Chapter 403 - 401: This Is How Love Should Be

’It was a little embarrassing, but he truly believed this was what love should be. You only had one person. To say you loved someone while still fooling around with another was an insult to the very word "love." So, in this life—no, for all of eternity—only Celeste would be enough for him.’

’As for his son, his life was his own to live. All that mattered was that his son was happy with his choices.’ Thinking this, he said, "You’re a grown man now. How you live your life is up to you. We won’t interfere too much."

Celeste Grant nodded with a small smile. "Your father and I feel the same way. You’re a grown man now, son. We will respect all of your decisions. As long as you believe you’re doing the right thing and won’t have any regrets, we’ll support you."

Aaron Sinclair smiled and nodded. "I know, Mother."

"Hehe..." Celeste Grant giggled, glancing at her son. "But really, son, it makes me so happy to hear you think that way. You know you need to be a good man—not bad, not bad at all. Since you’re so clear-headed, let me give you a piece of advice. Before you find the Taoist Companion you want to spend your life with, don’t go around deceiving young women. That’s not right. And you definitely can’t provoke a bunch of women for no reason. That’s the behavior of a scumbag. If you’re not interested, you can’t give them false hope. You must reject them clearly. Of course, if you *do* find someone you like, you have to strike while the iron is hot! Otherwise, some other guy might just scoop her up, pot and all."

Aaron Sinclair nodded slightly. "Don’t worry, Father, Mother. I know what to do." He was a grown man now; he knew what he was doing and had his own principles.

After a few serious exchanges, Celeste Grant dropped her solemn act. She deliberately drew out her words, "My son is so handsome... when you’re traveling, have there really been no pretty female cultivators who’ve taken a liking to you? None sending you love letters, or trying to add you as a friend? And what about you? Son, haven’t you met any young ladies who’ve caught your eye?"

Celeste Grant was just being nosy. It was mainly because her son was so incredibly handsome; it would be perfectly normal for him to attract a few romantic admirers. As his mother, she was just a *little* bit curious.

Hearing his own mother’s gossiping, Aaron Sinclair quickly waved his hands. "Oh, Mother, please stop! This is really embarrassing."

He chuckled and said, "Mother, your son is devoted to his cultivation, free from worldly distractions. Whenever I’ve traveled these past few years, I’ve mostly kept to myself. Why would any girl like me? Of course," he added playfully, "there are plenty of female cultivators out there who covet my handsome face. We boys have to protect ourselves when we’re out and about, you know. So, just to be safe, I generally avoid approaching them."

Celeste Grant raised an eyebrow. "And what if you do? For example, what if you’re out somewhere and you see a beautiful female cultivator being harassed by an Evil Cultivator? You’d have to help out, play the hero saving the damsel in distress, wouldn’t you?" After all, this was her son; she knew his nature. He would absolutely step in if he saw something like that. ’And with that face,’ she thought, ’he must be incredibly popular with female cultivators!’

As soon as she asked, she saw a sly smile creep onto her son’s lips.

"Oh, that’s easy!" he said. "If I run into a situation where I absolutely have to play the hero, I’ll either have one of my nearby Demon Cultivators save them so I don’t have to show my face, or, if I have to do it myself, I’ll definitely put on a disguise. I change my appearance to be incredibly ugly. After I save those female cultivators, they either thank me with Spirit Stones or, failing that, with Magic Treasures or Elixir Pills. I don’t really care about that stuff, but a clean transaction where neither of us owes the other anything is the best outcome."

He had, in fact, run into this kind of situation quite a few times.

He laughed at the thought.

"Mother, let me tell you about that whole ’hero saving a damsel’ thing. Ahem. The line I hear most often is this: ’Thank you for saving my life, fellow Taoist. I can never repay your immense kindness. I will be reborn as a beast of burden to serve you in my next life.’ See? They said ’next life.’ For a Cultivator, who knows when the ’next life’ will even be? It’s just an empty promise. It really is a world that revolves around looks."

"Hahaha! I can’t help but laugh every time I hear it." As he spoke, he slapped his thigh and laughed heartily. "So you see, I’m quite farsighted. By changing into an ugly disguise to play the hero, I save myself a ton of trouble, and no one comes looking for me. Otherwise, if I were to save a damsel in distress with this face, she’d most likely offer herself in marriage. Then I’d hear, ’Thank you for saving my life, fellow Taoist. I have no way to repay your great kindness other than to offer you my hand in marriage.’ Yuck! That’s not repaying a debt; that’s taking revenge! Think about it! If I wasn’t interested, but she insisted on marrying me, how revolting would that be? So, to be on the safe side, I always use a different identity when I’m out. I go by the name Jane Thorne now. Just your average, unremarkable, pockmarked Cultivator."

Heh.

Celeste Grant was utterly dumbfounded.

She’d never imagined her son was capable of such a wild scheme. Hearing him describe it, she couldn’t help but let out an impressed "Tsk, tsk." "Son, you’re really one of a kind." It was hilarious, but it was certainly a foolproof way to avoid romantic entanglements.

Aaron raised a hand and smiled faintly. "Let’s be low-key about it. This is just standard procedure. But speaking of which, finding a Taoist Companion is still a long way off for me. Have you forgotten? I already have a fiancée. For now, I’ll just wait for her."

He said it jokingly and was the first to start laughing.

Hearing this, Celeste Grant couldn’t help but laugh. Although it had been a half-joke at the time, if Nerida really did have a daughter, Celeste would be delighted to have her join the family.

Nerida had fair skin, a gorgeous face, and long legs. Standing at five-foot-seven, her beauty was bold and striking. If she had a daughter, she would surely inherit that beauty, and her son would definitely be getting the better end of the bargain. ’But the chances of that happening feel pretty slim,’ she thought.

At that thought, she glanced at her son. "You’re still counting on your Aunt Nerida to produce a wife for you? You must still be dreaming."

The corners of Aaron Sinclair’s lips quirked up. "Well, I’m waiting, aren’t I? That’s why I’m in no hurry to find a Taoist Companion." For now, he only wanted to grow stronger. A wife wasn’t part of his plans; he likely wouldn’t even consider it for the next several hundred years.

At that moment, Aaron Sinclair could never have guessed that one day, far in the future, a fiancée would literally fall out of the sky for him. But that, of course, is a story for another time.

For now, his heart was set only on cultivation, and on ascending to the Upper Realm with his mother and father.
