Chapter 342: It will be entertaining

The house was unusually quiet.

Luke sat at the table alongside his mate, while Ginna and her daughter sat across from them, the four remaining in comfortable silence.

Laila was exhausted and had already gone to sleep. Lex and Gustav were outside, patrolling the village now that their guests had finally arrived. As for Terek, he had remained in his room with his mate.

Luke wasn’t particularly worried about the two. He was perfectly content to leave the bear to deal with his mate on his own.

A woman who could be so fierce when making demands and willingly offer herself during intimacy was hardly as depressed as Terek believed her to be.

She was simply thirsty, and hopefully, their earlier session had done something to ease that thirst.

"Luke, when are we moving out?" Ginna asked, breaking him from his thoughts.

"I told Gary before leaving the village to help me move my things. But now that his attention is occupied with the guests, I doubt he’ll be able to spare the time."

"That’s understandable," Monica said. "Every man capable of fighting is focused on maintaining the village’s perimeter. Should we wait another day?"

Luke shrugged. "We can do it ourselves, can’t we? Leave the heavy things to me. For the smaller ones, I suppose you two and Laila should be enough. Unless you think it’s too much work?"

He was prepared to handle everything himself if necessary. He simply didn’t want them to feel burdened, especially since he might have sounded a little too eager to move out.

Ginna shook her head. "Barely any work at all. Most of what needs to be moved is in your room. There isn’t much in Laila’s room either, so I believe the three of us can handle it."

Monica nodded. "True. Though we will need to buy a few things first. A hearth, a table, cooking tools, and things for the bathing area."

"Then do that tomorrow and start moving out the day after."

Dalia suddenly spoke, offering her own opinion.

Luke raised his brows in surprise.

She immediately averted her gaze before speaking in a quieter voice.

"Let me have my mother for just one more day."

Luke couldn’t help but chuckle at how meekly she had said it. Monica merely grinned, while Ginna smiled helplessly at her daughter.

Dalia’s face grew even redder.

"Is it really too much to ask, Mother? I never stopped you before. But if the situation has given us the opportunity to spend another day together, why rush to separate earlier?"

Ginna sighed before looking toward Luke, silently asking for his opinion.

Luke simply shrugged.

"Your call. I’m fine with either day."

He wasn’t being disturbed by Terek at the moment, so spending one extra day here wasn’t a problem. His intention to move out, however, remained completely unchanged.

Ginna and Monica exchanged a glance before the latter spoke.

"The day after tomorrow, then. Gary should be able to lend us a few people by then, so Luke won’t have to handle the heavy lifting himself."

Luke chuckled. "There is barely anything heavy left in this house. But I understand."

Disassembling the bed and moving the hearth would require more than brute strength. It was the kind of work that demanded experience and patience. He would simply let the others handle it and compensate them afterward.

Not long after, someone knocked on the door.

"It’s Dart. I’ll go see him. You all continue."

Luke was already on his feet. He could hear the man’s muffled muttering from outside, and judging by his voice, Dart sounded nervous.

Wiping his hands with a piece of cloth, Luke opened the door.

As expected, a familiar gentle giant stood outside, a troubled expression etched across his face.

"Everything alright? Did something happen?" Luke asked. He then stepped aside. "Want to come in? We were having a meal."

Dart offered a polite smile before shaking his head.

"I’m fine, and... sorry for disturbing you. But there’s something you need to do for a friend today."

Luke hummed, his eyes narrowing slightly.

"What got you so worked up? Tell me."

Dart took a deep breath before finally speaking.

"The chief has asked you to come to his house. He wants to introduce you to the Tribal Lord."

"..." Luke had expected something like this, just not so soon.

"Can I decline?" he asked with a tired sigh. "I’m rather exhausted, you see."

Dart placed both hands on Luke’s shoulders.

"Please, Luke... This is the first time the chief has ever given me a direct order. He expects me to handle this, to bring you there."

"And you don’t know why he chose you?" Luke asked, shaking his head with a resigned sigh.

Dart groaned.

"I know exactly why, and that just shows how much he trusts our friendship. So... won’t you come with me? Please?"

Watching the towering man shrink himself down so much just to have his request granted was both endearing and strangely pitiful.

In the end, Luke could only shrug.

"Fine. I’ll come. But whatever happens after that isn’t my responsibility."

Dart immediately perked up, his face lighting up with relief. He was so elated that he barely registered the rest of Luke’s words.

"Then let’s get going."

Luke chuckled. "Let me tell them first."

He stepped back inside and called out, "I’m heading out for a while. Want me to bring anything on my way back?"

Monica nodded. "Something sweet?"

Luke grinned.

"Got it."

A moment later, he stepped out of the house with Dart by his side.

As they walked, Dart glanced at Luke.

"What did you mean when you mentioned responsibility earlier, Luke?"

Luke smiled helplessly.

"You’ll see once we get there."

If his instincts were right, things were about to get rather messy for Baldon.

The chief had practically invited his own disaster into the house in the form of Luke.

Well, at least it’ll be entertaining to watch.
