Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 427 - 320 : Borrowed Voice!!

The door hadn’t finished sliding shut behind Danzo before Kagetsu was moving.

Not toward the exit.

Toward the trays.

---

Danzo’s chakra signature was still fading out of the corridor sensors — a slow bleed of pressure retreating step by step, controlled, unhurried, the way a man walks when he wants you to know he’s in no rush to come back.

Kagetsu didn’t watch the sensor readout.

He was already three racks deep into the storage wing, counting tray numbers under his breath, when the lab’s ambient hum changed pitch.

Low.

Wrong.

He stopped.

---

Tray Nine.

Stable since intake. Never flagged, never accelerated, never so much as logged an anomaly in three separate audits. A control specimen. The kind of tray you kept around specifically because nothing happened to it.

Something was happening to it now.

The gel inside had gone from translucent to a faint, oily sheen, the surface tension breaking in slow concentric ripples like something underneath was breathing for the first time.

Kagetsu didn’t touch the containment lid.

He pulled a scanner instead.

---

[Talent Card Update: Divergent Expression]

World: Bleach (Kurotsuchi Mayuri lineage)

Quality: Rare — escalating

Effect: Specimen has begun integrating a chakra imprint. Source signature does NOT match any donor tissue record on file. Signature is active-pattern, not residual — consistent with a living source encountered within the last twelve minutes.

---

Kagetsu read it twice.

Active-pattern.

Meiko’s fragment had been residue. Dead tissue holding the last shape of a mind that no longer existed to argue about it. Sad, but inert. A photograph, not a person.

This wasn’t a photograph.

This was still warm.

---

He ran the timestamp against the corridor logs without needing to. He already knew.

Twelve minutes put it exactly where Danzo had been standing.

Not near Tray Nine. Nowhere close to it — Danzo hadn’t gone anywhere near the storage wing, had stayed in the primary workspace the entire visit, arms folded, voice flat, offering Kagetsu a version of protection that came with a leash sewn into the collar.

Tray Nine was two rooms away.

Sealed. Shielded. Not wired into anything that should have been listening.

---

Kagetsu’s hand went still over the scanner.

It didn’t need to be near him.

The colony’s chakra sensitivity had always been closer to reiatsu-perception than normal shinobi sensing — bleedthrough, ambient pressure, the kind of thing Kagetsu had spent months trying to dampen so the trays wouldn’t destabilize every time a jonin walked past the building.

He’d been treating that sensitivity as a liability.

He’d never once tested what it could pick up.

---

The gel shifted again.

A shape pressed up from beneath the surface — not a limb, not yet, just pressure finding the thinnest point in the membrane and testing it.

Kagetsu leaned in.

---

"Talk to me," he said quietly. "Say something. Anything."

Nothing.

Thirty seconds. A minute.

He was reaching for the manual override when the membrane finally split — not violently, just enough, the way a mouth opens before the first word instead of after.

---

The voice that came out wasn’t Meiko’s cracked, apologetic half-sentence.

It was flat. Even. Bureaucratic.

"— unnecessary, as long as the Hokage continues confusing patience for progress. I’d rather you understand this now than resent me for it later."

---

Kagetsu’s stomach dropped through the floor.

That was Danzo’s voice.

Not an impression. Not a guess extrapolated from a chakra signature and best effort. The exact cadence, the exact dry weight on resent — a sentence Kagetsu had heard with his own ears less than fifteen minutes ago, standing three meters from the man who said it.

Word for word.

---

He didn’t move for a long five seconds.

Then he grabbed the emergency logbook off the shelf and started writing before his hands could shake enough to make the handwriting useless.

Colony can now capture and reproduce active speech from proximate living chakra sources. Range unconfirmed. Duration of exposure required unconfirmed. Whether this is new capability or newly triggered capability — unconfirmed.

He underlined the last line twice.

---

Because that was the part that actually mattered.

If this was new — some fresh mutation branching off the same divergence that had given him the sixth larva’s memory integration — then it was contained, at least for now, to one control tray that had never been part of the acceleration protocol.

If it wasn’t new —

If the colony had always been capable of this, and simply never had a strong enough active signal close enough for long enough to trigger it before today —

Then every conversation he’d ever had standing near an active tray was sitting somewhere in gel, waiting for the right disturbance to come out and repeat itself.

Orochimaru’s warnings. Hiruzen’s caution. Every unguarded thing said in this lab on the assumption that the only things listening were people who’d sworn to keep it quiet.

---

The tray pulsed once more.

"— understand this now than resent me for it later," it repeated, the loop restarting on its own, same inflection, same dry weight on the same word.

Kagetsu stared at it.

Then he did the only thing that made sense.

He didn’t shut it down.

He didn’t want to lose the sample before he understood what it was.

---

He pulled a second scanner, angled it at the tray, and started a full capture — chakra signature, structural readout, vocal waveform, everything the equipment could pull before whatever this was decided to stop cooperating.

His hands had steadied by the second minute.

Fear was useless data. Kagetsu had learned that lesson a long time ago, in a body that wasn’t originally his, from a mind that had never once let panic slow down an experiment worth finishing.

---

The tray went quiet around the four-minute mark.

Not dormant — Kagetsu checked twice — just finished. Whatever cycle had triggered the playback had run its course and settled, the gel’s sheen fading back toward its normal translucent calm like nothing had happened at all.

He didn’t relax.

Because Tray Nine wasn’t the only tray in the room.

---

There were forty-one others in this wing alone.

Every one of them had been in the building during Danzo’s visit.

Every one of them had been in the building during every conversation Kagetsu had ever had about Madara, about the Hokage’s plans, about the Nine-Tails, about anything he had ever said out loud and trusted these walls to keep private.

He looked down the row of sealed containers, dozens of pale, quiet shapes suspended in gel, and understood — with the specific, cold clarity that only ever showed up right before something got much worse — that he had absolutely no idea how many of them had already been listening.

---

Somewhere down the row, a second tray’s ambient hum shifted pitch.

Then a third.

Kagetsu turned, scanner still in hand, and watched three separate containment lights flick from steady green to a slow, deliberate amber — one after another, in sequence, like something was moving down the line and switching them on as it went.
