Chapter 431 - 327 : What Was Left Behind!!
Nobody spoke for a while.
The storage wing had gone back to its ordinary hum — forty-three trays breathing their pale, familiar light, the low wet clicking of the larvae shifting against glass. Ordinary. Kagetsu had never hated a sound for being ordinary before tonight.
Orochimaru finally sheathed the kunai he’d half-drawn and never used.
"Say something," he said. "You’ve gone quiet in a way I don’t like."
"I’m thinking."
"Think out loud. I’d rather know what you’re thinking than guess."
---
Kagetsu sat down on an overturned supply crate because his legs had started asking him to, politely at first and then less so.
"It mouthed my name," he said. "Not spoke. Mouthed. No sound behind it, because there was no sound in the original for the colony to reproduce — they were honest about that part, at least. Whatever we saw was built entirely out of shape and motion. No audio track to copy."
"So?"
"So a memory-echo doesn’t know how to lip-sync a name it was never taught. Meiko’s fragment repeated exact recorded phrases. Danzo’s echo repeated his exact words, word for word, because the colony had genuine audio to draw from. This had nothing. No recording of my name being said anywhere near that battlefield. I wasn’t there. Minato was. Orochimaru, you were. Rasa was. I never came anywhere close to that fight."
Orochimaru’s expression didn’t change, but Kagetsu had learned to read the small things by now — the slight stillness in his shoulders, the extra half-second before he answered.
"You’re saying it invented the motion of your name out of nothing."
"I’m saying the colony thinks it didn’t invent anything. It thinks it reproduced something that was already there in the residue, the same way it reproduces every other fragment honestly." Kagetsu pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes. "Which means either the colony is wrong about its own accuracy for the first time since this whole program started — or something in that trace already knew my name before tonight, and knew it well enough to shape a mouth around it without ever having heard it out loud."
---
"We don’t think we’re wrong," the collective said, quiet, from all forty-three trays at once. "We’ve never been wrong about a reproduction before. We don’t like being the reason you’re afraid right now. But we also don’t want to lie to make you less afraid."
Orochimaru looked at the trays for a long moment.
"That’s the most human thing you’ve ever said," he told them. "I’m not sure if that’s supposed to reassure me."
"It wasn’t meant to be either," the collective answered. "It was meant to be true."
---
The practical problems came next, because they always did, and because Kagetsu had learned a long time ago that grief and fear were luxuries you rationed out between the things that actually needed doing.
"The outer door," he said. "Whoever sealed the second layer over us — Root denied it, but somebody did it, and we still don’t know who. That’s still a problem that exists independent of everything else tonight."
Orochimaru nodded slowly, visibly grateful for a problem with edges he could actually cut.
"I can force it," he said. "Slower than the way I came in, but I won’t tear a hole straight through the main structural plate this time. Give me twenty minutes."
"And then what. We walk out and say what, exactly? ’We spent the last of Rasa’s tissue sample identifying a passenger inside Madara’s chakra and it apparently knows my name’? To who? Hiruzen doesn’t even know Madara’s identity was withheld from me in the first place — that’s still sitting there unresolved from three weeks ago."
"That," Orochimaru said, "is the actual question. Not the door. Whether we tell him tonight, in pieces, or whether we sit on this until we understand it better ourselves and risk him finding out secondhand — which, given tonight, might already be happening whether we like it or not."
He didn’t finish the thought, but he didn’t need to.
Danzo’s people had known about the storage wing’s activity before either of them had called it in. Twice now.
There was no reason to assume tonight would be the exception.

[Talent Card Status Update: Divergent Expression]
World: Bleach / Naruto (fusion)
Quality: Epic — stable
Status: Signature Discrimination sub-capability shows no active output since the Ch. 326 read. Source material (the tissue sample) is fully exhausted. Whether this sub-capability can resurface on future samples, or was a one-time expression tied specifically to that trace, is currently unknown and untestable without a comparable source.

Kagetsu stood up, joints stiff from sitting too long on an overturned crate in a room that had tried very hard to kill his sense of safety tonight.
"We tell him," he said. "Not everything. Not the part where I think it already knew me — I don’t have proof of that yet, just a feeling, and Hiruzen doesn’t need my feelings, he needs facts he can act on. We tell him the colony’s capability escalated, we tell him what we found in the sample, and we tell him there may be a second entity connected to Madara that nobody’s accounted for. That part isn’t a feeling. That part is real, and it’s bigger than either of us deciding to carry it alone."
Orochimaru studied him for a moment, something unreadable behind his eyes.
"You’ve changed your answer on withholding things," he said. "Three weeks ago you were the one being kept in the dark. Now you’re the one deciding what someone else gets to know."
"I noticed that too," Kagetsu said. "I don’t love it. But I’d rather be uncomfortable about it than repeat the exact mistake that got made on me."
---
He rolled his sleeve down without thinking about it, an old habit from years in the lab, and the motion caught wrong against his forearm.
He looked down.
There was a mark on the inside of his wrist that hadn’t been there an hour ago.
Small. Faint, the color of the same dull ash-red the reconstruction had worn across half its face, barely visible unless the light caught it at the right angle — which it had, just now, under the storage wing’s cold overheads.
He hadn’t been touched. Nobody had touched him. He’d stood on the far side of the room the entire time, well clear of the central floor grid where the reconstruction had formed and collapsed.
He pressed two fingers against it. It didn’t hurt.
It was warm.
"Orochimaru."
His voice came out steadier than he felt, which took more effort than he wanted to admit.
"I need you to look at something."
Orochimaru crossed the room in three steps, and whatever he saw on Kagetsu’s wrist was enough to make him go very, very still.
"That wasn’t there before the read," the collective said, and for the second time tonight, its voice held something that wasn’t calm.
"We would have told you if we’d seen it happen. We didn’t see it happen."
"We don’t know when it did."
