Chapter 401 - 399: Just a Little Bit of Effort
"Go catch some?" Before Celeste Grant could even speak, his figure flickered and vanished. He had already entered the mountain range below.
’A centipede going to catch other centipedes? Is he serious?’
The couple exchanged a look but said nothing. Their son, Aaron Sinclair, who was standing by the grill, brought over the roasted rabbit. He casually pulled out a dagger, began slicing the meat onto a plate, and pushed it in front of Celeste Grant and his father.
"Dad, Mom, eat up while it’s hot."
"Thanks, son." Celeste Grant smiled and pulled Javier Sinclair to sit down at the table. The rabbit meat on the plate sizzled, glistening with rendered fat. It looked absolutely delicious. "Let’s eat."
She picked up a piece of sliced meat with her chopsticks and put it in her mouth. The flavor was simply divine. "This is delicious! Darling, you have to try some." As she spoke, she picked up another piece and held it to Javier Sinclair’s lips.
He opened his mouth to eat it, then gave a slight nod. "Not bad. It’s cooked perfectly."
"Well then, you have some more," she said, her gaze shifting to her son. He was picking up several skewers of meat, walking over to the grill, and placing them on the rack. He was going to keep cooking. This time, it wasn’t rabbit meat, but something else.
Celeste Grant called out to him.
"Son, come eat first. You can grill later. There’s no rush."
Standing at the grill, Aaron Sinclair turned slightly, smiling and waving at his parents. "Mom, you two go ahead and eat. I’ll finish grilling these and eat in a bit. Dad, what do you want? I’ll grill it for you. Mom, want me to make a few skewers of cabbage?"
Javier Sinclair replied, "Anything is fine with me."
Celeste Grant smiled and said, "Sure! I skewered a lot of cabbage earlier. Grill it all for me."
"Okay, Mom, just a moment. I’ll get them on the grill for you now."
A smile spread across Celeste Grant’s face as she watched her son busying himself at the grill. ’It really is nice having a son to take care of you,’ she mused, ’even though I’m not old yet.’
She glanced down at the plate of neatly sliced rabbit. She picked out the meatiest piece, the leg, and placed it in an empty bowl. "Come over and eat this leg before you go back."
"Alright." Aaron Sinclair walked over, picked up the leg, and began eating it immediately. Then he returned to the grill to continue turning the skewers.
A short while later, a massive green centipede scrambled up over the edge of the cliff. In the blink of an eye, it transformed into a man. He carried a Flame Antelope over one shoulder, and with his other hand, he dragged a black, pointy-headed centipede that was over three meters long.
He tossed his quarry to the ground and ran over happily. "Master, I’m back!"
Sprout stopped in front of Javier Sinclair, pointed to the centipede on the ground, and said, "Master, what do you think of this one? Does it look appetizing?"
At that moment, the sight of the centipede on the ground made Celeste Grant choke.
As it turned out, Sprout had been completely serious.
Javier Sinclair raised his eyes, his gaze shifting from Sprout to the centipede on the ground. ’Hideous.’ "I’ve changed my mind," he said. "You can have it yourself." ’He had only been making a casual remark; his tastes weren’t *that* extreme, and he had no real desire to eat a grilled centipede. Who would have thought this simple-minded creature would actually go and catch one for him.’
Sprout raised a hand and scratched his head, unable to comprehend. ’One minute my master wants to eat it, the next he doesn’t. So, does he want it or not?’
’Whatever, I’ll just grill it first.’
"Young Master, I need another grill!"
Celeste Grant turned her head to glance at Sprout. He pointed at the centipede on the ground. "You’re going to grill the centipede?"
Thinking his young master was implying he didn’t know how, Sprout puffed out his chest and said, "Young Master, I learned just by watching you all grill before. I can do it too!"
"Heh heh..." Aaron Sinclair let out a dry laugh, his gaze falling on the black centipede, which lay on the ground with its eyes wide open. "This isn’t about whether you know how. That centipede... it’s your own kind, isn’t it? And you’re going to grill it?"
At these words, Sprout grew pensive for a moment before coming to a conclusion. He pointed at the centipede on the ground and explained, "Young Master, I’m a local centipede. I might have mutated, but my people are red and have round heads. See? This centipede is black and has a pointy head. We’re not the same breed. This is a foreign species, different from us. When food is scarce, they’re just food for our clan."
Celeste Grant, who was sitting to the side, sighed to herself.
’They’re both centipedes, but apparently there’s a difference.’
’A local centipede... Hahahaha!’ Celeste Grant couldn’t help but laugh. But she also knew that compared to Humanity, the laws of survival among Demonic Beasts were far more brutal.
And so, Sprout joined the barbecue brigade.
However... his barbecuing skills were mediocre at best. Everything was burnt! No matter what he cooked, he burned it, filling the air with the smell of acrid smoke. So much for puffing his chest out and claiming he’d learned just by watching. After trying it himself, he finally realized that watching and doing were two very different things.
Standing off to the side, Aaron Sinclair burst out laughing. "Hahaha! You burned it! Sprout, didn’t you just say you already knew how to do it?"
Sprout stared at the blackened meat in disbelief. He looked at the fragrant skewers his young master was grilling, then back at his own creations. He finally had to admit that he had spoken too soon.
’How could this be?’ he wondered. ’I saw the young master do it just like this. Why does everything turn black in my hands?’
"It’s alright, it’s alright! If it’s burnt, it’s burnt!" Celeste Grant laughed as she ate her own food. "Don’t be discouraged, Sprout. You were a Spirit Beast and only took human form a short time ago. You’ll get the hang of it after a few more tries."
Looking at the centipede-boy with his twitching antennae, Celeste Grant clicked her tongue in amusement. ’A centipede working a grill. Can you believe it?’ she thought. ’Then again, this is the Cultivation World. I guess I have to.’
"I’ll do my best to learn, Mistress."
Sprout’s true form was a Demonic Beast, so he would eat anything. He could happily devour raw meat, to say nothing of something merely burnt to a crisp. In the end, it was Sprout who ate the charred centipede. Not only that, but he polished off the entire Flame Antelope as well.
With a full belly, Sprout reverted to his true form and lay down nearby to bask in the sun. He was a colossal centipede, his body shimmering like a green jewel in the sunlight. He had probably grown so used to being a centipede that he still wasn’t quite comfortable with his new human form.
As for Celeste Grant and her family, they set up lounge chairs in front of their bamboo house, seizing a rare moment of leisure. All three of them lay back, soaking up the sun.
Celeste Grant tilted her head slightly to look at her son. "Son, how long has it been? Your cultivation is already at the Mahayana Realm. You’re progressing incredibly fast."
Aaron Sinclair laced his hands behind his head, using them as a pillow. He watched the clouds drift across the sky and said lightly, "Well, your son just tries a little, you know. You’re the really incredible one, Mom. I can’t even sense your cultivation level at all."
Celeste Grant laughed. "Haha, well, your mom is at the Transcendance Tribulation Stage now. You’ll have to work hard to catch up, son."
Aaron Sinclair held up his hand. "Mom, you’re so amazing! Just as expected of my fair-skinned, beautiful, smart, and gentle mother. I’ll give you a heart."
Watching the mother and son flatter each other, Javier Sinclair, who was lying next to Celeste Grant, felt the corners of his lips curl into a small smile.
’So this is what it feels like to have a family,’ he thought. ’It’s nice.’
