Chapter 432 - 328 : Under The Skin!!

"Don’t touch it again."

Orochimaru’s voice had gone flat in the specific way it did right before he stopped asking and started deciding things for other people.

Kagetsu pulled his fingers back from his own wrist anyway, a half-second too late to count as obedience.

"It’s not spreading," he said. "I’ve been watching it since you noticed. Same size it was five minutes ago."

"That’s not the part that worries me."

---

They moved to the analysis bench along the far wall, the one Kagetsu kept clear of biological material specifically so he’d always have somewhere clean to work when things went wrong. He’d used it more in the last two weeks than in the two years before that combined.

He didn’t let himself think about what that meant.

Orochimaru caught his wrist — carefully, two fingers either side of the mark, no direct contact with the skin itself — and angled it under the bench light.

Up close, the color wasn’t uniform.

It had a grain to it. Faint striations running through the ash-red, like the mark wasn’t a stain sitting on top of his skin but something laid into it in layers, the way a tattoo built color in passes.

"Talk to me," Orochimaru said. "Sensation. Anything."

"Warm. I told you that already."

"Warmer than a moment ago?"

Kagetsu paused, actually checking instead of answering on reflex.

"...Maybe. A little."

Orochimaru’s jaw tightened.

---

"May we look."

The voice came from all forty-three trays, quieter than usual, almost hesitant — which was itself unusual enough that Kagetsu glanced up before answering.

"Look how."

"The way we looked at the sample. We don’t know if it will work on living tissue the same way it worked on residue. We’ve never tried. We’re asking first."

Orochimaru’s eyes flicked to Kagetsu, a silent question passed between them without a word spoken.

Your call. It’s your arm.

Kagetsu thought about Ch. 326 — about a sample that had cost them their only lead, spent entirely to answer one question and raising three more instead. He thought about a colony that had just, for the first time since this whole nightmare started, asked permission before doing something to him rather than simply doing it and explaining after.

That mattered. He decided it mattered.

"Do it slow," he said. "And if it hurts, or if I tell you to stop, you stop immediately. No hesitation, no ’we’re already committed.’ Stop."

"Understood. We would not have asked if we intended to ignore the answer."

[Talent Card Notification: Divergent Expression]

World: Bleach / Naruto (fusion)

Quality: Epic — active use, novel application

Effect: Attempting Signature Discrimination on living tissue for the first time. Prior uses were limited to inert residue samples. Outcome and safety on a living subject are unconfirmed. Proceeding at reduced intensity per Kagetsu’s instruction.

The pull was gentle at first.

Kagetsu felt it the way you feel a hand hovering an inch above your skin without touching it — pressure that wasn’t quite pressure, attention that had weight even without contact.

Then the mark responded.

Not to the colony’s chakra reaching toward it.

To itself.

The ash-red grain in his skin brightened, faint, then less faint, then bright enough that Orochimaru swore under his breath and Kagetsu felt something under the mark shift — not pain exactly, more like a muscle he’d never known he had suddenly remembering it existed.

"Stop pulling back," the collective said, urgent now, no hesitation left in it at all. "We’re not doing that. That’s not us."

"Then what—"

The mark answered the question before Kagetsu could finish asking it.

---

It didn’t hurt.

That was somehow the worst part. Kagetsu had braced for pain, had every muscle in his arm ready to flinch away from it, and instead what came was almost gentle — a warmth spreading outward from his wrist toward his palm and up toward his elbow, slow and deliberate, like ink finding the grain of paper.

He watched, frozen, as thin lines of that same ash-red color traced themselves across the back of his hand.

Not randomly.

In a shape.

A small, precise, unmistakably deliberate shape, no wider than a coin, resolving itself against his skin with the patience of something that had all the time in the world and had simply been waiting for the right moment to use it.

An eye.

Closed. Lashes rendered in fine, careful lines. Positioned exactly where his own knuckle would flex, so that when he made a fist, it would open.

---

"Kagetsu."

Orochimaru’s voice had lost every trace of its earlier flatness. What was underneath it, Kagetsu had heard maybe twice before in all the years he’d known the man — once during the Ch. 313 clash, once when Danzo had first walked into this lab uninvited.

Genuine alarm.

"Don’t make a fist."

"I wasn’t planning to."

"We need to stop," the collective said, and this time there was no ambiguity in its tone at all, nothing careful or measured left in it. "We need to stop now. This isn’t residue responding to us."

"This is something responding to being found."

---

The warmth reached his elbow and kept going.

Kagetsu forced himself to breathe evenly, to keep his hand open, fingers spread wide and still, every part of him screaming to just close it and see what happened and every rational part of him screaming louder that this was exactly the kind of curiosity that got people killed in labs just like this one.

Orochimaru’s grip on his wrist tightened, not painfully, but absolute — an anchor, or a warning, Kagetsu genuinely couldn’t tell which.

"Whatever this is," Orochimaru said, low, controlled, every word deliberate, "it’s been sitting quiet under your skin since the moment that reconstruction ended. It let us examine it. It let the colony reach toward it. It waited."

He looked up, and for once his eyes weren’t unreadable at all.

"It wanted us to look."

The closed eye on the back of Kagetsu’s hand didn’t move.

It didn’t need to.

He could feel it anyway — a pressure behind his own eyes that had nothing to do with fear, a certainty settling into his chest with the cold, absolute weight of something that had just become true and could never be untrue again.

Somewhere, on the other side of whatever this mark actually was, something had just opened its own eye to match.
