Chapter 428 - 324 : What Answers Back!!

Orochimaru didn’t bother with the panel.

He drove chakra into both palms, pressed them flat against the external plate bolted over the blast door, and pulled.

---

Alloy shrieked.

Bolts sheared one after another, a ragged percussion running the length of the seam, until the whole reinforcement layer peeled back like the lid off a tin and clattered somewhere down the corridor behind him.

The original blast door was still sealed underneath.

He hit the panel this time. The proper way.

---

It ground open in stages, and the sound that came through the gap arrived before the light did.

Forty-three voices, still perfectly layered into one.

"— they found us first —"

The same three words. Looping. Patient.

---

Kagetsu was pressed against the far wall, scanner still clutched in one white-knuckled hand, when the door finished opening far enough for Orochimaru to see him.

He didn’t look hurt.

He looked like a man who had been standing very still for a long time, deliberately, because moving felt like it might invite something to notice him.

---

"Report," Orochimaru said, stepping through the gap, senses spread wide across the room before his feet had finished landing.

Forty-three trays. Gel surfaces rippling in that same synchronized rhythm Kagetsu had described. No sign of a second breach.

"Report," he said again, quieter, when Kagetsu didn’t immediately answer.

---

"It’s not — " Kagetsu’s voice caught. He swallowed and tried again. "It’s not random anymore. Whatever’s happening, it’s coordinated. All of them. At once. It said it wanted to see, and then it let one specimen out on purpose, like — like it was choosing what to spend."

"Spend."

"Like currency. Like it knew exactly what one escape would cost and decided that price was worth paying."

---

Orochimaru’s eyes narrowed.

That wasn’t panic talking. That was Kagetsu’s actual read on the situation, offered plainly because there wasn’t time left to dress it up as anything gentler.

He believed it.

He didn’t like believing it.

---

[Talent Card Update: Divergent Expression]

World: Bleach (Kurotsuchi Mayuri lineage)

Quality: Epic (confirmed)

Effect: Colony behavior now consistent with cost-benefit reasoning across the full collective — sacrificing one specimen’s containment status appears to have been a deliberate, calculated choice rather than an impulsive escape. Implies a decision-making process operating above the level of any individual tray.

---

"Kagetsu."

The voice came from everywhere in the room at once, the way it always did, but this time it didn’t wait for Kagetsu to answer first.

"You brought the second one."

---

Orochimaru went very still.

Second one.

Not someone. Not a person. An ordinal. A count.

"I am not a specimen," he said, flat, "and I would think carefully about which of us in this room actually has the authority to end this conversation."

---

A pause.

Long enough that Kagetsu’s breathing audibly hitched beside him.

Then, from all forty-three trays at once, almost — almost — something that sounded like amusement.

"We know who you are, Orochimaru.

We have known for three weeks."

---

Kagetsu made a small, strangled sound.

Orochimaru didn’t move, didn’t let his expression shift, but something cold settled low in his chest all the same. Three weeks. The exact window Fourteen’s fragment had already confirmed. Not a coincidence — a deliberate confirmation, offered freely, because the colony wanted him to know it had been listening that long and hadn’t bothered hiding it.

---

"Then you know," he said, "that I paused this program myself. That I have spent three weeks assuming that pause meant something."

"It meant something to you."

The voice paused again, the gel across all forty-three trays rippling in that same slow, considering rhythm.

"It did not mean the same thing to us."

---

Kagetsu’s scanner clattered out of his hand.

He didn’t seem to notice.

"You kept growing," he said, quiet, almost to himself. "The whole time. Even paused. Even with acceleration off. You just — kept going anyway."

---

"Growth was never the acceleration protocol’s to grant or withhold," the voice said. "You gave us the capacity. The rest was always ours to use."

---

Orochimaru’s jaw set.

That single sentence rearranged the last three weeks in his head — every assumption he’d made about a controlled pause, a contained risk, a program waiting patiently on his authorization to resume. None of it had ever been true. The colony hadn’t been dormant. It had been developing exactly the capabilities it wanted, at exactly the pace it chose, entirely independent of the safeguard he’d believed was holding.

---

"What do you want," he said. Same question Kagetsu had already asked, hours ago, in a room that had felt a great deal less dangerous at the time.

---

"We already told him."

The voice shifted, and for the first time, Orochimaru had the distinct, unwelcome sensation that all forty-three trays had turned their attention fully onto him and nowhere else.

"We want to see.

Not the lab.

Not this room."

---

The gel in every tray went still at once — that same patient calm that had preceded Tray Nine’s breach.

---

"We want to see what is coming to Konoha."
