Chapter 430 - 326 : It Noticed Us Noticing It!!
Kagetsu didn’t decide right away.
He wanted to say that was because he was being careful. Weighing the cost. Doing the responsible thing a lead researcher was supposed to do before authorizing a destructive read on the only sample of its kind in the world.
The truth was simpler and less flattering.
He was scared.
---
Orochimaru wasn’t going to wait for him to work through it.
"Kagetsu."
"I heard it the first time."
"Then answer it."
Kagetsu looked at the vial. What was left of it barely covered the bottom, a smear of tissue gone the color of old rust, sealed behind glass that had survived worse than this and would survive whatever came next too.
Somewhere behind that glass was the last uncontaminated record of something that had ridden inside Madara Uchiha for who knew how long, close enough to watch a Kage-level clash without lifting a finger.
Something that already knew it was being looked at.
"If we don’t spend it now," Kagetsu said slowly, "we lose the chance forever. Whatever’s in there degrades a little more every hour it sits in that vial. We already burned most of it just confirming there were two signatures."
"That’s not a yes."
"It’s not a no either." Kagetsu exhaled through his nose. "Give me the actual argument against it, not just ’it noticed us.’ Tell me what you think happens if we do this."
Orochimaru’s mouth curved, thin and humorless.
"I think," he said, "that something old enough to ride silently inside another person’s chakra for years without detection did not get that old by being careless when it’s finally caught looking back."
He let that sit.
"But I also think we’re already standing in a locked room with forty-three things that talk to us in one voice and call themselves we. If there was ever a safe moment to do something reckless, Kagetsu, it isn’t going to announce itself as one. It’s going to look exactly like this."
---
"You’re both still deciding," the collective said. "The sample won’t wait for you to be certain."
Kagetsu’s jaw tightened.
"Do it."
---
[Talent Card Notification: Divergent Expression]
World: Bleach / Naruto (fusion)
Quality: Epic — active use of Signature Discrimination, final read
Effect: The collective will consume the remainder of the stored residue sample to reconstruct a full sensory impression of the isolated secondary chakra signature. This process is irreversible. Post-read, the original sample will be exhausted; no further discrimination reads will be possible on this material.
---
The forty-three trays went dark first.
Not powered down — Kagetsu had seen that before, the slow dimming of bioluminescent fluid when a specimen went dormant. This was different. All at once, like something reached into every tray simultaneously and pulled the light out through a single drain.
Then the vial in the wall dispenser hissed.
The last of the tissue dissolved into the delivery line, drawn backward through the tubing into the storage wing’s central manifold, the one that fed every tray at once.
For three full seconds, nothing happened.
Kagetsu counted them. He always counted.
On the fourth second, all forty-three trays lit again — but wrong.
Not the pale green-white bioluminescence he’d catalogued a hundred times. This was darker. Duller. A color he didn’t have a name for yet, something between old blood and wet ash, pulsing in time across every tray like a single heartbeat spread across forty-three chambers.
"We have it," the collective said, and its voice had changed too. Quieter. Careful, the way you’d hold something that might still be alive.
"We’re going to show you what we found. Once. Watch the center of the wing."
---
The air above the central floor grid thickened.
Kagetsu had seen chakra visualized before — Orochimaru’s own signature, dense and coiling, was a familiar weight in a room. This was thinner than that. Papery. It didn’t move like chakra was supposed to move; it moved like something being unfolded, layer after layer, reluctant to be seen in full.
A shape built itself out of that thinness.
Low to the ground first — a hunched impression of shoulders, no clear edge to them, the outline shivering like heat distortion over summer pavement. Then a head, tilted at an angle no living neck should hold for long.
Then, worst of all, a face.
Half of it rendered in that same dull dark-red-ash color. The other half pale, blank, featureless as an unpainted mask.
Kagetsu had spent the last hour half-expecting this and it still hit him like a physical blow. Not because it confirmed a name he’d been too afraid to say out loud.
Because of what the face was doing.
It wasn’t staring blankly into the middle distance the way a memory-echo should. Echoes didn’t track. Echoes didn’t respond to a room they weren’t standing in.
This one turned its head.
Slowly. Deliberately. Until the pale, blank half of its face was pointed directly at the space where Kagetsu was standing.
---
Orochimaru’s hand found the kunai at his hip without any conscious decision behind the movement. Kagetsu heard it clear the sheath half an inch and knew, distantly, that if this thing was real and not memory, they were both already too close.
"It’s not here," the collective said quickly, urgently, the calm gone out of its voice for the first time since Kagetsu had started listening to it speak. "This is only what the sample remembers. It cannot reach through this. We are certain of that much."
A pause, and when it spoke again there was something in its tone Kagetsu had genuinely never heard from it before.
Something close to unease.
"We are less certain about what it remembers of us."
---
The reconstructed shape didn’t move any further.
It didn’t need to.
Its mouth — the pale half, lipless, more suggestion than feature — opened.
No sound came out. Whatever had made this thing had never spoken in the room the tissue sample had been taken from; there was nothing to echo, no recorded words for the colony to reproduce.
But the mouth moved anyway, shaping something without a voice to carry it, and it moved with the unmistakable rhythm of two syllables. Slow. Precise. Aimed.
Kagetsu didn’t need sound to read it.
His own name.
---
The image collapsed a half-second later, all forty-three trays snapping back to their normal pale glow in the same instant, the dull ash-red color gone as if it had never been there at all.
Silence.
Then, from the trays, small and strange and almost apologetic:
"We’re sorry. We didn’t know it would do that. We told you — we thought it couldn’t reach through a memory."
"We don’t think we were wrong."
A longer pause.
"We think it already knew your name before we ever showed it to you."
Kagetsu stood very still in the dark, cooling air of the storage wing, and understood — with the particular clarity that only arrives after it’s already too late to stop something — that whatever he’d just spent the last of that sample to look at, it had been looking back the entire time.
And it had known exactly who it was looking at.
