire structure of Root in one sentence, delivered without a hint of shame, because to the man wearing that mask there was nothing to be ashamed of. Information didn’t belong to the village. It belonged to whoever decided how the village should use it.
---
His comm crackled.
Kagetsu’s voice, thin with static and something closer to real fear than Orochimaru had heard from him in months.
"Corridor Seven, this is Kagetsu — did it reach the corridor, is anyone hurt, I’m locked in the storage wing, someone sealed a second layer over the blast doors from outside and I don’t know who—"
---
Orochimaru keyed the channel open. "The specimen is contained. No one is hurt. Stay where you are."
"I can’t ’stay where I am,’ the door won’t open—"
"Then it won’t open until I get there," Orochimaru said, already turning down the corridor, "and I will be the one who opens it."
He cut the channel before Kagetsu could argue.
---
He looked back at the lead operative.
"Who sealed the storage wing."
"Not us, Sannin."
"You expect me to believe that."
"I don’t require you to believe anything. I require you to note that Root’s containment protocols end at removing the escaped specimen from public corridors. Sealing an occupied research wing with a person still inside falls well outside that mandate, and well outside anything Lord Danzo would authorize without cause."
---
Which meant either the operative was lying with a very specific, careful precision —
Or someone else, not Root, had sealed Kagetsu inside that wing.
---
Orochimaru didn’t like either option.
He liked the second one considerably less.
---
"Take the specimen to a secure Root holding cell," he said. "Not a village facility. Not yet. I want it somewhere Danzo can’t quietly relocate it before I’ve had a chance to examine it myself."
The lead operative hesitated — the first genuine pause in the entire exchange.
"That instruction conflicts with standing orders, Sannin."
"Then your standing orders are now superseded by a direct one from me, and you can explain the contradiction to Lord Danzo personally. I’ll be present for that conversation as well, whenever he’d like to schedule it."
---
The operative said nothing for a moment.
Then bowed, fractionally, and signaled the other three to begin moving the sealed specimen.
---
Orochimaru watched them go, then broke into a flat run toward the Technology Development wing, chakra flooding into his legs, corridor after corridor blurring past in a way that would have looked, to anyone still awake at this hour, considerably less dignified than a Sannin generally allowed himself to appear in public.
He didn’t care.
Something had locked a person inside a live containment breach and he intended to find out who before Danzo had the chance to decide he didn’t need to know.
---
The storage wing’s outer door came into view at the end of the last corridor.
The external reinforcement layer was still down, exactly as Kagetsu had described — a second plate of sealed alloy bolted directly over the building’s own blast door, crude and fast and deliberately untraceable, the kind of work that left no maker’s mark because the person doing it had never intended to be found.
Orochimaru pressed a hand flat against the cold metal.
He could feel a chakra signature humming faintly on the other side.
Not Kagetsu’s.
Forty-three of them, perfectly synchronized, and getting louder.
