Chapter 751: Raising the Price
Walker Grant stood there with his head slightly bowed, looking like a scolded child, not daring to talk back.
Fiona Linton couldn’t contain her glee. "That’s what you get for putting on an act. Hehehe."
Chloe Reed looked toward the servants, then typed on her phone. Its robotic voice announced, "If this ever happens again, you are not to let him go outside. If he catches a cold, I’m docking your pay."
The servants were speechless.
To be fair, they were in an impossible position.
They were both masters of the house. Who were they supposed to listen to?
"I was wrong."
Walker Grant apologized readily, his tone utterly sincere. "Chloe, please don’t be angry."
Seeing how readily he admitted his mistake, Chloe Reed didn’t press the issue. She pulled him over to sit on the sofa, then typed on her phone. "I’m going to go change," the phone announced.
"Okay."
He listened to Chloe’s footsteps fade into the distance, until he heard a door close upstairs.
Walker Grant turned his head slightly to face Fiona Linton. "Let’s make a deal."
Fiona Linton’s tone was icy. "What about?"
Walker Grant said, "I’ll add another ten million. In exchange, you say good things about me in front of her."
Hearing this, Fiona Linton’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Have you lost your mind?"
Walker Grant continued, "And if she doesn’t end up divorcing me, I’ll add another ten million on top of that."
Fiona Linton gasped.
’This guy really knows how to throw his money around!’
She bit her finger, completely torn.
’What should I do?’
’This is such a hard choice.’
’That’s so much money!’
Walker Grant’s tone was nonchalant. "You can take your time to think it over. I’ve got all the time in the world."
Fiona Linton wrestled with the decision for a moment before saying, "Let’s get one thing straight. I’ll take your money, but I will not do anything to hurt Chloe. And I won’t go against my conscience and just praise you blindly."
Walker Grant grunted in agreement. "Fine."
Fiona Linton wavered again. "Just... let me think about it."
’All I have to do is flap my gums and say a few harmlessly nice things, and I could earn tens of millions.’
’No matter how you look at it, it’s a great deal.’
’Argh... This is too difficult.’
"..."
Chloe Reed changed her clothes and went to her grandmother’s room.
Her grandmother was sitting in a chair, gazing out the window at the gray-white sky. Her hair seemed to have grown a few shades whiter, the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes and brows a little deeper.
When she saw Chloe, her sorrowful expression softened slightly. "When did you get back?"
Chloe Reed sat down beside her and typed on her phone. "Just now," the phone’s voice said. "How long have you been sitting here?"
Her grandmother hesitated for a few seconds before replying, "Not long. I couldn’t sleep, so I was just watching the snow. But it’s not coming down very hard."
Chloe could detect a note of sadness in her grandmother’s voice. ’She’s probably not watching the snow,’ she thought. ’She’s thinking about Autumn Linton.’
Chloe lowered her gaze, her long lashes trembling. After a moment’s hesitation, she typed out a sentence. A cold, electronic female voice filled the air. "Grandma, did you really never blame her?"
’When she found out her own daughter had poisoned her, did she not feel even a shred of resentment?’
"How could I not have?" Her grandmother’s voice was aged and slow. "But what could I do? The only thing I can do is try not to think about it, not to dwell on it. But I don’t hate her. I just hope... in our next lives, we aren’t mother and daughter. I don’t know how to be a mother, and she wasn’t a proper daughter."
At that moment, Chloe’s heart ached for her grandmother.
’An unfaithful husband when she was young, a disloyal daughter... and now that she’s old, she doesn’t even have the energy to hold a grudge. Her whole life has been so difficult.’
Chloe didn’t type anything else. Instead, she just sat with her grandmother, watching the gray-white sky, letting all the emotions in her heart drain away.
