He looked at her with genuine warmth, his gaze gentle and devoid of any sharpness. It made her feel less awkward and tense.

Chloe Reed gently pursed her lips. She lowered her gaze and typed, and a cold, electronic female voice spoke. "My life is too complicated. Getting too involved with me might bring you trouble."

Preston Vance pondered for a moment, then asked, "Like that time Ann was locked in the building?"

Chloe Reed nodded.

Preston Vance said, "That does sound like a lot of trouble."

’It would be good if he knew to back down when things get tough,’ Chloe thought.

"But I’ve gotten used to living abroad. I like a challenge, something with a bit of a thrill. In fact, I’m rather looking forward to seeing what these so-called dangers and troubles you mentioned are." Preston Vance’s sudden change in topic completely threw her off.

She stared at him, her expression dazed.

Preston Vance continued, "Chloe, what Ivy Vance did before was out of line. I completely understand why you’d distance yourself from me and be on your guard. I’ve already handled it. Ivy won’t appear before you again, and I won’t bring you any trouble or distress. Lately, I keep thinking about the times when we were friends. Can’t you stop being so wary of me?"

He was so sincere, so earnest that Chloe Reed found it impossible to refuse him. It was as if another word of rejection from her would make him reveal a sad, dejected expression.

Chloe Reed felt conflicted. It wasn’t a pleasant feeling.

Besides, Preston Vance had just arranged for someone to help her. If she coldly rejected him now, she would seem ungrateful.

She lowered her gaze and typed. A moment later, the electronic female voice spoke. "Then accept the money transfer."

Hearing this, Preston Vance immediately broke into a smile. He accepted the transfer right in front of her, then said, "The signature dishes at this restaurant are quite good. You’re taking traditional Chinese medicine right now, aren’t you? Are there any foods you need to avoid?"

Chloe Reed typed, "I’ll ask my doctor."

"Okay."

Fiona Linton listed a bunch of things she couldn’t eat, so she simply sent the list to Preston Vance.

After reading it, Preston Vance said, "Alright. A few dishes happen to fit your requirements perfectly."

He called over a waiter and began to order.

By the end of the meal, the sense of distance between them had lessened considerably. As they were heading downstairs, Preston Vance said, "Let’s go buy the medicinal herbs now. When you get back, you can have your doctor see if they’re suitable."

Chloe Reed nodded.

When they arrived at Jardinelle, Preston Vance got out of the car with her. He handed her the bag and said gently, "Go home and get some rest. Don’t overthink things. Your voice will definitely get better."

Chloe Reed nodded, then typed, "Get home safe. Thank you."

Preston Vance sighed helplessly. "Don’t be so formal. It’s like we’re strangers."

Chloe Reed was about to type something else when Dylan Finch walked over. "Ma’am, you’re back. Mr. Grant is... not doing well right now."

Chloe Reed turned and looked at him, confused.

Dylan Finch said, "He says his eyes hurt."

Hearing this, Chloe Reed’s expression changed instantly. Without even a word of farewell to Preston Vance, she turned and hurried toward the villa.

Seeing this, Preston Vance was momentarily stunned.

"Mr. Vance."

Dylan Finch greeted him politely. He took a couple of steps, then suddenly turned back to add, "Mr. Grant and Ma’am are on very good terms right now."

Preston Vance’s expression returned to calm. "Isn’t that a good thing?"

Dylan Finch looked at him and said, "You’re Ma’am’s friend, Mr. Vance. You must want her to be happy too, right?"
