Chapter 721: Recovered?
His scent enveloped her, like an impenetrable wall that made it hard for her to breathe. Her own breathing grew ragged.
She gripped her phone tightly and squeezed her eyes shut, feeling the light touch of his lips against the corner of her mouth. She then opened her eyes and began to type.
Her phone wasn’t on silent, and the crisp sound of the keyboard tapping echoed in the quiet night. The man kissing her froze, his breaths puffing against her cheek.
A moment later, a cold, electronic female voice sounded out, "I’m tired. I want to sleep."
Her rejection was perfectly clear.
Walker Grant’s breathing grew heavier. He reached out, wanting to grab her hand to stop her from typing, but he knew that would only make things worse.
He buried his head in the crook of her neck, his breath warming her skin. His voice was muffled as he said, "I just wanted you to taste the lychee candy."
She didn’t type again, but her refusal was still obvious.
Walker Grant slid off her and lay down at her side, his arm still draped over her. "How about we sleep like this?" he asked. "I promise I won’t try anything."
Chloe Reed ignored him, pulling the covers up as her breathing gradually evened out.
In the darkness, the man’s breath was hot, and a certain part of him grew even hotter, aching uncomfortably.
He endured it for a long time, but finally, he couldn’t take it anymore. He gave her a forceful kiss, then got up and fumbled his way to the bathroom.
Chloe Reed was drifting in a hazy sleep when she felt the bed dip beside her. A moment later, the man, radiating a faint chill, moved closer.
She woke up a little, her lovely brow furrowing as she opened her eyes to look at him.
"Did I wake you?"
Walker Grant detected her heavier breathing and knew she was awake. Facing her, he said resignedly, "I was too uncomfortable to sleep. I’m sorry."
Chloe Reed: "..."
She grabbed her phone to type.
But he pressed her hand down. "I promise I won’t wake you again," he said. "Go to sleep."
He could already guess what she was going to type. ’She must want to leave.’
’No way! That’s not happening!’
’She absolutely can’t leave. She has to stay with me.’
Chloe Reed pushed his hand away, rolled over, and tried to sleep.
This time, Walker Grant didn’t dare move any closer, afraid his own aching discomfort would get the better of him and he’d end up waking her again.
"..."
「The next day.」
Chloe Reed coughed up another mouthful of black blood. She hurried to get Fiona Linton and show her.
Fiona Linton had just finished freshening up for the day. She carefully examined the black blood, then looked at Chloe Reed. "Chloe," she said, "try to speak. See if you can make a sound."
Chloe Reed froze for a moment. She opened her mouth, but she hadn’t spoken in so long. The thought of the awful sound she might make stole her courage.
Fiona encouraged her, "Don’t be afraid. Be brave. You’re already recovering!"
Chloe Reed took a deep breath and then tried to make a sound.
"Ahhh..."
The sound that came out was still grating and hoarse, as if her vocal cords were being torn apart. It was a horrible noise.
"That’s not right." Fiona Linton stroked her chin. "The toxins are almost completely purged. Even if you can’t get back to how you were before, you should be at least halfway recovered by now."
Chloe Reed pressed her lips together, her face pale. Her clear eyes were filled with disappointment and sadness.
"Don’t worry, let me take your pulse!" Fiona quickly grabbed her hand, sat her down on the sofa, and began to check it carefully.
