Chapter 440 - 438: This Statue Is Looking More and More Familiar
At this moment, festive lanterns hung by the door of every household.
The entire village was decked out in lights and decorations, creating a lively atmosphere. As her gaze swept over the scene, she couldn’t help but murmur, "It looks so festive."
A single glance revealed all the villagers gathered in an open area not far from the large stone block in the center of the village. The strong young men, dressed in identical short tunics, had gongs and drums at the ready, as did the young women, who wore flower wreaths in their hair and beautiful dresses. They were all preparing for today’s sacrificial ceremony.
Among the young women was Madam Forrest’s daughter, Lily Paxton. When she saw Celeste Grant come out, she quickly called to her, waving hello.
"Miss Grant."
"Lily."
Celeste Grant offered a small smile and waved back at her.
Just as they spoke, Madam Forrest walked over from the side. She said with a smile, "Celeste, you’re up. How are you feeling today? If you feel any discomfort, you must tell us right away."
Celeste Grant smiled and said, "I will, Madam Forrest. Thank you for your concern. I feel fine right now, no discomfort at all."
"That’s good." She replied, then said, "Come, come, look at the flower wreath I wove for you. I even added a few festive little red flowers here. Wear this, and the God will protect you during the ceremony."
Celeste Grant was touched by her words. She had arrived in this place by accident, with no family or friends, yet the villagers were incredibly kind to her. Whenever they made something good to eat or drink, they would invite her to join them. It wasn’t just a polite gesture; they genuinely and warmly welcomed her.
This was especially true of Madam Forrest and her family, who truly treated her as one of their own.
In truth, based on her actual age, Celeste Grant was as old as the village elders. Even her son was several years older than Madam Forrest.
But the villagers living here were just ordinary people who had never practiced Cultivation. Celeste Grant currently looked like she was eighteen or nineteen—young and beautiful. Who would have guessed she was actually in her seventies or eighties?
’Even if I told them, they wouldn’t believe me. So, I might as well just keep playing the part of a junior,’ she thought.
Looking at Madam Forrest, Celeste Grant was reminded of her own parents in the Cultivation World.
"Thank you, Madam Forrest." She took Madam Forrest’s arm, making sure to praise her craftsmanship. "You’re so skilled, Madam. This wreath is beautiful."
Madam Forrest was pleased. She reached out and patted Celeste’s shoulder, smiling. "I’m glad you like it. I was worried you wouldn’t."
"How could I not? I love it. The wreath you wove is gorgeous," Celeste Grant said with a smile. "The last person who wove a flower wreath for me was my husband." At this, she lowered her head slightly and couldn’t help but sigh.
Since arriving here, Celeste Grant naturally hadn’t told them she had ascended from the Lower Realm; they wouldn’t have understood anyway. She had only said that she’d entered this place by chance and had been accidentally separated from her child’s father.
So, when she heard Celeste Grant mention her child’s father, Madam Forrest, afraid she would be sad, couldn’t help but comfort her. "It’s all right, don’t worry, Celeste. The God will protect you. I believe it won’t be long before you and your husband are reunited. Your family will be together again soon."
Celeste Grant gave a small smile.
"Yes, I think so too."
She wasn’t worried about never seeing Javier Sinclair again. Even if she didn’t go looking for him, he would find his way to her sooner or later. So, they were bound to meet again eventually. The only regret was that their child was due soon, and he wasn’t here.
It wasn’t that Celeste Grant was being sentimental, but having him by her side always made her feel at ease.
As they spoke, the village’s ceremony began with great fanfare.
Celeste Grant wasn’t from the village, and her large belly made it inconvenient for her to move around, so she just stayed by Madam Forrest’s side to watch the festivities.
The most sacred place in the village was an ancestral hall located right in the center, which was very well-maintained. The God was enshrined within.
According to the village elders, the villagers had originally wanted to build a temple for the God. However, because they didn’t know the God’s proper title, they decided against it to avoid causing offense. Instead, they cast a statue of the God and enshrined it in their ancestral hall, where he has received their incense offerings for generations.
Although they didn’t know the God’s title, their worship and offerings were genuinely sincere.
The clan chief led the villagers to the outside of the ancestral hall. The Priest who usually presided over the ceremonies began muttering a ritual Spell that Celeste Grant couldn’t understand. Though she couldn’t comprehend the words, it sounded ancient and sacred.
The Priest was an elderly man with a few chicken feathers—or what looked like chicken feathers, anyway—stuck in his hair. While this High Priest recited the sacrificial text, everyone in the village, young and old, pressed their palms together with expressions of pure devotion. ’They’re probably praying for the God’s blessing,’ she thought.
After finishing the recitation, the Priest bowed toward the main entrance of the ancestral hall. Only then did he say, "Clan Chief, you may open the hall."
"Yes, Great-Uncle."
The clan chief acknowledged.
The clan chief and his men opened the doors to the ancestral hall.
The doors of the ancestral hall slowly swung open.
At that moment, the prepared offerings were carried into the hall. After the Priest and the clan chief paid their respects, the villagers waiting at the entrance lined up to enter. After worshiping the God, they would exit in an orderly fashion from the other side.
「Next.」
Outside, gongs and drums sounded while the young women performed a ritual dance. In short, it was truly a lively affair. Celeste Grant acknowledged that this was their custom, and she respected it.
As the saying goes, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.
Celeste Grant followed Madam Forrest into the ancestral hall. The High Priest was standing off to one side. The clan chief was helping to distribute incense sticks to the worshiping villagers, but Celeste Grant’s gaze fell upon the statue in the very center.
When she saw the so-called God, she froze. She raised an eyebrow slightly, then tilted her head to examine it more closely. It was no wonder she had frozen at first glance; now, looking at it carefully, she felt the statue was becoming more and more familiar.
’This... looks so familiar?’
she couldn’t help but murmur to herself.
Perhaps seeing her standing there in a daze, Madam Forrest lightly touched her arm. "Celeste, you should offer some incense to the God, too. He will protect you and your child."
’This... Is it really okay for me to offer incense to him?’
"Oh, alright."
Celeste Grant agreed out loud, but her eyes once again fell upon the statue in the center of the hall.
The figure, the silhouette, and the hair falling over the shoulders... Although it was only a sculpted statue, could someone please tell her why the statue this village had created looked so much like her Old Fiend Sinclair?
She stared at the statue.
She couldn’t help but cry out in her heart.
’Archfiend, is that really you?’
She fell into a thoughtful silence.
’What if the legendary God of this village... really is Javier Sinclair?’
