Chapter 122: Heading to the upper realm
The capital received the complete report from the surviving scout just before the sun left the sky.
The King ordered an immediate closed session of the highest council. Only those with direct authority over the city’s defense were permitted inside the chamber. Elder Voss stood at the large map table with the residual energy crystal glowing faintly in his palm. Sir Kael’s second-in-command delivered the details of the scouting party’s losses without any attempt to soften them.
Three dead. Two crippled beyond immediate return to duty. One survivor who could barely form complete sentences. The dens empty. The path of destruction continuing west without a single interruption.
Elder Voss placed the crystal on the table and activated the full sequence of recorded readings.
"This signature matches nothing in our classifications," he said. "It is not Mythic-rank. It is not any recorded remnant from the Calamity era. The energy is too clean and too efficient. Whatever left this path conserved its power while it worked. It refined itself with every kill. The later dens show even less residual disturbance than the first field outside our walls."
The Royal Guard commander leaned both hands on the edge of the table.
"Then what exactly are we dealing with?"
Voss did not answer at once. He looked toward the western edge of the map where the corrupted lands stretched into territory that had never been properly charted.
"Something that treats the entire Night Crawler population as an obstacle rather than a threat. Something that does not require the numbers or the formations we have always relied upon. Something that walks alone and still produces results that entire armies could not match even if they spent weeks in the field."
The King remained silent for a long time.
When he finally spoke his voice was quiet and carried absolute finality.
"Double every barrier layer on the eastern and western walls. Recall every A-rank hunter currently within four days of travel. Seal the outer districts after sunset. No civilian movement beyond the inner rings without written order from this table. Activate the deep archives and begin a complete review of every Calamity-era record that still survives."
He looked at each face in the chamber in turn.
"If this thing turns toward the capital we will not be caught sleeping a second time."
The orders moved through the city within the hour.
Barrier formations that had not been fully powered in living memory now glowed with sustained light that painted the walls in pale blue. Soldiers filled every section of the ramparts in rotating shifts that left no stretch unwatched. Formation masters worked without rest to reinforce every weak point the arrays could identify.
In the eastern districts the fear had already taken solid root. People gathered in small tight groups near the barrier light and spoke in voices that barely rose above whispers about the empty plains and the missing Night Crawler cries that had been part of the night for as long as anyone could remember. Soldiers on the walls answered questions with silence or short official statements that satisfied no one. Children were kept indoors after dark. Merchants closed their stalls while the sun was still above the horizon. The usual night traffic of the capital thinned until the streets felt abandoned even before the official curfew began.
Captain Roland remained at his post on the eastern wall through the entire night that followed. He watched the corpse field under the moon and waited for the first sign of movement that never arrived. The absence of the usual distant screeches felt louder than any assault he had faced in thirty years of service.
He rested both hands on the cold stone of the wall and thought about the path of destruction that continued west without interruption. He thought about the clean cuts and the crushed cores and the complete lack of any human remains among tens of thousands of dead crawlers.
Something had walked past the capital while the city slept.
Something that did not need an army to achieve what armies could not.
Something that left only silence behind it.
Roland stared into the dark and did not look away.
Far beyond the reach of the barrier light that same silence continued to spread without mercy or pause.
Amon entered the second dens complex as full night claimed the corrupted lands.
The tunnels here were older and far more complex than the first. They branched in deliberate patterns that spoke of decades of continuous expansion. Breeding chambers opened off the main passages at regular intervals. Storage pits held the accumulated remains of lesser creatures that had been dragged down from the surface across years of unbroken hunting. The air was thick with the scent of old blood and the low continuous vibration of many bodies moving in coordinated response to his presence.
The network had already begun to gather its strength.
Amon walked into the first major junction chamber and met the opening wave without any change in expression or pace.
Hundreds of mid-tier crawlers poured from every side passage at the same moment. They moved with a coordination that approached true strategy. Pack leaders directed the flow into overlapping attack patterns while high-tier elites held elevated positions along the walls and waited for the exact moment his attention might divide.
Amon did not allow that moment to exist.
Azrael became a continuous line of black motion that never fully stopped. Every swing ended multiple lives. Every step carried him through the densest section of the formation before the crawlers could close the gaps they themselves had created. Black blood filled the air in fine sprays that never seemed to land on him. Cores ruptured in rapid sequence. Bodies collapsed into heaps that the next wave was forced to climb over if they wished to reach him at all.
He did not slow for any of it.
The refinement process continued with every core that broke. His body adapted in real time to the demands placed upon it. Joints that had carried minor strain at the beginning of the night now moved with perfect efficiency. Muscle and bone reinforced themselves under the constant pressure. The connection between thought and action tightened until the blade arrived at the exact point of greatest vulnerability before the crawler finished the decision to strike.
The high-tier elites dropped from the ceiling in a coordinated ambush designed to overwhelm him from above and below at once.
Amon killed the first three before their feet touched the stone. The remaining two managed to force him into a brief exchange of blows that cracked the tunnel walls in several places. Azrael answered each strike with a cut that removed the attacking limb and continued without pause into the core beneath. The elites died still trying to complete movements that no longer held any meaning.
Silence returned to the junction for less than a single breath.
Then the deeper network responded with everything it still possessed.
The connected entities began sacrificing entire side colonies in waves meant to exhaust him through pure volume and attrition. They failed. Amon moved through each successive wave with the same measured pace he had maintained since leaving the capital. He did not waste a single motion. He did not chase the few crawlers that broke ranks and fled into side passages. He simply removed everything that stood between him and the controlling cores deeper in the complex.
