Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 433 - 329 : Something Looked Back!!

The feeling didn’t fade.

Kagetsu had expected it to. Fear did that, usually — spiked hard, then bled out over a minute or two once the immediate danger passed. This didn’t behave like fear.

It behaved like being watched.

"Orochimaru."

"I’m still here."

"Something’s looking at me. I don’t mean the mark. I mean — through it. Past it."

---

Orochimaru didn’t let go of his wrist, but his head turned, sharp, toward the trays.

"Can you confirm that," he said. It wasn’t really a question. It was an order dressed politely enough to still be one.

"We can’t confirm what he’s feeling," the collective said. "We can confirm what we’re seeing. The mark’s chakra signature just changed."

"It’s no longer matching the residue trace from the sample. It’s diverged. It’s become its own thing."

[Talent Card Notification: Divergent Expression]

World: Bleach / Naruto (fusion)

Quality: Epic — passive observation

Effect: The mark on Kagetsu’s arm no longer registers as residual chakra consistent with the consumed Suna-battlefield sample. It now presents as an active, independent chakra signature, distinct in character from anything the colony has catalogued to date. Classification: unknown. Threat assessment: undetermined.

---

Kagetsu closed his eyes.

He didn’t mean to. It wasn’t a decision so much as something pulling his eyelids down the way gravity pulled a dropped weight, gentle and absolute and impossible to argue with.

Behind them, darkness — and then not darkness. A texture to it. Grain, the same grain he’d seen in the mark itself, stretched out into something too large to be skin, too formless to be a room.

He was somewhere. Not physically. He understood that much even as it happened, the same way you understand you’re dreaming without waking up from it.

And something was there with him.

---

It didn’t have a shape yet, not the way the reconstruction had. It was closer to weather than to a person — pressure without edges, presence without a face to put the presence behind.

But it noticed him. That much was unmistakable, immediate, total.

There you are.

The words weren’t spoken. Kagetsu had no ears here, no air to carry sound. They simply arrived, already understood, the way a memory arrives instead of being heard.

He tried to answer and found he had no voice either. Only the fact of himself, standing — if standing was even the word — in a space built out of the same color that had crawled up his arm.

You found the piece we left behind. Good. That means the piece is doing its work.

---

"Kagetsu!"

Orochimaru’s voice cut through from somewhere very far away, distorted, slowed down, a sound heard from underwater.

Kagetsu didn’t have the ability to respond to it here. He wasn’t sure he had the ability to respond to anything here. Whatever this was, it hadn’t asked his permission to include him in the conversation. It had simply reached out and found him already listening, the way you’d find a door left unlocked.

You’re afraid. That’s reasonable. You should be.

You should also understand — this isn’t an attack. If it were an attack, you would already know, and you would not be capable of being afraid, because fear requires a future, and I would not have left you one.

This is an introduction.

---

The pressure shifted, and for one fractured instant Kagetsu felt — not saw, felt, the way you feel a shape in the dark by the space it doesn’t occupy — something enormous folded down small enough to fit into the space where they stood together. Massive and coiled and patient, the way a held breath is patient.

And beside it, closer, smaller, more present: the shape he’d already seen once, reconstructed and mouthing his name in a room three states removed from wherever this actually was.

Split-faced. Half dark. Half blank.

He wanted you to see him properly, once. Not a memory. Not residue. This.

Consider it done.

---

The mark on Kagetsu’s arm burned — not painfully, but suddenly, a wave of heat that broke through whatever membrane had been holding him inside this place, and he felt himself yanked backward, fast, the way water pulls back off a beach right before something worse arrives.

"KAGETSU."

The collective’s voice, all forty-three trays at once, loud enough to hurt, loud enough to be the last thing that reached him before his eyes opened again to the storage wing’s cold overhead lights and Orochimaru’s face inches from his own, gripping both his shoulders now, wrist forgotten entirely.

"You were gone," Orochimaru said, and his voice — steady, controlled, unshakeable Orochimaru — was not steady at all. "Ten seconds. Your eyes were open. You didn’t blink. You didn’t breathe."

Kagetsu’s whole body was shaking. He hadn’t noticed until just now.

"It talked to me," he managed.

"What did it say."

He looked down at his arm. The eye pattern on the back of his hand hadn’t spread any further — but it had changed.

It was open now.

"It said this was an introduction," Kagetsu whispered. "It said he wanted me to see him properly."

Behind them, all forty-three trays dimmed at once, in perfect unison, and the collective’s voice came through smaller than Kagetsu had ever heard it.

"Something just left a trace in our containment field. It wasn’t here a moment ago."

"It’s the same signature. The one from your arm."

"It’s inside the storage wing with us."
